Palo Alto Young Tree Care Survey

Help care for community trees! Each year, Canopy volunteers and partners comb through Palo Alto neighborhoods to survey the health of hundreds of young street trees, and provide tree care info to local residents and tree stewards. This is a fun and flexible volunteer opportunity, great to do with a friend or partner.

Stevens Creek Trail Tree Planting

Calling all tree planting volunteers! Canopy is teaming up with City of Mountain View, Mountain View Trees, and Friends of Stevens Creek Trail (FOSCT) to plant over 80 trees along a stretch of Stevens Creek Trail in Mountain View. Come join the fun!

Help Canopy reach our campaign goal!

Growing the Canopy campaign brings tree planting, tree care, and hands-on nature education to new schools and neighborhoods.
In 2014, Canopy completed our first
Healthy Trees, Healthy Kids!
initiative, planting 1,000 shade and fruit trees in East Palo Alto schools and public spaces where trees are scarce.
Subsequently,
school districts in Mountain View and Redwood City invited Canopy and partners to bring our unique combination of tree planting, tree care, and youth engagement to their communities, even as our partnership with East Palo Alto continues to expand.
To make this growth possible, we launched
Growing the Canopy, a campaign to raise $600,000 and fund 5 years of bringing the life-giving benefits of trees to new schools and neighborhoods.
We are now in the public phase of the campaign. Thanks to generous quiet phase donors, we are nearing our goal and hope to complete the campaign this spring.

Friday Night at the Art Center
Opening celebration for
Michael Light: Planetary Landscape
Friday, June 16, 7- 10pm at 1313 Newell Road, Palo Alto
Join the Palo Alto Art Center to celebrate two new exhibitions:
Michael Light: Planetary Landscape and
Kija Lucas: Collections From Sundown with a photo booth, hands-on art activities, a cash bar, and food cart.
Canopy is especially excited about a project from Michael Light capturing one of Palo Alto's iconic oak trees--the tree in front of Rinconada Library, next door to the Art Center--from a whole new perspective.
Michael describes his process:
"This 200 year old being, 75 feet tall and 120 feet wide, allowed every square inch of itself to be photographed by a remotely-operated drone. 850 images were then fed into complex data visualization software to create a gravity and light-free three-dimensional cloud comprised of 80 million separate points, through which I could then "fly" in the studio without up or down. From an infinite number of possible two-dimensional "cross-sections," I then chose these two [for the exhibit]."

Dave Muffly is Apple Park's "Tree Whisperer"
In a recent
feature on Wired, Steven Levy takes an in-depth look at the new Apple Park, as construction on the Cupertino "mothership" enters its final months.
As part of his research, Levy caught up with Dave Muffly, Apple's senior arborist, and architect of the vast and varied urban forest already thriving on the new campus. Levy
highlights Muffly and his role in a related piece on Backchannel.
Muffly is a long-time friend of Canopy, and we're thrilled to see his passion for trees play out in the Apple Park vision. As Program Director for Canopy in the early years, and later as a Canopy Board Member, Dave was instrumental in Canopy's first large-scale planting designs. He was especially instrumental in the East Palo Alto Soundwall plantings that were part of the
East Palo Alto Tree initiative. D
