Reminder of spring registration deadline : Friday, February 16 is the last day to add spring classes for financial aid purposes. For full-time financial aid you must have 12 or more credits. If you have left registration for closed classes with a prof or department head, make contact with them to add the classes for you by that date. Contact Financial Aid with questions.

Prepare for Hope over Hate week by reading the story of Matthew Boger, Distinguished Lecturer coming on March 6.  Kristen Wuerl '18 will lead a discussion on  Freaks and Revelations  a powerful novel "told in alternating perspectives of two teenager's lives before and after the violent crime that changed both of their futures." Challenging the boundaries of classical music, saxophonist Jonathan Hulting-Cohen and Luther College Assistant Professor of Music Nicholas Shaneyfelt, piano, will present a selection from "Timbre|ine," a project by Hulting-Cohen.  Featuring three world premieres, the recital begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 18, in Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.

SAC Impact Presents Odell Bizzell - Tuesday, February 20. Through dynamic inspirational stories, Odell teaches people how to unify in a world that wants them divided. Opening session: "Getting to know Odell Bizzell" in Olin 102 at 9:45 a.m./ Pizza reception in the CFL Qualley Lounge at 5:15 p.m. / Keeping the Dream Alive - 4 Ways to Model Dr. King's Dream to Achieve Your Own presentation in the CFL Recital Hall at 6:30 p.m. Free with CAF and $5 without.

David Pilgrim, one of the country's leading experts on issues relating to multiculturalism, diversity and race relations, will present "Watermelons, Nooses, and Straight Razors: Stories from the Jim Crow Museum," at 4 p.m. Sunday, February 18, in Luther College's Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall.

Chicago artist James Jankowiak brings his dynamic abstract paintings to Luther in "Prismatic Vernacular," an exhibition of works that focus on the role of color and familiar form as a means of communication in our day-to-day environment. The exhibit is on display February 15-March 20 in the Center for the Arts, Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery, with an opening reception at 4 p.m. Friday, February 16, in the same location.

With 20 fingers and one passion, the Unison Piano Duo comprised of Luther College piano faculty members Du Huang and Xiao Hu will present a concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 17, in Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.

The premiere performance of the Luther College Faculty Brass Trio is 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 16, in the Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Luther music faculty John Cord, Rebecca Boehm Shaffer and Michael Smith formed the trio in the fall of 2017. Their debut performance includes compositions by Josquin de Prez, Robert Muczynski, Vaclav Nelhybel, Anthony Plog and Francis Poulenc.
 
Devotions for Lent - Free copies of the Lenten devotional You Are the Way: Devotions for Lent 2018, will be available (while supplies last) during Chapel, Sunday morning worship, or in the College Ministries office.

Earl Mollerud (Luther alum), President of the Brave New Workshop Entertainment Company in Minneapolis, MN, tells how he founded, grew and sold a successful retail business. His experience raising $3.65 million in private equity, serving as CEO, developing management systems and selling the company to his largest investor will inspire and motivate young entrepreneurs. Monday, February 19, 6:30pm, F.W. Olin Building, Room 102.

Raul is my brother, a Fat Tuesday Fest  will be held on Tuesday, February 13 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Decorah United Methodist Church. Donations accepted at the door, no advance tickets. Lab Orchestra, sponsored by FMEA, begins this Saturday, February 17, from 1-1:30 p.m. in the Jenson Noble Orchestra Room! Come learn a string instrument of your choice, taught by a Lab Orchestra mentor. No experience is necessary and this event is open to students of all majors. Instruments are provided. Questions? Decorah Walmart shopping shuttle will run from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 18. This is open to all students and there is no charge, but reservations are requested, please register here. ELCA Young Adult in Global Mission (YAGM) Program
 is a one-year international service learning opportunity for young adults, age 21-29. First Lutheran Church, Decorah, is committed to support recipients for the 2018-2019 mission year. If you are submitting an application for the YAGM Program (Feb 15 deadline), please inform the First Lutheran Church at the time of your application. Luther College faculty and staff are eligible for a 50 percent reimbursement (up to $100) on Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares. Check out participating farms and sign up today to participate in the Luther CSA Reimbursement Program! The reimbursement will be handled through Payroll this year.

