ANNOUNCEMENTS
Pedro dos Santos and student Asha Aden will deliver the lecture, "What's to be Done? Humanizing the Syrian Refugee Crisis" on Tuesday, February 27, at 7:00 p.m.
in the CFL Recital Hall. As a daughter of two Somali refugees, Asha  will share her experiences growing up as part of a Somali refugee community in an American city, contextualizing the humanity of refugees and connecting to the current Syrian crisis. Reception to follow in Qualley Lounge.

Luther College alumnae Beth Ray Westlund, mezzo soprano, and Ann Elise Schoenecker, soprano, will present a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 23, in the Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.

Auditions for SPIN Theatre's spring play, Selections from The Private Lives of the Master Race by Bertolt Brecht are this week, Wednesday & Thursday, February 21-22 from 8:00-9:00 p.m. No preparation necessary, sign up for a time on the call board in the CFA! . Set in 1930's Germany, it loosely follows the career of one young man in the S.A. as he navigates his personal life while struggling to maintain his growing career with the Nazi Party.

Rod Dir will share how having a strategic vision, clear objectives and operational discipline can contribute to ongoing success.He has built several multi-million dollar businesses in competitive telecommunications markets such as wireless, mobile banking, and data analytics.Come hear how an internship with a CPA firm lead to a long and successful career in the telecommunications industry. Ethnic Arts Festival is Saturday, March 3, 2:00-5:00 p.m., in the Center for the Arts. The online meal registration is open! Tickets are $12, register now by clicking here. Deadline for registering is Wednesday, February 28, so be sure to sign up today! There is no charge for the 7:00 p.m. evening performances in the Center for Faith & Life.

OFF-CAMPUS STUDY APPLICATIONS DUE MARCH 1!  Thinking of studying abroad or elsewhere in the U.S. during summer 2018, fall 2018, spring 2019 or the 2018-19 year? If so, you need to complete a Luther application by March 1, in some cases earlier.  Fill out this form  to request the appropriate application
 and/or to talk about your plans!

Looking for a place to volunteer? Sign up to help package food for the Caf to Community program. On Sundays (6:30-8:00 p.m.) and Wednesdays (7:00-8:30 p.m.) throughout the school year we package up extra food from the cafeteria and donate to First Lutheran Food Pantry. Volunteering lasts usually for an hour and a half (or until food runs out). Questions about the program? Email Sarah.

The Diversity Center will have a Decorah Walmart shopping shuttle running from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25 . This is open to all students and there is no charge, but reservations are requested, please register here   . Students should meet in front of the Union. All times subject to change or times cancelled due to low numbers or other unexpected circumstances or bad weather. The next shopping shuttle is not until Saturday, March 17!
 
The Diversity Center has In-Town Bus tickets from the Northeast Iowa Community Action Transit system, available for $2 per ride. This includes the immediate town and as far as Walmart. It's a good deal - come buy yours at the Luther Diversity Center. Cash only, while they last. Students are responsible for scheduling their own rides with the transit.

Luther College was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Roy J.  Carver Charitable Trust to enhance curriculum and provide educational laboratory experiences for students in the new neuroscience major.

Center Stage Series

Center Stage Series presents Lamajamal Saturday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. Enjoy this band without borders as they perform cross-cultural music of Middle Eastern, North African, Balkan, and Roma traditions.

Photography captures more than a moment in time, it creates and adds to a larger narrative of history. "Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.: From Hate to Hope," a photography exhibit curated by Luther College students, is a commemoration of the life and tragic death of Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his assassination. The exhibit is on display from February 1 to April 6 in Preus Library, with a reception at 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, in the Preus Library, Hovde Room.

Speaking on the environment and public opinion in American politics, James Stoutenborough, assistant professor of Political Science from Idaho State University, will speak at 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, in the F. W. Olin Building, Room 102. Stoutenborough will present a project titled " Understanding Trust in Government: Environmental Sustainability, Fracking, and Public Opinion in American Politics."

To raise money and awareness to stop violence against women and girls, 18 Luther College students will present three benefit performances of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" February 22-24. The performances include heartwarming, funny, poignant and at times heartbreaking stories of women across the globe. Performances are at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, February 22-23, and 3 p.m. Saturday, February 24, in the Center for the Arts, Jewel Theatre.
SAC Cinema presents Thor: Ragnarok - Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk, his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thursday, February 22 in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Free with CAF and $5 without. Free popcorn while it lasts. Advance tickets available at the Box Office or online.  

J-term 2019 Off-campus Courses Announced!
Information Session will be held on Tuesday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Valders 206. There are 23 off-campus courses proposed for J-term 2019. Brochures will be available including application information.

The 2018 Erdman Prize Application Now Available - Have you ever started your own business? Applicants can be any full time Luther student of ANY MAJOR who has started and managed their own business. This scholarship has 3 awards: 1 grand prize award of $5,000.00 and 2 runner-up awards of $2,500.00. Please access the application online . Luther College has summer employment opportunities. Applications may be found in the Office of Human Resources (Main 25) or online. Applications should be completed and returned to Human Resources by March 2, 2018. Students returning to Luther for Fall 2018 are eligible to apply. The Admissions Office is hiring!  We are now accepting applications for the summer months as well as the 2018-19 academic year! Our office seeks outgoing and energetic students who love talking about Luther and sharing their experience with prospective students! Applications are available on our Admissions Application Website and  are due by Monday, February 26 at noon!
 
Luther College students Shannon Meehan, senior; Elizabeth Glennon, junior; and Anna Li Holey, senior; and alumni Laurie Adrian, '16; and Brian Gerike, '12; won second place in the undergraduate student ecology poster competition at the national meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Denver, Colorado, in November.

The Summer Student/Faculty Collaborative Research program provides opportunity for students to engage in collaborative research projects with faculty members during the two months of Luther's summer session (June/July).    Proposals are due in the Dean's Office (Union 262)  by 5:00 p.m. Monday, March 12.   Complete information and application guidelines here.
