           Urinary Incontinence Study in Swine

Urinary incontinence is an underdiagnosed and underreported problem that increases with age-affecting 50-84% of the elderly in long-term care facilities. Urine leakage associated with increased abdominal pressure from laughing, sneezing, other physical stressors on the bladder is known as stress incontinence. Mixed incontinence is a combination of stress and urge incontinence, marked by involuntary leakage associated with urgency and also with exertion, effort, sneezing, or coughing and functional incontinence is the inability to hold urine due to reasons other than neuro-urologic and lower urinary tract dysfunction.

Care recently did a study where swine bladders were implanted with an innovative balloon device containing electrodes. Selected tissue was ablated to effect a cure for urinary incontinence. The balloon served to cushion the bladder during moments of increased abdominal pressure.
