UI to welcome Mandela Washington Fellows this summer
Beginning in mid-June, the UI will host 25 of Africa's brightest emerging business and entrepreneurship leaders, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The UI is one of 27 institutions chosen this year to host the larger group of 700 Mandela Washington Fellows (selected from the more than 37,000 applicants) visiting institutions across the United States this summer. UI undergraduates awarded prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Chosen from thousands of applicants from colleges and universities across the U.S., Gilman scholarship recipients receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad or internship program costs. Against Amnesia: Archives, Evidence, and Social Justice
Practicing archivists, engaged scholars, and interdisciplinary artists will share projects from guerrilla archiving of climate data to mining corporate records for evidence of organized violence. The symposium will also include the
2018 Joel Barkan Memorial Lecture.

WorldCanvass
Join us for the first event of the 2018 Provost's Global Forum - Obermann Humanities Symposium, Against Amnesia: Archives, Evidence, and Social Justice. Panelists at this month's WorldCanvass will open the virtual doors of archival cabinets and share some of Iowa's and our nation's most intriguing stories and little-known history. WorldCanvass will take place from 5:30-7 p.m., February 22, at MERGE, 136 South Dubuque Street. The program is free and open to the public. Please come early for a pre-show catered reception from 5-5:30 p.m.

Japanese program presents documentary film series
Join the University of Iowa Japanese Program and the Department of Cinematic Arts for a series of documentary film screenings with Japanese filmmakers Mori Tatsuya, Nakamura Takayuki, and Kana Tomoko.

WorldCanvass
On Thursday, March 1, from 5:30-7 p.m., the internationally acclaimed Elias String Quartet will take WorldCanvass inside the process of music-making. In a performance-filled program called Translating Music, members of the quartet and Elizabeth Oakes, director of the University of Iowa String Quartet Residency Program in the UI School of Music, will discuss what it takes to bring a piece to life by focusing on two themes-nationality in music and storytelling through music.
