FIRST Lego League Tournament
This past month brought a much anticipated event to Southeast Alaska: Juneau Robot Jamboree on December 7 with over 20 teams.
This event brings together students between the ages of 9-14 and judges teams on their technical experience, core values, project, robot design and robot performance.
This was one of 12 events in December under JEDC's FIRST Program. JEDC supports 30+ competitions each year throughout Alaska as part of our Talent Development programming focused on developing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills.

Indicator of the Month
Juneau's 60+ Cohort is Now 20 Percent of our Population
While the population of Juneau has grown by 4.2 percent overall in the decade from 2009 to 2018, during this same time Juneau's 60 and over cohort has increased by 54 percent, from 4,201 seniors in 2009 to 6,483 seniors in 2018. In 2009, seniors represented just under 14 percent of Juneau's population. In 2018, seniors reached 20 percent of the population. The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Research and Analysis Section, projects Juneau's 60 and over population to continue to grow, reaching 24 percent of our population by 2025 and remaining around this percent from then on.
A look at the senior population growth by five-year cohorts reveals a more nuanced picture. The number of seniors aged 60 to 64 increased by 33 percent in the past decade, the number of 65 to 69 year-olds increased by 83 percent, and the number seniors 70 to 74 nearly doubled, increasing by an 90 percent.
