IWH Study Helping Us Better Understand Cannabis Use in Canadian Workplaces

The
Institute for Work and Health
is leading a study looking at cannabis use in Canadian workplaces from 2018-2021. The first pre-legalization survey found that 24% of people using cannabis in BC and Ontario reported using cannabis before or at work. A recent
infographic
outlines the major findings of the June 2018 survey. Stay tuned for findings from the first post-legalization survey.

The WSIB has a NEW Health and Safety incentive program for employers in the province of Ontario.
The Health and Safety Excellence program
is designed to create a safer workplace and save money.
The new program provides a roadmap for businesses to improve workplace safety, whether they are just getting started or want to optimize what they already have in place.
Businesses that are successful in the program will earn $$$$ Rebates and other non-financial recognition for their investment in health and safety.
Registration for the new program is now open for the 2020 program year.

Through the new Supporting Ontario’s Safe Employers program and/or Health and Safety Excellence Program, employers may receive recognition of their health and safety efforts and receive Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (“WSIB”) premium rebates if they successfully implement occupational health and safety management systems (“OHSMS”).

"Approximately one in five violent incidents in Canada occurs at work, often leading to injuries and lost-time injury claims."
The report is now available which shares research on workplace violence and harassment conducted by PSHSA on behalf of the CSA Group.
The purpose of this research was to identify the extent of workplace violence and harassment across Canada, the availability of guidance resources, gaps in effective prevention and mitigation strategies, and the need for national standards or additional guidance.

Construction company embraces frank talk about mental health to reduce suicide
"Construction and mining...
have the highest suicide rates of all occupations
, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And the suicide rate for working-age adults has been rising in the U.S., increasing by 34% to 17.3 suicides per 100,000 in 2015 from 12.9 in 2012."
