VIDEO: Vista parents hear what youth wish they knew in emotional video
Kudos to the students and families at Vista del Lago High School, who helped produce an emotional, insightful video in which youth share letters expressing feelings, experiences, and more they wish their parents knew and understood about them.

It's part of the school's ongoing Challenge Success initiative to combat teen stress, anxiety, and overwhelm.

Since last year, both Vista del Lago and Folsom high schools have been implementing Challenge Success , developed by Stanford University in response to the increasing number of students
who were lacking the emotional skills and resiliency needed to be successful in school.

According to their vision statement "Challenge Success recognizes that our current fast-paced, high-pressure culture works against much of what we know about healthy child development and effective education. The overemphasis on grades, test scores, and rote answers has stressed out some kids and marginalized many more. We all want our kids to do well in school and to master certain skills and concepts, but our largely singular focus on academic achievement has resulted in a lack of attention to other components of a successful life-the ability to be independent, adaptable, ethical, and engaged critical thinkers."

VIDEO: Costumed crossing guard connects with Carl Sundahl students
A costumed crossing guard? Talk about going the extra mile to connect with kids!

Every day in October, Carl Sundahl Elementary yard supervisor Tupou McCready wore a different, elaborate costume during morning drop-off. It gave students and families something to look forward to all the way up to Halloween!

McCready said she enjoys giving her school community something positive to look forward to: "Just seeing the joy in the kids' faces, and the parents, it wakes them up, they're all excited," she said.

Parents learn latest health info on vaping, with the help of community partners
In a joint effort to share valuable information on the dangers of vaping, FCUSD joined forces with Folsom's Hope , Omni Youth Programs , Recovery Happens and the Folsom Police for a parent and public education night.

Over the course of the presentation, attendees were able to hear from experts, regarding risks and dangers of adolescent nicotine and marijuana use, and have individual questions answered.

A panel discussion concluded the evening which was staffed by health experts, a School Resource Officer, Assistant Principals from Vista del Lago and Sutter Middle School, and students from Folsom High School Bulldogs Reaching Out Club and Folsom Middle School's Club Live . Parents and students are encouraged to stay informed and have ongoing, open discussions on making healthy choices. Students are invited to become involved in any of the youth programs we endorse that promote tobacco education and prevention.

Health Education parent feedback - we want to hear from you!
Last spring the State Board of Education adopted a new Health Framework which elicited questions and concerns from our parents, specifically as it addressed sexual education. In response, and to gain a better understanding from our community, we distributed a survey to gather parent questions and concerns.

Results from that survey helped us create an informational website regarding FCUSD Health Education . We also went out to our schools, and conducted Parent Health Forums at each of our elementary school sites throughout September and October. At these, we shared information on the difference between the Health Framework, the California Healthy Youth Act (the law) and our current curriculum. We also gathered parent input to advise leadership on parent comments, questions and concerns.

As promised we are reflecting on this process and asking if you will participate in a survey so we can gather your comments. We want to know how well we addressed your concerns and provide another opportunity for you to share your voice on this very important matter.

Please let us know your thoughts here: Parent Feedback Survey Thank you!

IN THE NEWS: Mitchell students lead Give Back Share a Snack Drive
Good Day Sacramento visited Mitchell Middle School's WEB ("Where Everyone Belongs") students who organized a service learning project benefiting those still affected by last year's Camp Fire.

The Give Back Share a Snack Drive is supported by the school's WEB leaders Jessica Bailey and Chelsea Gaynor. Students are collecting donations of snack food items like granola bars, chips, crackers, and fruit snacks are being collected through December 13 .  The donations will be delivered to the Hope Center in Oroville, where goodie bags will be put together and distributed throughout Butte County to kids and teens who are still recovering from the tragic events of last fall.

Reily Roe, an eighth-grade WEB leader involved in this project says that, "As an IB (International Baccalaureate) school, we care about this project because it's an opportunity to do something that really matters and can make a lot of people's lives slightly better."

Anyone looking to support the cause can bring snack donations to the Mitchell Middle School office between now and Dec. 13.

Theodore Judah students compete in First Lego League contest
Students from Theodore Judah Elementary competed in the First Lego League (FLL) FLL is an exciting and fun global robotics program that ignites an enthusiasm for discovery, science, and technology in kids ages 9 to 14.

Each Qualifying Tournament (QT) hosts a maximum of 16 teams to select top scoring teams to the Northern California Regional Tournament in December. FLL was initially introduced onto Theodore Judah's campus by teacher Maggie Itkoff.

This Season's Theme:  City Shapers
2019 City Shapers is about finding a problem that relates to building a future city and how using engineering process to solve them.  For example, our Rockin' Robots #32932  (Evelyn Ma, Ananya Purohit, Srija Golconda, Caleb Zhang, Archan Bhatt, and Abhignya Sudam) chose to conduct research on biogas to reduce air pollution and plug into the existing infrastructure.

The team's field research journey took the fifth-graders from Theodore Judah to:
  1. (virtually) to Blue Spruce Farms in Vermont through video Q&A
  2. (physically) to the UC Davis Dairy Barn, New Hope Dairy in Galt, and Amazon Sacramento
  3. engage & host Q&A with the Folsom City Manager, Elaine Andersen for over 12 Nor Cal regional FLL teams and
  4. present to an energy expert for SMUD of Sacramento
F our  of the seven  teams from Theodore Judah advanced to the Regional Tournament!  Let's take a moment to celebrate and acknowledge all seven  teams' amazing journey and applied learning from classrooms to field and at such a young age!
