SEASON'S GREETINGS!
Happy Holidays Everyone! As we are coming to a close on 2019, here are some of the exciting things that NYSCADV has been up to these past few months.

The NYSCADV Directors Summit took place in November 2019 at the Red Lion Hotel. It was an exciting two days as our participants delved into emerging national and local housing innovations, New York's method for funding DV programs, and how strong DV coalitions translate into strong DV programs . Special thanks to Judy Chen, MPA, the new Executive Director at the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Monica McLaughlin, Director of Public Policy at National Network to End Domestic Violence and Christie Bevis, Director of Safe Housing Practices and Initiatives at NRCDV for their presentations on these topics.

NYSCADV also brought its 5th Annual Domestic Violence Prevention Summit to the Downstate Area, in partnership with the New York City Anti-Violence Project in October. The Prevention Summit explored effective approaches to preventing intimate partner violence before it begins, across the spectrum of gender identity and sexual orientation. Special thanks to Monroe College for their generous venue sponsorship for this event. The Summit featured a Keynote by Zoe Flowers , a presentation, an exhibit by Queery , and a presentation from our hosting partners, the New York City Anti Violence Project.

NYSCADV is excited to see what 2020 will bring and looks forward to another year working hard to end domestic violence once and for all!

HAVE A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON AND SEE YOU IN THE NEW YEAR!
POLICY CORNER
FVPSA Reauthorization Bill Introduced in Congress

Representative Lucy McBath (D-GA), joined by Representatives Tom Cole (R-OK), Gwen Moore (D-WI), and John Katko (R-NY) introduced H.R. 5041, a bill to reauthorize and expand the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA). This important legislation, companion to bipartisan S. 2259 in the U.S. Senate, would increase survivors’ access to emergency shelter, crisis counseling, legal assistance, and other life-saving services. Dueling VAWA Reauthorization Bills Introduced in US Senate

NNEDV is reviewing and analyzing two bills introduced in the US Senate to reauthorize VAWA. The first, S2843 and introduced by Senator Feinstein of CA, is a companion to HR 1585, a bipartisan bill that was approved in the House in April. The second reauthorization bill, S2920, was introduced by Senator Ernst of Iowa in late November. We will keep you apprised.

New York State 2020 Legislative Session

The NYSCADV policy team is hard at work, analyzing bills to identify priorities for the 2020 legislative session. We are optimistic that next year’s legislative session will be as impactful as 2019, when more than 50 DV and DV-related pieces of legislation were approved by the Assembly and Senate and signed into law. This included the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act, the Right to Call 911 bill, and a new law permitting DV survivors to file police reports in any jurisdiction in the state, not just where a DV incident occurred. Click here to review a summary of all the DV legislation that was approved this year. We also expect to focus quite a bit of time on the New York State Budget. For your calendars and planning, please note the NYSCADV Budget Advocacy Day is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 4, and the Legislative Day of Action is Tuesday, May 12. Be on the look-out for registration information!
