Thanksgiving 2019 Newsletter

  Greetings!

Coming originally from Canada, my wife and I thought Thanksgiving a strange custom when we moved to the United States. Over the years it's become one of our favorite holidays and a perfect time to settle in for the coming Winter, look back on the year that will soon end and where we hope the next one to be.

It’s been another incredibly exciting and busy year at HNNH. Our Residency program is flourishing, expanding our team and what we can offer to our community. Recognition of what we do is expanding as we receive, further awards, more requests for lectures, and as we integrate more with conventional providers for better care.

We continue to be incredibly grateful for what we get to do every day, as well as the opportunity to share in each other's lives as we all continue on this journey of health and healing.

Residency - Post Graduate Medical Training at HNNH

HNNH is continuing our successful Residency program as an affiliate of National University of Naturopathic Medicine as a postgraduate residency training site.

We are fortunate to have two wonderful doctors who have each joined us for a 2-year residency to learn our unique method of practice.
Dr. Smith is our senior resident and is currently seeing both Comprehensive and Oncology patients.
Dr. Mosher is our first year resident, a new Naturopathic Doctor graduate, after a career in nursing.

Hormone Safety

One area of medicine that has become very popular, both in conventional and alternative circles, is the use of hormones. Despite the temptation to think of hormones as natural, there is ample reason to be concerned about their use. Two recent studies demonstrate good reason for caution.

Testosterone replacement therapy use tripled from 2001 to 2013, and in 2016 over 1 million men the the US were using it. The FDA put out a warning about increased risks of heart attacks and strokes in 2014. This latest study looked at blood clot incidence and found more than twice the risk in men taking testosterone.

For women estrogen replacement therapy is very common for menopausal symptoms. Topical estrogen is frequently recommended, especially by alternative practitioners, as lower risk with the assumption that it wouldn't increase blood levels and therefore all the risks associated with HRT, including heart disease, dementia and cancer. New research shows this not to be the case - women using topical estrogen had increased blood levels, and the new European guidelines restrict their use to no more than 4 weeks.

At HNNH we've always been incredibly cautious about the use of any external hormones, even those considered 'natural', and the latest research only strengthens our thinking. If someone is suffering from symptoms that may be related to low hormonal function, finding the root cause is always the safer, and more effective path. Anyone taking hormone replacement therapy should be considering if the benefits are worth the risks that we are only beginning to understand.

Peace Possible
HNNH is proud to be recognized as a key supporter of Peace Possible . We donated hundreds of containers of electrolytes to be distributed in areas of severe nutritional deficiencies.

A not for profit founded by my colleague and friend, Dr Decker Weiss, the organization works in conflict zones throughout the world to bring medical care to those in need, and conducts research on the neurochemistry and natural treatment of severe trauma.

Plastic Teabags

Anyone who's been in my office knows my preference is to make my tea in a completely stainless steel french press , using my favorite Darjeeling Oolong tea in bulk. In the rest of the clinic you'll always find a large assortment of various organic, fair trade certified teas. We're always happy when patients stop by to pick up an order and decide to sit and relax with a cup of tea.

One thing you will never find at HNNH is tea in the popular pyramid shaped tea bags. Although marketed as better to infuse the tea properly, steeping plastic in hot water has never seemed like a good idea to me.

New research shows just how bad it is. Done at McGill University, Paula's alma mater in our hometown of Montreal, the study found billions of pieces of micro and nano plastics in a single cup of tea. Yes billions; around 15 billion in fact. The researchers also found heavy metals that had attached to the micro plastics giving a wonderful double dose of toxicity.

Paper tea bags are not ideal either as they are also processed with chemicals, however they are a much better option. Even better would be to get a stainless steel infuser, or follow my lead and get a french press. Bulk teas are less expensive, and can be re-used making them even more practical.
As always, if you have any direct questions about your care, please call, fax, or  email us
