Season's Greetings!
Twenty years ago this month, an event occurred that led to the formation of our organization. For those of you who may not know:
December, 1999: Penobscot Indian Nation officials discovered that people using their land were destroying trees, hunting without permission, using all-terrain vehicles and littering. Because of that, the Penobscots had decided to post no-trespassing signs on 23,390 acres they owned in Carrabassett Valley, the acreage covering more than half of the western Maine town. This could have led to serious impacts on local tourism and recreation.
Surprised and concerned local citizens, led by then-CV Town Selectman John McCatherin, gathered to discuss the situation. Town officials then met with the Penobscot Nation to discuss the issue of the posted lands. McCatherin reported that, “The discussions were candid and the list of proposed solutions to some of the problems cited by the Nation were warmly received,” and eventually the situation was resolved and recreational activity resumed.
And the best part was that as a result of the first meeting, some of these local citizens decided to form a group to further promote recreation and conservation in the western mountains of Maine - and CVOA was formed! Kudos to our founders: John McCatherin, George Abbott, Don Fowler, Annie Tuell, Neal Trask, Sherie Packard, and Paul Houlares, as well as the late Dick Crommett. If you see any of these still-local people around, make sure to thank them for having the foresight to create an organization that has grown to over 1,000 people, with a great mission that we all continue to enjoy and promote to this day – 20 years young!
Just in case you didn’t know, next month CVOA will be having a BIG celebration for its 20
th

Jeannette and Michael Parker will host a Cookie swap at their home on Saturday, December 14, 3 to 5 pm. Full details below.
On December 8, Sunday afternoon bowling at the SugarBowl will resume for the winter.
We are looking for a full moon adventure for the evening of February 8, 2020. Ski and stew at the outdoor center? Interested in coordinating this event? It is lots of fun.

Annual Cookie Swap (...and hike?)

Save the date, and think about what cookies you'll bring to share!
Jeannette and Mike Parker will host the cookie swap at their 1022 Poplar Stream Road home. Plan to bring 3 dozen cookies and a container to bring your share home.
Jeannette will be making a non-alcoholic holiday punch, and BYOB. For your punch or otherwise!
If you WISH to bring an appetizer, please let Jeannette know (jparker16seabreeze@gmail.com) – no need for everyone to bring apps
and
cookies.
Perhaps we will have an early afternoon walk or ski beforehand. Any ideas?

Celebrate CVOA ~ 20th in 2020

This is going to be a fun night of celebrating CVOA … its beginning, its people and all that it has accomplished in 20 years!
Here are the details for the evening:
- 5:30 to 6:15: Social time, trivia contest, and on-going slide show
- 6:15: Buffet Dinner: Caesar salad, marinated grilled flank steak, roasted salmon, roasted potatoes, fresh vegetable, rolls & butter, and dessert (dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice)
- 7:00: Program to honor our Founders, followed by Maine comedian “Jimmy Brown”
- 7:45 to 9:00: Elvis impersonator “EP Rocks” for entertainment and dancing

Reservations are now being taken.
- As with past functions, we will be taking pre-paid reservations only.
- However, your checks will be held until the day of the event.
- Your reservation can be cancelled (and your check voided) through Monday, January 13.
- After that date, we will make every effort to fill a cancellation with a new reservation.
To reserve your seats,
mail a check for $35 per person, made out to “CVOA” to CVOA, Valley Crossing #6, CV, ME 04947, including the attendee names. Reservations paid with cash may be delivered in an envelope to Cindy Foster or Bonnie Farrar.
Members are welcome to bring guests; please pay for their reservation with a separate check, yours or their own. Be sure to note they are your guests, and include their names. This event will not be open to the general public.
Your early reservations will help us in our event planning.
In early January, you will receive a reminder of the cancellation deadline, so don't worry about forgetting!

Our shooting season for 5 Stand and Trap has come to a close . . . However:
Our Pistol and Rifle Ranges will remain open throughout the winter season
. Our hours of operation are sunrise to sunset. Please note, our law enforcement officers may need use of the Range for training. That training may be after sunset, and may require full use of the Range. Your understanding is appreciated.
Also note, ours is a passive Range and it is your responsibility to follow all posted rules unless otherwise approved by a Range Officer.
If you use the range, please replace the padlock UNDER the rubber flap to keep the lock dry.

YOU DID IT!! We met the minimal order number and have sent the requests to our supplier. I GET LUNCH. I know I should not be thinking about food so soon after Thanksgiving but I AM.
I am very thankful you all pitched in and ordered the CVOA LOGO APPAREL. Should take about 6 weeks for delivery. For those who ordered in October, thank you for your patience. I can't wait to see all the envious looks from others when we strut our CVOA hats, vests, and jackets.
Ok, Cindy, did I warn you about my appetite after a day of skiing? And let's just say Bonnie forgets her wallet when I come to visit and we all go out to eat.

Do you enjoy Ski History? Do you like visiting and meeting new people? Do you have a few hours you could spare? If so, we are
seeking volunteers to staff the Ski Museum of Maine in Kingfield on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4pm during ski season.
You can volunteer for one day or as many days as you wish. It is easy, fun and would greatly assist the museum.

The Sugarloaf Charity Summit will return to the mountain for its twentieth year on Saturday, January 25, 2020. The funds raised will go to support three organizations that help Mainers facing cancer.
