This DVD series is intended to guide riders through the American System of Forward Riding and give them a visual image of the performance they are working to achieve. Riders may use the series as a guide for “home schooling”. Teachers may utilize the system as an instructional framework for teaching, and using portions of the DVD series as instructional demonstrations to compliment their lessons. The workbooks in PDF format accompany the DVD Series Volumes one and two. Visit the

Zone 10 Photo Highlight: Mila Slutzky
|
|
Mila was thrilled to compete in the Affiliate Championships during the AON/USHJA National Championships.
“This show is so different from any other show, but it’s fun to try new experiences,” Mila said. “This is my first time in Vegas and I’ve had a blast.” Mila competed with her horse Love and Honor, who she has been showing for about two years. “He is 18; he teaches me a lot and is such a good horse!”
The Affiliate Championships were a fantastic opportunity for many riders who wouldn’t have ordinarily qualified for the championships. Each USHJA Affiliate Member Organization recommended three horse and rider combinations per section and in Mila’s case, she was nominated by affiliate LEGIS League.
“This has been a great learning experience,” Mila shared. “I think what I’ll take away is to always try your hardest.”
Though this show year is over, Mila is looking forward to earning more experience in the hunter ring and competing in larger hunter derbies next year.

Sport History: Fun Facts from the USHJA Wheeler Museum

The Military Roots of American Equitation
Italian Cavalry officer Federico Caprilli pioneered the “forward riding system” of sitting lighter and more forward, using shorter stirrups to rise out of saddle, and going with the forward motion of a horse’s head and neck over jumps with a following release.
Show Jumping Hall of Famer US Army Brigadier General Harry D. Chamberlin, a graduate of West Point, attended at the Italian and French cavalry schools in the 1920s, bringing the forward riding system back to the US Cavalry School at Fort Riley, Kansas. He won Individual Silver in Jumping and Team Gold in Eventing at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.
Chamberlin rewrote the army’s horsemanship manual and created a show team to compete internationally and on the American fall horse show circuit in Washington, New York, and Toronto. His Riding and Schooling Horses (1934) and Training Hunters, Jumpers and Hacks (1937) became the foundation for the American style of today’s hunter, jumper, and equitation disciplines.
