Summertime is here! The Downtown Beautification Committee has completed their flower boxes and decorations at the War Memorial and Clock Tower. Thank you to all the business owners for watering and the TLC that will keep downtown looking great.
I attended two D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduations last week. I want to thank St. Joseph’s and Park Campus School’s for offering this program to their elementary students. I also want to thank our own Round Lake Police Department specifically Nina Larson for presenting the program. We had a combined total of 122 graduates. This program teaches our young students valuable life lessons for making good decisions and creates a permanent trusting relationship with police officers. In the wake of the growing heroin and opioid epidemic, Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program must always be available to every school’s curriculum.

Cedar Lake Road Reconstruction:
Public Information Meeting

The Lake County Department of Transportation will be hosting an open house to discuss the upcoming work on Cedar Lake Road between IL Route 120 and Nippersink Road.
The culvert under the road will be replaced, the road will be widened and a multi-use path will be installed along the east side of the road. Representatives from Lake County will be available to explain the project and answer questions.
When: Wednesday, June 7th from 5:00-7:00 PM

Summer Driving Tips
School is out for summer and Round Lake would like to remind drivers about the importance of keeping children safe throughout the summer months.
- Drivers should be alert, especially in residential areas.
- Expect the unexpected, children may suddenly run or ride in front of you.
- Obey all laws. Slow down if there are children along the road or crossing the street.
- Be predictable, don’t make sudden maneuvers that others are not expecting.
- Double check behind and around you when backing out of a driveway or parking space.
- Don’t be distracted. Put down the coffee and the cell phone.
- Yield the right of way to pedestrians. It isn’t just courteous, it’s the law.
- Parents can help by reminding their children about staying safe on the roads.
Pool Safety
Millions of us enjoy warm weather every year by swimming in our backyard pools and relaxing in hot tubs. Tragically though, over 200 young children drown in backyard swimming pools each year. The American Red Cross suggests owners make pool safety their priority by following these guidelines:
- Secure your pool with appropriate barriers.
- Place a safety cover on the pool when not in use and remove any ladders or steps used for access.
- Consider installing a pool alarm that goes off if anyone enters the pool.
- Keep children under active supervision at all times.
- Enroll children in age-appropriate learn-to-swim courses available through the Round Lake Area Park District.
- Establish and enforce rules and safe behaviors, such as “no diving,” “stay away from drain covers,” “swim with a buddy” and always “walk, do not run.”
- Ensure everyone in the home knows how to respond to aquatic emergencies by having appropriate safety equipment and taking water safety first-aid and CPR courses.
The American Red Cross and National Swimming Pool Foundation® have partnered to create an online Home Pool Essentials course that describes steps home pool owners can take to prevent tragedy and keep a well maintained pool or hot tub. Planning a Vacation
Whether you are a frequent traveler or just planning a short weekend getaway, please consider that whenever you leave your home for any period of time, proper planning is imperative to keeping your home and valuables safe. Here are some tips to help make that next travel period is a safe one.
- Sign up for a FREE vacation home check with the Round Lake Police Department.
- Have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail, newspaper and packages. This will give extra eyes on your home in your absence.
- If you don’t have a neighbor, put a stop on your mail and newspaper.
- If you always park in the driveway, ask a neighbor to park there in your absence.
- Set interior and exterior lights on timers.
- Try to make your home look lived in when you are not there. Make sure all your doors and windows are LOCKED. Especially the garage window on the side of the house – a favorite entry point for a would-be Burglar.
- Set your alarm prior to leaving and make sure your alarm company knows you’re gone, so they can call the police immediately.
- Don’t post your life on social media, you never know who is watching and sees that you are away.
- NEVER leave a spare key where someone can find it.

Help Prevent Storm Water Pollution
The following are some tips to help prevent storm water pollution and protect our natural resources in Round Lake:
- Never dump anything down a storm drain. Always recycle used oil, antifreeze and other fluids.
- Wash your car at a commercial car wash rather than in the street or in your drive way.
- Cut down on fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
- Pick up after your pets and keep animals out of streams.

Water Conservation....Reduce Your Use
|
As summer approaches, please remember that the Village does have water system conservation from May 15th through September 15th of each year. Specifically, Monday through Friday:
- The use of a landscape irrigation system is prohibited between the hours of 12:01 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., except that newly sodded or seeded areas of lawns may be watered at any time for a two-week period following installation of such sod or planting of such seed.
- For outdoor water use, even addresses may only water on even calendar days and odd addresses may only water on odd calendar days. Permitted use includes watering lawns, flowers, gardens and washing cars and vehicles.

The annual water quality report for the period of January 1 through December 31, 2016 is now available.

Public Works is expecting to begin flushing fire hydrants in June. While conducting the flush, staff inspects the hydrants to make sure they are in good working condition. Signs will be posted to the entrances of a neighborhood a few days before flushing starts.
Residents may notice a slight discoloration of the water after flushing. This is not harmful and will dissipate after a short time. It is recommended that you do not do laundry on the day that hydrant flushing takes place in your area.

Save the Date for National Night Out
|
The Round Lake Police Department and the Village of Round Lake will be hosting a '"National Night Out Against Crime" on Tuesday, August 1st from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Round Lake Police Department and Public Works Facility, 741 W. Townline Road.
This is a nationwide event that promotes community awareness and spirit. It also enables our citizens to meet and greet community leaders and members. There will be fun activities for everyone, including a car cruise with prizes. Free hot dogs and other treats will be served. We hope to see you all there!

The Cop on a Rooftop event held at Dunkin’ Donuts to benefit Special Olympics Illinois was held on Friday, May 19th. For the 15th year in a row, hundreds of law enforcement officers from throughout the state took part in the Dunkin’ Donuts rooftop to raise awareness and donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.
The Village thanks all Police Officers including the Village of Round Lake Police Officers who took part in supporting the Cop on Top event.

Congratulations to Round Lake Police Sergeant Peter Marquardt for attending and graduating from Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC). The SPSC is an intensive ten-week program intended for mid- and upper-level management personnel to prepare law enforcement managers for senior positions by uniquely combining academic principles with practical applications.

Don't miss the annual 4th of July parade hosted by Avon Township Youth Baseball on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at 9:00 am. The parade route will begin at Hawthorne Rd. in Round Lake Beach to Cedar Lake Road towards Washington St., East on Washington St. towards Hainesville Rd. The parade will conclude at Union Square Park.

Reminder....Curbside garbage collection containers should be placed at the curbside no sooner than 6:00 pm the day before the regularly scheduled garbage collection day and should be removed from the curbside no later than 6:00 am the day after.
