Epiphanytide at Calvary
From the Rector

Dear Calvary Parishioners,

On Monday, we officially ended the season of Christmas in the church and celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany. Since we gather weekly on Monday mornings for Morning Prayer, we added a Eucharist to make for a proper major feast. Bishop Nedi Rivera, one of our 8:00 parishioners, presided at the table for the feast.

Epiphany is the day when the light of Christ was made manifest to all people. Magi came to pay homage to the Christ child, to reveal to us that Christ's light is for all people from all nations.

The Biblical history of the Epiphany is ironic this particular week. The Magi were Persians who arrived in the presence of Jesus from what is now present-day Iran. They ventured into into foreign territory to pay homage to the Christ child that the Way of Love might be known to all.

The Magi showed the way by turning toward the star they followed and encountering the Light of the World in the Christ Child.
My spiritual director asked me what my hope was for the season following the Epiphany. "How do you want to encounter Christ's light in the world?" he asked.

I found myself responding, "I want to make sure I don't get in the way of the Light. I don't want to cast shadows."

He replied back, "The key is turning away from the darkness and toward the Light. In Christ, there is no shadow." He was referencing the first chapter of 1 John.

May we together turn toward Christ, the Light of the World, in the reality of our days to come.

Blessings,
The Reverend Allison English
Rector
