The fall rains have finally come to Oregon and hopefully, it will start building the important snow pack that our forests and rivers will need for the coming year. As many of us begin to thinking of snow sports, quiet hikes in the outdoors, or savoring the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, I want to thank all of you who are doing so much that is important for communities across the state.
I am deeply humbled and pleased to announce that the 2020 NAO board has been voted into service through the action of our members in the October elections. We are delighted to have a talented group of four new board members joining the amazing team of leaders already serving Oregon's nonprofit sector. Welcome to our new NAO board members set to join the NAO board in 2020.

ReputationUs and NAO chose one lucky NAO nonprofit member as the recipient of the Nonprofit Reputation Program. Congratulations Camp Fire Central Oregon!
Nonprofits want to tell their stories and support their causes. To do this successfully, nonprofits must, among many other things, take care of their reputation. On November 26, ReputationUs and NAO randomly selected one deserving NAO nonprofit member out of a pool of applicants to receive six months of pro bono reputation management support for their organization in 2020 (a value of $14,000). The

Five Board Dysfunctions that Create Chaos

The nonprofit board is a structure with many positive features and the best of intentions. Often, it works out just fine. Then there are the exceptions. In a recent blog, "The Single Worst Practice" Scott wrote about a fascinating finding of the three-year applied research project conducted by Public Interest Management Group in partnership with the Nonprofit Association of Oregon and Impact Foundry. The data shows, among many other things, that the least successful nonprofits tend to share an attribute that their most successful peers lack: their boards often played a dominant role in decision-making. I call this "The Over-Engaged Board."

Ophelia's Place is a prevention-based, non-profit organization dedicated to helping girls ages 10-18 make healthy life choices through empowerment, education, and support while navigating the joys and challenges of their teen years. We support girls with after-school drop-in, after and out-of-school youth activities, support groups, and individual and family therapy. Ophelia's Place supports both girls and boys with classroom presentations and parent training, school partnerships and resource and referral services.

Washington County Kids is a champion for kids. WCK builds partnerships, working locally to support academic and social success for children and youth in Washington County. WCK focuses on current programs designed to support under-served children and youth. Their goal is to secure sustainable funding for the programs that do good but simply need to be expanded so significantly more children may be served.

13 Lucky Year-End Fundraising Tips

This is the time when your annual fundraising goals will likely be met, surpassed or put on life support. Because even if you operate on a fiscal year, now is the time when people do most of their annual giving. 50% of nonprofits receive a majority of their annual contributions from October to December. In fact, over 30% of donations are made during the month of December alone.
Use these year-end fundraising tips to help you to start developing a strategy for the end of 2020 and beyond. It's never too early to plan ahead!
