Each day at Festival we will get to hear the thoughts of our in-Festival adjudicator on the performance the previous evening. Here is an introduction to Caroline Smith, our adjudicator for the week..
Since 1979, Caroline Smith has worked professionally as a performer, choreographer, director, teacher, adjudicator and playwright in theatres across the country, including the Shaw Festival and the Canadian Opera Company.
From 1996 to 2009, Caroline was Artistic and Managing Director of the Stirling Festival Theatre. Under her leadership, the company won three Lieutenant Governor's Arts Awards and numerous business achievement awards. In 2001, Caroline was presented with an honorary Arts degree from Loyalist College for outstanding work in enhancing and promoting the arts in the Quinte (Eastern Ontario) area.
A published playwright, Caroline's popular Panto scripts are produced by theatres across Ontario including Drayton Entertainment. Her comedy The Kitchen Witches was the winner of the 2005 Samuel French Best Canadian Play Award, and her comedy-thriller To Die For was also published by Samuel French in 2017.
After many years of dance adjudication, Caroline has recently enjoyed being Adjudicator for the ACT-CO Festival, in the Musical category in 2017/18 and Comedies in 2018/19. In 2018, she adjudicated the London One-Act-Festival (LOAF) and facilitated an intensive theatre workshop in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
Currently, Caroline has a busy career as a freelance Guest Director, most recently for the Capitol Theatre Port Hope, Campbellford's Westben Theatre, the Toronto Film School, the Highlands and Muskoka Festivals and St. Lawrence Shakespeare Company. She is also dramaturge for Gaslight Productions in Collingwood, assisting local writers in historical play development.
