Progress Reports Released Friday, Feb. 16th
There is no school on Monday, February 19 due to the Presidents' Day holiday. Classes will resume on schedule Tuesday morning. If you have a student attending LNMS, please carve out a few minutes over the long weekend to review their 2017-2018 Quarter 3 Progress Report. These were distributed on Friday.
2018 Parent Survey
We still have some distance to cover in order to achieve the 20% response rate on this year's survey. We depend heavily on the responses from the annual survey for school improvement efforts. Please, if you have a student at LNMS and have yet to complete the survey kindly do so soon. Thank you.

A Special Message from the OCPS Superintendent of Schools for our LNMS Families:
Parents and guardians,
In light of the tragedy in Broward County, please know that OCPS has significant and confidential measures in place for the safety of our students and staff. We are working with law enforcement to coordinate additional surveillance of schools for the next few days. Please reassure your children who may be disturbed by this event, and let them know they can talk to counselors if they feel the need. We also want to remind them to always report any suspicious behavior to an adult, immediately. Our hearts are heavy for those impacted by this act of violence. I have been in communication with Broward County Supt. Runcie. Please keep them in your prayers.
~ Superintendent Barbara Jenkins
Joint Safety News Conference between OCPS & Local Law Enforcement
Thank you and please enjoy your Presidents' Day holiday.

To all Sun Games Participants,
Sun Games Design Notebooks have been graded and results have been given to the Team Captains. Grading Rubrics were returned with the Notebooks for review by the Captains. At the time of the return, Captains were given the chance to look over the results and point out "mistakes" in grading.
All teams that received a 90% or higher automatically move on to the Build/Test phase and Field Day portions of the Games. It is the expectation that if a student committed themselves to competing in the team project that they will move on to the Build, Test, and Field Day phases.
In an event to ensure that all students are given every opportunity to participate, we arranged for those students that received an 88% and above to make corrections over the weekend and turn in their corrected Design Notebook on Tuesday for clearance to participate in this year's Games.
Students who move on should expect a grade for all the phases of the Games.
We are excited to see what happens on Game Day! We know that the students will have a great time.
For additional questions or clarification, please contact your student's science teacher by way of email. They are all more than happy to assist.
Thanks for your support,
Lake Nona Middle School Science Team

Knight Yearbook Reminder!

The Scholastic Book Fair is here! Students have begun visiting the fair though their language arts classes and that will continue next week. The fair will be open through Friday the 23rd and students can come before school, during lunch, and after school as well. Scholastic has added a cashless EWallet option where parents can go online and fund a student's account. Any purchases made at the fair do help out the LNMS Media Center and its programs.
Here is the link to the fair homepage where you can set up an EWallet, shop online for many more selections, and view other fair information:

Special Message for LNMS Parents
|
Parents,
Some schools experienced security situations on Friday, resulting mostly from hoaxes. Principals and district police worked with local law enforcement on every issue that came up. We all take any threat very seriously. Principals try to keep parents informed in a timely manner, but their first priority is to ensure the safety of the students and staff on campus.
Pranks, hoaxes and rumors waste law enforcement resources and needlessly disrupt school. It also impedes a return to normalcy and the feeling of safety for our children.
The National Association of School Psychologists recommends that parents and school staff maintain normal routines and make the time to talk to children about any questions. For more information on "Talking to Children About Violence" visit www.nasponline.org/children-and-violence
Please remind students to report any concerns to an adult immediately. That includes any adult at school, or to you and law enforcement at home. Spreading the rumor to friends and on social media only makes matters worse. Our strategy must be, "Don't spread it, report it!"
We also wanted to remind you that schools are closed Monday in observance of Presidents' Day. We hope the three-day weekend can help with a return to normalcy.
Thank you for your continued support.

Monday's Motivational Moment
|
THE VALUE OF FIVE MINUTES
Napoleon wrote that the reason why he beat the Austrians was that they did not know the value of five minutes. It took Lincoln less than five minutes to deliver his immortal Gettysburg Address. It took William Jennings Bryan less than five minutes to electrify a great political convention with but a single expression that gave him the nomination for presidency of the United States. And in March 1783 with a potential mutiny at foot and 500 Continental Army officers waiting to hear Gen. George Washington's few written words, he fumbled in his pocket for his eyeglasses and said, "Gentlemen, you must pardon me for I have grown not only gray, but blind in in the service of my country." In just a few minutes the stunned officers mutinous mood gave way to affection of their commander and order was restored.
Until you value yourself,
you won't value your time. Until you value your time,
you will not do anything with it.
---------------
Enjoy the rest of your Presidents' Day weekend. I am looking forward to seeing everyone back on campus Tuesday morning!
Mrs. Jackson, Principal
Lake Nona Middle School Sunday, February 18, 2018
