MLK - From Memphis . . . to Montgomery: Notes in Transition

Dear friends,

1. In many of our churches this weekend mention will be made and thanks offered for the prophetic witness of Martin Luther King Jr., whose courage changed our nation. Having grown up in Memphis, I cannot help but remember his involvement in the sanitation workers' strike, which led to his murder. I was probably just a few miles away from where it happened at that time. I was in high school. I had the opportunity a couple of months later to stand in the spot from which he proclaimed, "I have been to the mountaintop!" While I served in Statesville, I was honored one year to keynote the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Breakfast. I recalled how Jimmy Carter said King brought freedom to white Southerners too. More than that, we recall King's own courageous example of standing against injustice and for human rights, an example that encourages us in our time too.

2.  You may have seen my reflections and heard those of some Salem folk who took part in November's Civil Rights Pilgrimage to sites in Alabama. I want to let you know of a new opportunity being offered through the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic. The synod is eager to recruit a diverse delegation of participants who will visit the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial to Peace and Justice in Montgomery. Those who take part will need to arrange their own transportation, but synod will cover all costs otherwise, thanks to a generous grant from the Presbytery of Newcastle. Participants will travel on Thursday, February 6, visit sites and reflect on the experience with the group on Friday, February 7, and return on Saturday, February 8. The new film Just Mercy , about the work of Bryan Stevenson in addressing injustice, especially visited upon people of color and especially with regard to the death penalty (I recommend the movie), keeps these issues before us. If you have interest in the synod experience, please contact me, and I will share further information. Depending on interest, we might be able to arrange some shared transportation with another presbytery.

Grace and peace!

Healthy Boundaries

Healthy Boundaries CORE training event will be held Monday, January 27 from 9:30 - 12:30 at the Presbytery office.  COM has determined that all active clergy and other church professionals are required to attend one CORE and one elective training workshop every three years.  The online directory will show you the dates of your latest Healthy Boundaries training should you have a question about your eligibility status. Registration is limited, so sign up through the link below.

Salem Online Resources

Take advantage of this handy resource, to which you have access through the Salem Presbytery website. As our staff grows smaller, and as fewer are available to answer the phone, you will find this directory easier to use (password = clemmons3950) than calling the presbytery to get phone numbers and email addresses of committee members or others you want to be in touch with. If using a list you received an email that bounces back, check the directory.
