Great Places to Cycle: Bruce County - Southwest

The cycling in southwest Bruce County is well known by some, but still somewhat of a hidden gem for many. Defined by the coastlines of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, and agricultural lands as one travels inland, cyclists of all kinds can find seemingly endless opportunities to explore this stunning part of the province by bike. 

The region features fantastic trail networks, including the Bruce County Rail Trail and Saugeen Rail Trail, the Kincardine Trails plus the trails within MacGregor Provincial Park. Families will love exploring the 6km North Shore Trail, a paved path running alongside Lake Huron and connecting the towns of Port Elgin and Southampton.

The road riding in Bruce County features a bit of everything with quieter, lake-side county roads and rural riding with rolling hills away from the coastline. With 13 suggested road routes, the Bruce County Cycling Routes map is essential when planning a single day or multi-day road cycling holiday in Bruce County.

With over 80km of well-developed mountain bike trails, Bruce County makes a perfect destination for an extended weekend of ripping up the trails. Visit the   Mountain Bike Adventure Park in Wiarton, w ell known for technical riding with 20km of trails that include plenty of rollers and berms along single and double track.

Just east of downtown Toronto lies Northumberland County, with communities and landscapes welcoming cyclists of all kinds. Follow the shores of Lake Ontario or explore the hilly Oak Ridges Moraine and protected Greenbelt, north to Rice Lake and the historic Trent-Severn Waterway.

The new 2017 Northumberland County Cycling Adventures map features 10 routes and trail systems (including 5 signed road routes), the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail , the Greenbelt Route , the Great Trail and a number of fantastic mountain biking locations.  To receive a free cycling map by mail, click here.

Don't want to drive?  Consider taking your bike on VIA Rail to Cobourg and make a weekend of cycling and spending time exploring the cultural and culinary delights of Northumberland County.

London Bicycle Expo

There is an array of cycling events and outings planned to celebrate cycling in London, Ontario over 5 days, stretching from June 21 to 25. 

Catch a movie, bike to breakfast or go on one of the themed rides: a historical bike tour; a food garden tour; and a Canada 150 cycle ride. Many of the rides have distances geared to families and follow the Thames River Trail, others are longer and more suited to experience riders. 

The festivities will be capped off on the 25th at Boler Mountain, with an expo and opportunity to ride the trail system at the local ski hill. To find out more link HERE

York Region Discovery Rides & Bike to GO

If you're looking for family-friendly rides this summer, join one of the free York Region Discovery Ridesa series of casual cycling tours led by a York Region staff and citizen member volunteers from some of the local cycling clubs. 

With 6 Discover Rides remaining in 2017 and tour names like  Main Streets Foodie Ride Holland River Historical Tour,  there are lots of remaining opportunities to get out and ride and we're certain both parents and kids will love these routes! Pre-registration for these rides is required.
