February Chamber Coffee

hosted by

The Winfield Center is home to the Cowley College EMS and Allied Health programs. The MICT program is in its 21st year. Over 300 students have graduated the program to date. It is estimated that each medic treats over 1,000 patients each year. Director Chris Cannon will be present to speak about the program, and tours of the lab and facility will be offered.

The CNA and CMA classes taught at the Winfield Center certify over 150 students each year to work in the nursing field. Additionally, classes in phlebotomy and IV Therapy are offered at the site.

Through a cooperative partnership with Cowley College, Pratt County Community College offers LPN and ADN nursing programs at the site.

The Cowley College Criminal Justice program has begun student patrolling in Winfield recently. Director Frank Owens and some student patrol officers will be present to speak about the history of the stud ent patrol and its expansion into Winfield.

Renovations to the building are ongoing. New carpeting and landscaping were recently installed. Extensive painting and wall repairs have been completed and future plans include upgrading the nursing lab and the paramedic lab, and remodeling the bathrooms.

BIKE RACK DESIGN CONTEST INVITES YOUTH TO SUBMIT DESIGNS

In November 2015, RISE Cowley (formerly the Cowley County Healthy Communities Coalition) approved a bike rack design contest for 5 communities in Cowley County.  Inspired by the Ohio Creating Healthy Communities project, RISE Cowley strives to promote healthy choices by focusing on policies, systems and environments. Specifically, this project helps create infrastructure to support and increase biking.

A contest for youth to submit designs was held in January 2016 and winning designs were selected for Arkansas City and Winfield. A fish bike rack was installed last fall at the Winfield Public Library and a sunflower bike rack with bench will be constructed this spring for installation in Arkansas City.

The design contest is being re-issued for the communities of Burden, Dexter and Udall. The design contest invites youth, ages 5-18, and their families to create a design specific to their community. If the design is selected, RISE Cowley will pay to have it built and installed in the community.

Bike rack designs do not have to be fancy drawings - in fact simple lines are easiest to fabricate into a functional bike rack. It is suggested that the design be 6-8 feet long and suitable to secure at least 4-6 bikes. Youth can submit more than one design and they are due by March 2, 2018 to the Cowley County Extension Office, PO Box 538 Winfield or via e-mail to cowleyhealthycommunities@gmail.com.

If you are an adult with an idea for a design, find a youth in your community and partner on a submission. Funding for the fabrication and installation is from the Communities Preventing Childhood Obesity grant project previously received by RISE Cowley.

For more information, please contact Becky Reid at K-State Research and Extension Cowley County at 620.221.5450.
