I Didn't
Know That!

Since we're on the subject of Fathers, I thought I would share this with you.

Courtesy of the Stray Thoughts Blog, here is a humorous look at some of the differences between Fathers in the 1900's and Fathers today.

~~~~~~
In the 1900's, if a father put a roof over his family's head, he was a success.
Today, it takes a roof, deck, pool, and 4-car garage. And that's just the vacation home.
~~~~~~

In the 1900's, a father waited for the doctor to tell him when the baby arrived.

Today, a father must wear a smock, know how to breathe, and make sure film is on the video camera.

~~~~~~
In the 1900's, fathers could count on children to join the family business.
Today, fathers pray their kids will soon come home from college long enough to teach them how to work the computer and their cell phones.
~~~~~~

In the 1900's, fathers shook their children gently at 4:00 a.m. and whispered, "Wake up, it's time for school."

Today, kids shake their fathers violently at 4 a.m., shouting: "Wake up, it's time for hockey practice."

~~~~~~
In the 1900's, a father came home from work to find his wife and children at the supper table.
Today, a father comes home to a note: "Jimmy's at baseball, Cindy's at gymnastics, I'm at the gym, Pizza in the fridge."
~~~~~~

In the 1900's, a Father's Day gift would be a hand tool.

Today, he could easily get something like an electronic tablet.

~~~~~~
In the 1900's, 'a good day at the market' meant Father brought home feed for the horses.
Today, "a good day at the market" means Dad got in early on an IPO.
Travel Tips
Okay, so there is no rhyme or reason to these tips.
They are just some random trips I found that have to do with travelling.
Enjoy!
~~~~~~

Hotels don't always give a room a deep clean in between guests, so you might be exposed to germs from the room's previous occupants.

It's a good idea to use disinfecting wipes to clean surfaces like light switches, toilet handles, and, especially, the TV remote control.

~~~~~~
Speaking of germs, do you know what the most germ ridden surfaces on an airplane are?
Well, besides the lavatory, you will find the most germs on the tray tables and arm rests.
Carry disinfecting wipes with your so you can wipe them down with once you get settled - and before you eat anything!
Oh, and stay away from those airline pillows and blankets.
They're not always cleaned between uses!
~~~~~~

When eating out in countries with poor standards of sanitation and hygiene, always eat at busy places where the turnover of food will be fast.

Avoid buffets: they're notorious for harbouring the bugs that cause diarrhea.

~~~~~~
Be bold.
Don't just book the holiday you think you should be going on.
You are never too old or too young to visit a new city, go backpacking or venture out alone.
It is never as challenging as you think it will be - disregard all the obstacles and do what you want to do!
~~~~~~

Get the authentic experience.

Make sure you indulge in the local culture and try not to keep to the well-beaten tourist tracks.

A great way to soak up the local atmosphere is to head to a restaurant away from the main drag, and ask the waiter to recommend their most popular dishes.

One of the tastiest meals we ever had was in a local food court in Kuala Lumpur!

~~~~~~
Call for help.
If you've missed a connection, don't stand in line to re-book with a gate agent.
Instead, use your cell phone to call the airline's customer-service number (tuck it in your wallet before leaving).
You may speak to someone faster, giving you a better shot at a seat on the next flight.
~~~~~~

Exercise caution in duty-free shops - not everything in duty-free is a bargain.

If you really want that bottle of perfume, find out what it costs in your local department store first.

And consider the three-ounce rule when stocking up on things like alcohol and olive oil.

If you are transferring to another domestic flight after clearing customs, remember that you'll have to put your liquid duty-free purchases in a checked bag.

Watch Out
For These Scams

"The Squeeze"

Bolivia

How it works:

The cramped and congested passageways of Cochabamba's famed La Cancha - the largest market in Bolivia - make it the perfect staging ground for "the squeeze."

Overwhelmed by the chaos and distracted by the overflowing stalls, you might find yourself suddenly pressed among a group of burly men, unable to move your arms.

By the time the surprise wears off, the thugs have already rummaged through your pockets and disappeared.

What you can do:

Pay extra attention at
cross-streets, which lend themselves to fast approaches and easy escapes.

