January's Legislative Day on the Hill:
Members Impact the Florida Legislature
Florida lawmakers were visited in their capitol offices in Tallahassee by nearly 100 NAIFA-Florida members to discuss issues vital to the interests of our members - during our Legislative Day-on-the-Hill, on January 23.
At the morning orientation breakfast on the FSU campus, Lobbyist Tim Meenan led members through a discussion of the talking points of our top-three issues, to prepare them for their appointments with legislators later in the day.
Those issues are:
1) Support for bills granting advisors discretion to place a hold on exploitive financial transactions to protect senior assets (SB 662 and HB 681)
2) Support for bills aimed at stopping vendors from forcing homeowners to sign away their property insurance rights -- AOB (SB 62 and HB 7015)
3) Oppose bills which would mandate payment of claims for unpaid health insurance premium (SB 162 and HB 217)
In addition to Meenan's orientation, newly-appointed CFO Jimmy Patronis spoke during the breakfast, welcoming everyone to Tallahassee and then gave a brief update about the happenings at the Department of Financial Services (DFS).
With talking points and leave-behind position papers in hand, members visited with legislators in group fashion throughout the day, with most local-association delegations visiting multiple Senate and House members. NAIFA-Florida members were seen in all areas of the capitol building heading in and out of legislators offices.
Members were then welcomed to an evening cocktail reception and dinner at The Dogwood House outdoor venue near the host hotel. A bonfire on a chilly January evening, combined with dinner music and plenty of food and drink topped off the day!
The date for NAIFA-Florida's Legislative Day-on-the-Hill for 2019 has not been announced yet, so watch for notices to come in the near future. Make plans to attend - you are needed in Tallahassee!!
