President's Letter 
   
 

The conference is less than six weeks away. I hope you have  registered for the conference and are as excited as I am to connect in person with both old and new friends.  As the weather warms and we start to spill outside to enjoy the sunshine, take a moment to curl up and read this pertinent collection of articles curated from past JMLE issues, all relevant to our conference theme, Engaging Citizens, Building Community .  

Leadership Council member Evelien Schilder put together the list and Student Leadership Council member Catherine Burgess took this list and created a ton of social media posts to help spread the great work that is part of our journal .  

Don't wait to the last minute to make a plan as to which conference sessions you'll want to attend in June.  You can review the full schedule and program descriptions here .  With seven strands to choose from over 3 days of content with a variety of styles from presentations, debates, panels and hands-on workshops, this year's conference is going to be the best yet.  Can I just say WOW, HIGH FIVE and BIG THANK YOU to the conference leadership team -- Tony Streit , Benjamin Thevenin , Michelle Ciulla Lipkin, and MJ Robinson . With a team of volunteers from the Board, Leadership Council and Student Leadership Council, they have been working hard on all aspects of conference planning. I've been privy to all the plans and think you are in for a treat. I can't thank enough the many people who are helping to put on this conference. It takes a village to pull off a "big tent" national conference of this magnitude with the depth and breadth that covers media literacy.

Whether it is the JMLE or the conference, this type of engagement and collaboration is exemplary of the work of our community.  I'm amazed and thankful every day for each of you that serves and commits to media literacy education. It makes me hopeful for the next generation who will lead.

The Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Summer School 2017 is currently seeking proposals for poster sessions and workshops. The main themes under which the topics fall are: reforming and transforming education; innovation in journalism; communication research; new competences and social media; and news literacy and political participation. Doctoral researchers working on relevant topics are invited to participate.

CFP: CERCLL Sixth International Conference 
on the Development and Assessment of Intercultural Competence
The Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language, and Literacy is now accepting proposals for their Sixth International Conference on the Development and Assessment of Intercultural Competence. The conference will feature presentations and workshops that consider intercultural competence in connection with global trends of migration, travel, and digitally-enabled mobility. Of particular interest are contributions that address the changing state of intercultural competence in a mobile world.

CFS: Film Your Research Video Contest
This contest is an effort to get scientists connected with the concept of "visual science" by making a 2-minute video featuring yourself or a lab member performing a scientific experiment or technique in the lab or in the field.
