Feb. Dinner
Special Guest Speaker

Barbara Schultz
Aviation Researcher, Author

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2019
No Host Bar starts at 5:30 p.m.
Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.

Barbara Schultz is a well-respected researcher in the field of aviation. She has written several aviation history books - " Pancho: The Biography of Florence Lowe Barnes"; " Wedell-Williams Air Service"; " Flying Carpets, Flying Wings: The Biography of Moye W. Stephens"; " Endorsed by Earhart: How Amelia Financed Her Flying"; and " Pioneering Aviation in Kern County." She is also a contributor to the American Aviation Historical Society Journal and participant in several aviation documentaries as well as a former Trustee for the 99s Museum of Women Pilots in Oklahoma City.

Always looking for a challenge, a good friend suggested to Barbara Schultz that she learn to fly.  When she returned from a three month overland trip to South America, she headed out to Fox Field in Lancaster, California to become a pilot - not having any idea what that entailed. Pancho Barnes' son Bill gave her an introductory flight. She told him it was far from being introductory, it would be her first lesson. She was assigned an instructor by Shouling Barnes, Bill's wife and told she needed to take a written exam if she ever wanted to get a pilot's license. Not realizing she could actually take a class, she took the FAA manual back to her cabin in Lake Hughes, studied, and pasted the test with flying colors. The hard part was learning that she was the one in control in the cockpit, not the airplane.  Many, many hours passed before she soloed. Cross-countries were exciting, sometimes she didn't read the map quite right but figured she would eventually find her way - which obviously she did. Words like "confident" and "pride" resonate when she remembered the day Bill Barnes signed off on her check ride.

In addition to becoming a pilot at Fox Field Airport, she met her future husband Phil Schultz who was just finishing up a restoration on his 1931 Stinson. Part of this meeting was encouraged by Shouling. "You should meet Mr. Schultz; he's a very nice man - flies jets and sees the world." And the rest of the story - Phil and Barbara were married and eventually had two wonderful sons.

Moving Forward Again!

There has been a lot going on in the background during the past six months Estrella Warbirds Museum was granted additional acreage for expansion. Recently, a very generous donor has provided funding specifically for the required utilities and foundational work which must be completed before additional facilities can be constructed. This will include expansion of the sewer lines, electrical, gas, grading upgrades, drawings, permits, etc.  We are very grateful for this un-named (at his request) beneficiary and specific arrangements have been made to insure the funding is utilized solely for this endeavor.
Future plans (currently on the drawing board), include a new meeting hall/ conference center, new hangars and expanded artifact display facilities. After finalizing the expansion project plans, we will begin the process of raising funds to cover the new facilities.   We are very grateful to all individuals, past and present, whom have donated funds, time and energy to insure the museum continues to grow.  If you are interested in assisting with future expansion, we would love to hear from you!  Call us or click on the below link, send us your contact info and someone will be in touch.  Thank you for your dedication and service!
