Dear St. Francis of Assisi Parents and Guardians,

I am sure that we are all feeling anxious after another incident of school violence with the shooting in Florida last Thursday.  It is troubling and disconcerting to us all. I consider schools to be a sacred space for children,  so I cannot imagine how or why these things happen. In the wake of any tragedy at a school, families wonder how prepared their own school is to respond to emergencies.  With this in mind, I would like to share a few things that I hope will provide some reassurance during anxious times such as now.  We do many things at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School to ensure our school, students, and staff are safe.

Fortunately, we are blessed with very safe school surroundings in a facility designed to be warm and friendly to all who come to our school.  It is our intent to maintain a welcoming environment; however, balancing that objective while also prioritizing the safety of students and staff through security measures is critically important.  In support of our commitment to this issue, we implemented several security measures over the last few years:
  • Quick release deadbolt door locks for all exterior doors entering classrooms, Glynn Center, and offices.
  • Protective film on all doors and windows.  The protective film makes it difficult to access a room by breaking a window.
  • Access control gates at both the front entrance to the school and the Pre-K entrance restrict access to the school during the school day as well as extended care.
  • Access control locks on all Pre-K doors that exit to the parking lot.  These doors are not used for drop off and pick up during the school day as well as extended care.
  • We operate a closed campus, secured by perimeter fencing and access control gates.  The gates are only open during drop off and pick up.
  • Surveillance camera system that includes thirty-two high resolution IP digital cameras that can be remotely monitored.
Additionally, we have procedures in place to address emergency situations.  We will review our emergency plans to apply best practices as they continue to evolve.
  • Multi-hazard emergency procedures for lockdown, fire, earthquake, and hazardous materials.  Every classroom has emergency plans that describe actions to take place during an emergency.  The school regularly conducts practice drills.
  • Faculty and staff received "active intruder" training by law enforcement.  We have a strong working relationship with local police and fire agencies.
  • Teachers and staff can access any classroom or office using classroom phones as well as allow for 911 calls. School wide intercom system allows for school wide communication.
  • Walkie-Talkies are used to communicate with supervisors during recess, lunch, and extended care.
  • Visitor check-in procedures and campus alarms linked to a 24/7 alarm company.
My hope is that this information will provide some level of comfort;  however, I need your help to support the measures we have in place.  The best deterrent to problems on a school campus is an alert parent.  Be the eyes and ears in our school community.  As educators, entrusted with the well being of all our students, I want to assure you that student, faculty, staff, and visitor safety is always a top priority at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School.  I want to partner with you to ensure that St. Francis School remains a safe and enriching learning environment for all.
