From my first Sunday, through to Holy Week and Easter, the All-Church-Retreat, and now my Installation Service — it’s been a busy season, and I am excited for the chance, with summer coming, to have some time to reflect, plan, and, most importantly, continue getting to know you all in the congregation of UPC.
To that end, I’d like to extend to you an invitation. A series of get-to-know-you conversations has been organized over the course of the summer, chances for all of you to come and spend some time hearing from me and sharing with me a bit about yourselves and about the life of the church. Some of them will be hosted at the church on Sunday mornings, some mid-week, and some in church member’s homes around Austin.
If you’re interested in having some time to chat and reflect, and to break bread with other members of your church family, I hope you’ll sign up for one of these conversations. Each one has a limited number of slots, but if we run out of space, we’ll start scheduling more, into the fall. We want to make sure that everybody who wants to come has a chance!
Sign up began last Sunday, May 14. This Sunday, we will continue sign-ups until all spaces are filled. I’m so looking forward to this chance. It’s one thing to shake hands at the door after worship on Sunday, but of course it’s entirely another to have the time to share stories, to share hopes and dreams, and to share time with one another, and I hope to have the chance to do so with all of you over the coming months.

Please Support Katie
UPC’s Own YAV!
|
The Young Adult Volunteer program of PC(USA) is a one year service opportunity for young adults from 19 to 30 years. YAVs live in intentional Christian community, deepening and developing their faith while serving alongside partners in sites across the United States and around the world. YAVs serve for one academic year, August—July, as they explore God’s calling in their lives.
Volunteers are placed in community agencies or local churches, with jobs depending on the needs of partners and the skills of the Young Adult Volunteer. YAVs are exposed to some of the hardest problems in the world—poverty, violence and reconciliation, and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ—while living and reflecting with other volunteers on the meaning and motivation of their Christian faith.
Katie Henderson, an active member of UKirk at UPC, graduates from UT this month. In August, Katie will begin her year as a YAV, serving in Glasgow, Scotland. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), supporting congregations and presbytery, and some placement agencies share funding YAVs. All volunteers are required to raise some of their financial support.
