Summertime Is Here

The weather is heating up and for-hire vehicle operators are facing the challenges of managing the impacts of higher temperatures, including the use of air conditioning, increased fuel costs, and more visitors to the District. Higher temperatures can also lead to short tempers. All drivers are encouraged to take the free online training courses to help with resolving potential conflicts.

In addition, drivers are advised to be extra cautious about leaving vehicles unattended with windows open. As part of the Back to Basics DC Initiative, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Metropolitan Police Department recently announced safety tips for preventing vehicle thefts and break-ins including keeping valuables out of sight, securing electronic devices, and locking doors.

Enjoy the sunshine. Provide riders with excellent customer service. Maintain your vehicle. And do your best to be cool.
DTS Tele-Town Hall

The Digital Taxicab Solution (DTS) will help level the competitive playing field for taxicabs when fully implemented by September 1, 2017. To give the industry a greater understanding of the transition to DTS, DFHV will conduct a telephone-based town hall. The DTS tele- town hall is scheduled for  Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 1:00 pm. Participants will be able to ask the Director questions about DTS, and get status updates regarding installations, technologies, pricing, and more. Mark your calendar and stay tuned for the participant call-in number.

Pilot Program Generates New Revenue

Vehicles On Demand
The Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) in partnership with the Department of Public Works (DPW) has launched the Vehicles on Demand (VOD) pilot program. A specified number of District Government employees will be able to use DC taxicabs to travel in the city for official business. To participate drivers must do the following:
  • Download and log in to the DCTaxiApp

  • Watch this video to learn how to identify trips for this pilot program

  • ADDED INCENTIVE - Receive at least $2.00 for every completed qualified trip through this pilot program

  • Payments are deposited daily into a driver's account setup by the DC Transportation Group (DCTG), also known as the COOP. Help with setting up an account is available on DCTaxi.com

  • No money will be exchanged as the trip is paid through the Corporate Account

  • No credit card fees or deductions

Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous (or self-driving) vehicles are coming soon! Major companies such as Google, Apple, Uber, General Motors, and Ford are among those investing in the technology to innovate how the public will be transported from Point A to Point B. The District Government has formed a working group with representatives from several agencies under the leadership of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development. The autonomous vehicle can provide new transportation options for the elderly, persons with disabilities, medical transit, youths, and those who otherwise do not or cannot operate a motor vehicle.  T he Bloomberg Aspen Initiative on Cities and Autonomous Vehicles recently named Washington, DC along with  Helsinki, Finland; London, England; São Paulo, Brazil; and, Tel Aviv, Israel as cities to join an inaugural group of locales that will develop principles and tools that cities can use to plan for the coming revolution in self-driving technologies.
