Minister's Musings...

"Affirmation"
by Anthony de Mello

A woman in great distress over
the death of her son came to
the Master for comfort.

He listened to her patiently
while she poured out her
tale of woe.

Then he said softly,
"I  cannot wipe away your tears,
my dear. I can only teach
you how to make them holy."

After the devastating loss of my 26-year old daughter to murder in November of 2004, I was forced to navigate a journey through the unknown.

My grief counselor said, "Welcome to hell. There is no way out, but I am here to help guide your way."

Anthony de Mello's master says, "I cannot wipe away your tears, but I can teach you how to make them holy."

This Sunday, I'll share what I have learned about resilience, forgiveness, and hope.

In faith, Rev. Cathy

Sunday Service
November 10 - 10:30 AM - "After Leslie ~ Variations on Love"
Rev. Cathy Harrington, Hal Gurian , c oordinator

UU minister and poet, Nancy Shaffer, wrote a meaningful poem about hope for Rev. Cathy after the loss of her daughter, Leslie. It is called, After Leslie; Variations on Love. The poem invites a series of questions.

The question is how to enter grief
and be torn into nothing
and yet be whole.
How to look into the abyss
and choose to turn.
The question -- always the question is -- what does love do now?

Children  & Youth  Religious Education
Nursery care is available for infants through age 4
C hildren and Youth are asked to stay in the sanctuary with their family
until after the Children's Benediction

Last Sunday in RE we continued our study of Judaism, learning how the question, "Where do we come from?" is answered in the Torah. The children had fun learning about the Judeo Christian creation story by building the world out of Duplo blocks as it was described in Genesis, then by individually illustrating how they would create the world over seven days. We briefly looked at various creation stories, including the scientific explanation for the origin of the universe, and emphasized that all are equally valid.

This Sunday we will learn about some important Jewish traditions.

Volunteer!
UUCGT will be providing the volunteers at Safe Harbor from the evening of Saturday, November 16 through the morning of Saturday, November 23.  We will have a sign up table in the Gathering Space this Sunday.  We only have three slots left for our four days, but we may need to help our Humanist and Pagan friends fill in a few spots on Wednesday and Friday.

Stop by and see us at the sign-up table and participate in a hands-on ministry to those experiencing homelessness in our community.

There will also be a brief training session on Sunday, November 10 at 12 noon for volunteers who have not availed themselves of the other training options.

For more information contact Mike or Sandra McDonald (231)935-3759.

DNA collection could become a normal form of government surveillance - for all of us - if the DOJ moves forward with its plans. Through this new policy, the government will vastly expand its law enforcement DNA database, giving it access to powerful information about the population at large.  Act now: Submit your public comment against forced DNA collection. The DOJ is accepting comments until Nov. 12 - so your comment could be the difference it takes to stop this proposed rule.
