A Message from the Dean...
Pentecost and Doctors of the Soul
"All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability..." - Acts 2:4

Nachmanides is a 12 th century Jewish philosopher who determined that a person needs to take care of the soul as well as the body, and just as a sick person turns to a doctor, a person with mental illness must turn to the doctor of the soul, which is the philosopher or the sage. Nachmanides opposed the deterministic approach, arguing that a person has free will and the ability to shape his or her life.
So, what does Nachmanides and doctors of the soul have to do with Pentecost?
Just this: so often in life people feel stuck. They think they are unable to change on their own. We may paint it in theological terms: "God made me this way, so it must be okay." That is a modern version of determinism.
Often rabbis are considered "doctors of the soul." The idea is that as our souls becomes healthy, we need not be stuck and simply creatures of how we were raised.
Compare this with a quote from Nikola Tesla:
To me, the universe is simply a great machine which never came into being and never will end. The human being is no exception to the natural order. Man, like the universe, is a machine. Nothing enters our minds or determines our actions which is not directly or indirectly a response to stimuli beating upon our sense organs from without.
Really? We are just creatures of our environment? Rats in a maze conditioned by our environment, according to B.F. Skinner?
Pentecost and the gift of the Holy Spirit tell us that God can empower us to live our lives with a power greater than ourselves. This power like a "mighty rushing wind" is available to you and me, to help us to live our lives in a richer, fuller, and deeper way-the way that God intends us to live. All we need do is ask for that empowerment.

Adult Christian Formation
The New York Times and the Bible, Sundays, 9:35-10:15am

What does the Bible have to say about  contemporary issues that are in the weekly news? In this summer discussion series led by various lay leaders and St. Matthew's clergy, we'll explore this question together. Each week, we'll look at an article from the New York Times on a current event or topic in the news, as well as pertinent passages from Scripture. A lay leader or St.  Matthew's clergy member will facilitate group discussion on what the Bible tells us about the news event in the article. Please join us as we seek new insight on current news events by looking through the lens of Scripture.

Summer Choir Sponsorship Challenge!

A great and sincere "thank you" from the Choir of St. Matthew's Cathedral for the gracious
response of St. Matthew's parishioners in
sponsoring choral ensembles for June, July, and August. We especially thank the Dean and Mrs. Michell, the Vestry of St. Matthew's Cathedral, the Country Fair and Linda Vaughn, St. Monica's Guild, Steve Crews, the Sale family, Clint and Betty Josey, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Spencer, as well as those who contributed to and attended the Mother's Day Brunch.

The Mother's Day Brunch was a great success and proceeds will be used to sponsor at least one Sunday this summer. Thank you to Lucy Creech for her tremendous culinary contributions to that event.

The last three Sundays in July will be sung and donated by ensembles from the Arts District Chorale. The Arts District Chorale moved its headquarters back to St. Matthew's in January of this year and their singing will allow the Cathedral Choir to have a break and to refresh. We are very fortunate and in a uniquely wonderful  circumstance to house three choral organizations at St. Matthew's: The Cathedral Choir, St. Matthew's Cathedral Arts Choral Artists, and the Arts District Chorale. Thank you very, very much. Keith Franks
