The Class of 2017 said good bye to the title "student doctor" last month and embarked upon their professional journey. At a convocation ceremony held at NJPAC in Newark, 117 graduates were reminded of all they had achieved and what made their class unique. The class was an electic mix that included a firefighter, a radio disc jockey, a Bollywood dancer and a member who once operated the scoreboard at Yankee Stadium.  LEARN MORE

Scholarship honors special care pioneers

When Drs. Justin Stone and Robert Kroll opened their dental practice in 1961, they knew patients with disabilities had trouble finding dentists. Over the years, they built a thriving practice for special needs patients and established RSDM's special care clinic. An endowed scholarship for RSDM students specializing in the field was named for them and awarded to its first recipient, Chelsea Rajagopalan. LEARN MORE

Indian student group celebrates across cultures

At RSDM, a diverse range of student groups bond over common traditions. But for many, another goal is sharing their culture with others.
The Indian Student Dental Association is proud of its reputation for hosting festivals and other events that welcome students of all nationalities. For three years, the association has organized a mini Holi festival, where students throw colored powder at each other to celebrate a Hindu rite of spring.  LEARN MORE

Never Too Late
Grad achieves dream

At 65, Husham Edani is the oldest graduate in the history of RSDM. "To be a student at this age, it wasn't easy,'' admits Edani, who was vice-chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Baghdad University before fleeing Iran in 2003. But his  persistence  and dedication paid off. "I have energy because I work very hard and I like this field. I don't want to be away. I like to work with patients,'' he says.  LEARN MORE

Early Detection
RSDM holds oral cancer screening

More than 200 Essex County area residents were examined at a free oral screening and health fair held at RSDM last month.  The health fair helps raise awareness of the disease among the public and visiting patients, most of whom are underserved.   LEARN MORE

Student receives Fauchard Award
Dr. Kim Fenesy and Celalettin N. Sevindik

Celalettin N. Sevindik was the winner of this year's Pierre Fauchard Academy scholarship award. It goes to third-year student leaders who display "integrity, imagination, initiative and communication skills. Earlier this year, Sevindik was the recepient of a $10,000 OKU Dr. William S. Kramer Award of Excellence scholarship, which is awarded for academic excellence, exemplary traits of character and the potential promise for future professional growth and attainment. Sevindik loves dentistry because it can make a big difference in the space of one visit. "It's amazing, they come here in pain, they have complaints and after you treat them, they're happy. It makes you feel really good,'' he says.