Always try to be aware of your surroundings, and aware of what is going on around you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monkey Business
Bali
How it works:
Bali has an altogether unexpected kind of crook - the monkeys who are so beloved that they have their own sacred forest and temple, where they're allowed to roam free.
These monkeys can have sticky fingers, going after food if it piques their interest - and, worse, valuables.
Some enterprising locals are usually on hand to coax the monkey to give back its plunder, though they'll ask for a small tip of up to $3.50.
What you can do:
Seek out a staff member for assistance if a monkey snatches something from you.
Better yet: hold on tightly to purses and backpacks, and remove and secure glasses or anything else that can be easily purloined.
The Pipestone Patter
June 2017
Welcome Back Loyal Readers!
Welcome back everyone.
Whew!  It seems like an awfully long time since last you heard from me, doesn't it?
Of course, for me, there is never enough time between writing each newsletter.  The newest one sneaks up on me every time!
However, for you, I can imagine you all start to get a little bit antsy when you haven't seen a newsletter for a while.  Sorry about that!
Well, here it is - wait no more.
Of course, the big item on most of our agendas is   . . .
dah da da da  . . .  Father's Day!
And, I mean literally, right around the corner.
Now I know some of you will have already done your shopping for dear old Dad, but if you are still looking for some great gift ideas, well, just keep reading.
We have clothes and hats and gadgets and stuff!
Why not come on in to one of our stores, I'm pretty certain you'll find something there Dad will love.
If you don't happen to make it into the store in time for Father's Day, I have every confidence you will make your way in at some point in the future.
Just remember everyone   . . .   We're Moving!
Our store in WillowPark Village is moving, but just two doors north, so it's not really that much of a trek for you.
Our official re-opening date is Saturday, July 1st; but, just between you and me, we might just be moved into our new space a week earlier.
So when you come to see us, if we're not in our old spot, just turn right and walk two doors down.  I'm sure you're going to love the new space as much as we do.
More space, more stock, more fun (if that's even possible - the fun, I mean!).
Spotlight On ...
It's June.
So, this month, what else would we spotlight but  . . .
Father's Day!
Now, as I told you last month, Mother's Day is my favourite holiday, but I do love my Wonderful Husband dearly, so I am actually very happy to have a day where I get the chance to let him know how much I appreciate the fact that he's such a great Husband and a great Dad.
Don't get me wrong.  It's not like he doesn't get treated special by me all year long.  Of course he does!  You Ladies out there know what I'm talking about, right?
Cooking for them, cleaning up after them, reading their minds and remembering where they put things.  It's all in a days work for us.
We consider that pampering - they consider it normal!
So on Father's Day, we have to up our game.
This is the day on which we honour our Dads, Step Dads, Foster Dads, Husbands, Grandfathers, Uncles - or really, just any man who makes a difference our life.
And what better way to do that than with some love and attention; and, oh yeah, a wonderful gift ?
EX-Officio FlyQ Vest
We have owned Pipestone Travel Store for almost 20 years now, and take it from me when I tell you that men love this vest!
It's one of our best selling products, especially when a man wants to treat himself.
There is plenty of room for everything, (remember, most men don't carry a purse, so all these pockets are invaluable) and best of all?
When he gets to the security checkpoint, all he has to do is take off the vest and put it in a container.
No muss, no fuss - just walk through the metal detector.  No emptying of pockets, no dropping change, no fumbling or holding up the line.
I'm telling you people, men love this vest!
Dad can stash his passport, glasses, trail bar, and book away in the sundry pockets, and still have room left over for extras.
The vest has a Teflon™ Shield+ finish in case of beverage cart or food truck mishaps.
And, there is an interior RFID lined pocket to protect against digital theft and give him peace of mind on his travels.
There are two security zip chest pockets, two security zip hand pockets that fit a passport, and an interior 4-Pocket Travel System.
If you are shopping for the Dad who has everything, you really need to check this vest out.
Sizes:   Small to 2XL
Colours:   Khaki and Walnut
$159.95
Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell you!
Because we love your Dad almost as much as you do, we have decided to give him a special gift.
From now until June 17th, with every purchase of a FlyQ Vest, we will give you a Koola body-cooling neck wrap -
Absolutely Free!
Yes, you read it correctly.
That's a $20 value for free!
And, because we are such nice people, we will make this offer available on the purchase of the Men's FlyQ Vest and the Ladies FlyQ Vest.
Yes siree-bob!  They make them for the ladies too!
Tales from the Road
Hey Jimmie,  . . .  Happy Father's Day!
If any of you out there reading this like to watch sitcoms on television, then you may have heard of Chuck Lorre.
He's a very prolific writer of television comedies, and if you don't recognize his name, I'm certain you would recognize the names of some of the shows he's written.
How about Dharma & Greg?  Or Mike & Molly?  Then there's Grace Under Fire - Two and a Half Men - Mom - and, of course, The Big Bang Theory.
Now, you might wonder why I'm talking about Chuck Lorre in our newsletter.
Bear with me a moment.
If you do recognize some of his shows, you may be aware that at the end of each program, he posts something he calls a "vanity card".
His vanity cards contain messages that tend to be random thoughts about - whatever.
It could be the election of Donald Trump - it could be the mix up with the "Best Picture Award" at the Oscars - it could be a memory from his childhood.
The point is, he has written a vanity card for each and every episode of each and every one of his shows, beginning with the very first episode of "Dharma and Greg" in 1997  (I guess he wasn't doing these cards yet when "Cybill" aired in 1995, or when "Grace Under Fire" aired in 1993.)
That's 20 years of vanity cards!
