Highlights: Gun Buy-Back Results, Active Shooter Response Class, CalTrans Begins Hwy 1 Repaving Project, "Get Us Moving" Survey for Transportation Funding
Connect With Pacifica This Week
Greetings!

I have a variety of updates to highlight this week. First, I’m happy to report the May 5th Pacifica/Daly City/Colma gun buyback event held in Daly City ran very smoothly and resulted in volunteer buybacks of 207 guns. Meanwhile, the event in San Mateo County for cities around there resulted in buybacks of 426 guns. Second, the Pacifica Police Department is continuing to offer Public Active Shooter Response classes; due to high demand, the next one is on Wednesday, June 6 at 6:00 p.m., at Terra Nova High School Theatre to accommodate higher attendance, details below. Also, if you haven’t already, please sign up for the San Mateo County Alert system on your mobile device to get alerts about emergencies, sign-up details below.

Switching gears to a different subject, you’ll notice Caltrans mobilizing along Hwy 1 to begin the Hwy 1 paving project, nighttime work. There will be numerous changeable message signs throughout town along Hwy 1. Here’s the Caltrans press release . Also, another reminder to please take a minute to take the County’s “Get Us Moving” survey to provide your input about how you think future potential county-wide sales tax money (not approved yet, but could be on November 2018 ballot) should be prioritized for roadway and transit improvements.

Please let me know if you have comments or questions, and  thank you  for wanting to  Connect with Pacifica !

Sincerely,
KEVIN WOODHOUSE
City Manager

  • Youth Volunteer Opportunities - Leaders In Training Education and Swimmer Aides
  1. Leaders in Training Education (LITE): The Leaders in Training Education (LITE) program is a program designed to give youth ages 13-17 the opportunity to volunteer their time working at special events and youth programs sponsored by the Parks, Beaches & Recreation department. With the help of the PB&R staff, the LITEs are exposed to experiences to learn leadership roles, job training, become involved with their community and earn community service hours. The hope is that this experience will bridge the gap between volunteerism and first time jobs for participants. The application deadline for LITE applications has been extended to June 1. Please contact Sydney Bliss, recreation coordinator, at 738-7376. An application and more information can be found here.
  2. Swimmer Aides: A swimmer aide is interested in working with children, volunteering of their time and learning how to teach swimming. Swimmer aides must be 11-17 years of age and possess American Red Cross intermediate level skills or better. We are now accepting applications for our Swimmer Aide program. These applications are due by Wednesday, June 13. Pick up or turn in applications at either the Jean Brink Pool at Oceana High School or the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Office at 1810 Francisco Blvd.

  • To All Loyal Pool Patrons - We would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the confusion on Saturday, May 5th for the recreation swim time at the pool. Due to a school district swim meet we were not able to be open to the public. Although we posted this closure in many locations, we fell short of using all social media at our disposal. If you dropped your children off at the pool or tried to swim yourself during the recreation time, we would like to offer you a free pass for recreation swim. Please contact the pool at (650) 738-7461 or stop by to pick up your pass. Thank you for your continued patronage. – City of Pacifica Parks, Beaches & Recreation Dept.