Spring Concert

SAC Concerts is excited to announce that JUDAH & THE LION will be performing in the Regents Center on Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m.! Tickets will be available soon for $40 or free with CAF. Get excited, Luther!


Center Stage Series - Art of Time Ensemble: Songbook with Steven Page. Steven Page, formerly of the Barenaked Ladies, joins the highly inventive Art of Time Ensemble in an evening of seminal songs by Randy Newman, Radiohead, Elvis Costello, Barenaked Ladies, Leonard Cohen, and others. Songbook is chamber music for the modern era.The performance is Saturday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m in the Center for Faith and Life. Tickets are available from the Luther College Ticket Office or online.
 
Spring Activities Fair!
 Plan to attend the Spring Activities Fair, Tuesday, February 13 from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. in Williams Lounge, Dahl Centennial Union. Students interested in learning more about student organization involvement and leadership opportunities can browse the various organizations, gather information, and signup!

From Aunt Jemima advertisements to the board game Ghettopoly, American popular culture is replete with racist images. "Hateful Things," a 39-piece traveling exhibition of items of material culture from late 19th century to the present that embody the effects of the Jim Crow legacy, is on display from February 12 to March 2 in the Center for Faith and Life. 
 
Seniors: Individual study carrels are again available for reservation on a first-come, first served basis in Preus Library. The carrels are located along the perimeter of the third floor and are assigned for personal use on a per-semester basis. Contact Eddy Atwell to request a senior carrel reservation for the spring. There are a limited number dedicated for this use. 

Trailblazing jazz trio John Raymond and Real Feels will bring their brand of dynamic improvisation to Luther College Thursday, February 15, for a guest recital. The performance is at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Faith and Life, Recital Hall

Want to learn more about how to recognize and prevent relationship abuse?   Join us for the Escalation Workshop on Thursday, February 15, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Olin 102. This powerful workshop is interactive and includes a film and discussion. Sponsored by Counseling Service, Wellness, NASA, Student Life, and Helping Services for Children and Families. 
 
SEMESTER ABROAD OPPORTUNITY! Come learn about two semester-long programs offered through the Associated Colleges of the Midwest - Fall 2018's "Brazil: Culture, Community, and Language" with Prof. Molly McNicoll and Spring 2019's "London and Florence: Arts in Context" with Prof. Amy Weldon - at an informal information session with the profs and with representatives from ACM. The session will be held Wednesday, February 14 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in Main 214. Hope to see you there!

LAB CHOIR, sponsored by FMEA begins on Sunday, February 18, at 3:00 p.m. Join your fellow music-lovers for an introduction to what Lab Choir will be this semester, some fun icebreaker activities, and some beautiful music!  Lab Choir will provide a place for conductors and singers to practice their skills, and offer exposure to excellent, teachable music, no experience required. Chicago artist James Jankowiak will be the first artist featured in Luther College's new Artist Talk series Thursday, February 15. In addition, Jankowiak, whose exhibit "Prismatic Vernacular" opens Friday, February 16, will be present at a gallery opening featuring the work of local youth, also occurring February 16.
 
Attention Students Registered for Private Music Lessons - If you decide to drop lessons the following schedule will be used to compute the charge for spring 2018: Dropping lessons by February 11 - No charge; by February 18 - $45 charge; by February 25 - $90 charge; by March 6 - $135 charge; after March 6 - Full charge/$495. This schedule will be followed with no exceptions.
 
The Luther Magazine  seeks students' photos from study away experiences spring 2017 through J-term 2018 for our spring issue. All who send photos will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Luther gift card. Submit up to 6 photos. M ake sure to include what program you were on and your class year, and tell us, in two or three sentences, what inspired you to take each photo. Send photos by March 6 to [email protected].

The Luther College Ticket Office will be taking applications for employment for the fall semester until February 19 at 3:00 p.m. Pick up your application at the Ticket Office in the Center for Faith and Life.
