Banner Year by Kerry Brown, Friends President
With the arrival of summer, many things are happening at the Library, and the Friends have been a part of them. In recent months, the board has supported a number of purchases including the Optelec ClearView+ Speech closed circuit magnifier with voice capability, a picture/art display system, and totes and hats (for sale!). We have also given major support to Youth Services for supplies, equipment and programs. These benefits are a direct result of the generous support of our members and our community. In fact, we have had a banner year for membership, the Learning Series, and the Book Sale programs, areas that have enjoyed unprecedented support and growth. We strongly urge you to participate in our major fundraising program by purchasing a $20 Passport to Savings booklet full of merchant discounts and a chance at a giveaway dinner, lunch, or hotel stay. We welcome everyone to attend our Annual Meeting on June 13, featuring our guest speaker, WGBH news journalist Emily Rooney. Once again, we thank you all for your generous support.

New Option: Optelec ClearView+ Speech for people with low vision by Irene Gillies, Library Director
Eldredge Public Library is now happy to provide an upgraded closed circuit magnifier with voice capability. The Optelec ClearView+ Speech can instantly convert any printed text into speech. Now you can enjoy having access to accurate information in a way that is most comfortable and easy for you, especially long text. The Point & Read interface allows you to simply touch the screen for the Speech feature and instantly enjoy listening to articles, letters and books with a natural sounding voice and full page overview. (Headphones are available for privacy when reading aloud.)
You also have the option to enlarge materials to a more comfortable size or change the high contrast viewing modes with one master dial. Your text can be magnified to 1.5 to 75 times the size of the original text. This newest version, with an intuitive 24" HD Touchscreen monitor, lets you select your text and scroll with a touch of the finger. You can read text in high contrast modes, and at the same time view pictures in original color. And, it is capable of reading aloud in over 30 different languages!
The Optelec is set up in the Quiet Study Room on the second floor of the Library. Come give it a try!
We are grateful to Friends of the Library board member Gerry McDowell, who applied for a grant from the Women's Club of Chatham, who responded with a generous gift of $750 toward the purchase of the Optelec ClearView+ Speech, and to the Friends Board who voted to make up the difference in the cost of the machine.

Build a Better World by Tammy DePasquale, Youth Services Librarian
Youth Services is in the zone! ...the construction zone, that is, as we prepare for our upcoming Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), Build a Better World. Sponsored by the Eldredge Public Library, the Friends of the Eldredge Public Library, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the CSLP is a nationwide, grassroots consortium working together to provide public libraries with high-quality summer reading program materials with a unified theme for children, teens, and adults at the lowest cost possible.
This year's theme, Build a Better World, for prereaders through grade 12, uses the universal appeal of creating, repurposing, and building to create positive change. From looking more closely at ourselves and how we interact with our families, friends and communities to exploring the bigger world and beyond, families of all ages will discover new ways of viewing and improving the many "worlds" we encounter.
Youth Services has a variety of events and activities scheduled this summer for children, teens, and families. The July/August calendars will be available at the library and on our website, www.eldredgelibrary.org, beginning Thursday, June 15th. Registrations for July programming will begin on the 15th. (August registrations will open on July 15th.)
We look forward to seeing you at our summer kick-off event on Tuesday, June 27th at 1:30 with EPL favorite Lucky Bob! No registration is required for this one-of-a-kind afternoon celebration.
Registration for the CSLP Build a Better World will immediately follow the performance.

The Friends ask for your support!
by Sherry Hesch and Tom Quill, Membership Committee
Our membership drive will coincide with the start of the 2018 fiscal year. Renewal letters will be in your mailbox in early July. Your continued support allows us to fund those services and projects that are beyond the regular operating budget of the library. We currently have 465 loyal friends and would love to increase that number. If you know a friend or neighbor who enjoys the many services of the library, please encourage them to become a member of the Friends. Please take a minute to respond when your invitation to renew your membership arrives. Or log on to www.eldgredgelibrary.org, select "donate" and then "Friends Membership" to use our secure on-line renewal form. We thank you for your continued support!

Museum Passes Available!
Don't forget that we have discount passes to many popular museums. New this year, we will have the Boston Children's Museum passes for everyday of the week and we now have the Whydah Pirate Museum in Yarmouth! Call the library to reserve your pass.
Thank you to the Friends for providing these wonderful museum passes for our patrons!

The FEPL Learning Series
As of May 11th, Regina McDowell reported that the Learning Series Spring semester has attracted over 600 registrants. This is a 40% increase from last spring. We greatly appreciate the active participation and positive feedback from all our attendees and volunteers.
The Learning Series committee is working hard on planning the fall program, and we are hoping to offer eighteen courses, including such new ones as Opera, the
