Letter from the President
Stephen Wares CGMA
VP Business Development,

Dear Friends of the BABC,

Firstly, I'd like to wish you all a very happy and healthy 2020! I hope that whatever you did for the festive break you got to spend it with family and friends. A new year gives us not only a chance to reflect on the past but an occasion for new goals and opportunities. I hope you all are looking forward to what the new decade has in store for you.

With the holidays coming to a close, the BABC office is busy finalizing the follow ups for our guests, winners and sponsors at the BABC 56th Annual Christmas Lunch. As in previous years, the Christmas Lunch was once again a huge success and for those that attended we hope you agree! I'd like to take this time to thank all those that played a role in making this event such a triumph, and in particular the amazing team of volunteers, many from Salesforce, and of course the Christmas Elves from the BABC Office (Jo Healey, Corey Hastings, Abbie Lowery and Sofia Pavlova).

As well as this being a great day out for us all, we also raised over $10,600 for our nominated charity,  Play Rugby USA , and your support also ensures the ongoing success and growth of your BABC.

As we reflect on another successful year, our immediate focus shifts to the events calendar, which the BABC office is actively planning this month. February see's our calendar kick off with two flagship events; the 30th Annual BABC Forecast Luncheon | 2020 Visions for Technology on February 5, 2020 and perhaps my unbiased favorite  event of the year, the 9th Annual Funding, Exits & IPOs event in the South Bay on February 25th, 2020. Make sure to save the date for both of these must not miss events.

Preceding both of these events is our ever popular monthly young professionals Happy Hour at Werqwise's Speakeasy which you can sign up for now

The BABC is also going through a bit of a revamp so please keep an eye out for some exciting changes including the launch of our new website in the coming weeks.

As ever we thank our renewing members and look forward to seeing our ever growing network flourish this year. Please don't hesitate to reach out to the BABC office with any inquiries .

One again I wish you all a very Happy and Healthy 2020!

Best,

Stephen Wares

Dear BABC Community,

I hope everyone enjoyed a break with family and loved ones over the holidays. I'm on extended leave, but there are a few things big things coming our way in 2020 including COP26 taking place in Glasgow and of course Brexit. Along the way, we at the Consulate will continue to work to showcase the best of Britain in academics and research, tech and innovation, and maintaining our special relationship with our friends in the US.

For the sixth year in a row, the Alameda Pipe-athon hit the bars of The Island City on New Year's Eve (Hogmanay in Scotland, Hogmabay in the Bay Area!), with BABC Director, Scottish ex-pat and Alameda resident Andy MacKay playing Auld Lang Syne on the bagpipes in 20 bars and restaurants on the island, raising funds for the American Cancer Society and 'hitting cancer for six' (a quaint British cricket term!).

Accompanied by Team Pipe-athon, including Jake and Elwood Blues and Sister Mary Stigmata, to 'encourage' Alamedans to donate to ACS, Andy also played for officers at the Alameda Police Department on the way round, as an appreciation of their service.

"The Alameda Pipe-athon has become a great way to spread some traditional Scottish New Year Cheer, and to raise some much needed funds to combat cancer" MacKay says. "This year in particular I'm playing for my brother in law, Sylvester, who is bravely battling prostate cancer in the UK."

Over 6 years, the Pipe-athon has raised almost $25,000 dollars for American Cancer Society. So far this year's event has raised nearly $4,500 of the $6,000 target, which they are still hoping to achieve. "We'd like to thank all the people of Alameda who came out to support us and ACS. It's always great fun and a unique way to spend New Year's Eve!"

You can still help the Pipe-athon Team achieve their target with online donations at www.hogmabay.org
