GLW Welcomes Ho-Chunk for All-School Assembly
On November 5, Gordon L. Willson Elementary welcomed members of the Ho-Chunk Nation for an all-school presentation.

The Ho-Chunk talked about their culture, explaining different aspects of Ho-Chunk regalia, including the symbolism of using eagle feathers and the process of making deer hide clothing and intricate beadwork. Students learned that bear claws and porcupine quills were also used in traditional regalia.

Next, students learned about the different types of Ho-Chunk dances and saw demonstrations both by the Ho-Chunk guests and their very own classmates! Ho-Chunk students were invited to dance with the guests while fellow students cheered them on, then invited more student volunteers to join. The fun culminated when GLW teachers were asked to join the drum circle and the Ho-Chunk dancers!

Ariana Macias Featured as Senior Spotlight
"I am nominating Ariana Macias for senior spotlight. This is the fourth year I have had the opportunity to coach Ari as a varsity cheerleader, she is a wonderful role model, leader, friend and athlete and has been an irreplaceable member of our team. Not only is she an incredible athlete she is also an incredible student. She has a 3.6 GPA, and is involved in a plethora of extra curricular activities including Student Council, FBLA, chamber Choir, musicals and interact. I often wonder how she has enough time in the day to accomplish and excel at all of the things that she does. She is an example of a model student and has more Thunderbird Pride than anyone I know."
- Nominated by Morgan Carroll

4K Students Engage in Author Study!
Ms. Amanda Okello's 4K students at Children's Day Center have spent the week engaging in an author study of Byron Barton. They have been introduced to "author" and "illustrator" as vocabulary words, discussed the parts of a car after reading the book  My Carand made predictions of where a child may be traveling to after reading the book  Airport

The students' hands-on learning was on display after reading the book  Dinosaurs, DinosaursOur students built their own dinosaurs with play-doh, designed their own dinosaurs with snap-together toys, and created their own habitat for dinosaurs with kinetic sand, rocks and other materials in their sensory table.

East Students Engage In STEM Activities
Last week Mrs. Martin's fifth grade class began using STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) bins in the classroom as a learning extension and indoor recess activity.

Students used a variety of building materials including base ten blocks, wooden cubes, magnet tiles, dominoes and pattern blocks to complete building challenges and activities. Students have enjoyed generating multiple solutions to specific structural problems, such as building a bridge that can hold weight, and applying their abilities to think divergently and inventively.

They look forward to continuing to use these STEM bins in the classroom as a fun, educational challenge.

What's Happening at West?
What's happening at West? A lot! Our youngest learners are hard at work, from writer's workshop to polydrons to guest readers, these students' days are packed full of fun and educational experiences.
New Medical Service Being offered at Baraboo School District
The School District of Baraboo is partnering with Dr. Karen Ailsworth, MD, who is a board-certified pediatrician and has a special interest in pediatric mental health.

Dr. Ailsworth will be offering clinic visits at Baraboo High School and Jack Young Middle School  every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students who are needing assistance with issues such as ADHD, depression and anxiety. The benefit is that your student will not need to leave the school for an appointment. (Parents will need to attend the 1st appointment with student to sign paperwork and consents.)  Visits will include a medical evaluation and possible prescription assistance. She strives to make her health care affordable -- Dr. Ailsworth's clinical model is based on Direct Primary Care. She does not accept insurance -- ask about sliding scale payments. This greatly reduces cost, as well as interference in your health by third parties.

If you would like to make an appointment, please contact Dr. Ailsworth directly at 608-352-3233  or one of the school nurses.

Karen Ailsworth, MD Bio Dr. Ailsworth has a holistic approach: She believes environment, school, and family all have a role in maximizing mental and emotional well-being of children and youth. She states, "I am excited about working in the Baraboo High School because of the proximity of school staff, which will make communication with school staff and students easier. I work in the same part of the building as student services, so we really can work as a team".  Dr. Ailsworth has two children and a husband.
NF Teacher Joins Scholastic Teacher Advisors in NYC
After being selected as a Scholastic Teacher Advisor earlier this year and traveling to New York in March, North Freedom 5th grade teacher Mrs. Shafer expected the rest of her work with Scholastic to be long distance. But on November 1st, she was on an airplane again and headed to Scholastic headquarters for another day of amazing opportunities. Mrs. Shafer and the other advisors were able to meet with Judy Newman, president of Scholastic Book Clubs, to discuss a new reward program for families. This meeting was followed by a conversation with CEO Dick Robinson, lunch in the newly renovated Clifford's Cafe, and a quick photoshoot on the rooftop of the building. To top off this incredible weekend, Mrs. Shafer was able to join the other advisors in cheering on one of their members as she completed the New York City Marathon.

JYMS Students Dissect Science Fiction
Seventh grade students at Jack Young Middle School have started a science fiction literature circle unit. They are reading amazing books like The Hunger Games, Divergent, Among the Hidden, Ender's Game, and The House of the Scorpion.

On October 31 and November 1, students had a chance to become doctors and perform a character autopsy to peel back the layers of the character they are meeting in their books.

The 7th grade Language Arts team had students create "character auto psies" based on their science fiction literature circle books. Students were able to get into the activity by wearing gloves and putting on name tags that introduced them as doctors. Students drew their character and then "dissected" the character to figure out what their hopes and dreams were.

Students talked about what the characters often hold in their hands, as well as metaphorically hold on to and keep close to them. We talked about character's perspective and how they view the world from their eyes. Our "doctors" did a great job diving deeper into their books!

East Welcomes Mayor Palm
The Mayor of Baraboo, Mr. Mike Palm, visited Mrs. Helbing's 3rd graders at East School to talk about all things Baraboo! He is one of our Baraboo Classroom Community Connections, and it is so much fun to learn from him. The kids were amazed to hear about all of the things that the City of Baraboo is in charge of doing for us, and had fun asking Mayor Palm all sorts of questions. Thanks for visiting!

Baraboo School Board member Doug Mering was honored with the Rural Advocacy Award by the Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance (WiRSA), a non-profit organization dedicated to helping address challenges faced by rural school districts, at the annual Rural Schools Conference on October 28, 2019.

The Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance was formed to help rural school districts address the unique issues that affect rural schools as they seek to achieve the highest quality education for e very student. Members include a cross-section of administrators, educators, school board members, post-secondary representatives, rural community members, business leaders, and other concerned individuals who want a strong voice for rural education.

Being recognized as a freshman and first timer is a massive achievement!

West Awards Students for BEE-ing Great!
The West Kindergarten Center continues to reinforce positive student behavior with students in different ways each day. We recognize Braxton Grefe, Livia Meyer and Jessie Wells for last week's BEE Great Award at West. These students have truly exemplified the West Cool Tools of "Being Respectful, Being Responsible, and Being Safe."

Each week, West staff will continue to recognize a different student from each classroom for this awesome recognition. Thank you to our families for all of their continued positive support at West.
4K Students Celebrate Fall
Ms. Funfsinn's afternoon 4K class at East Elementary School celebrated the beginning of fall with a Fall Party. The class explored the scientific properties of pumpkin slime, practiced early math skills while sorting their snack, crafted some cool bat hats and played other fall-themed games!

GLW Book Drive Brings in 600+ Books
Gordon L. Willson Elementary's fall book drive brought in more than 600 books from the gracious GLW community; nearly 200 of these books were chapter books and more than 400 picture books were received.

Each book received is put directly back into the hands of students. GLW reading specialists have identified students whose at-home libraries could use a boost. In addition, there are bookshelves outside the GLW reading specialist nook; teachers identify additional children who may not have as much access to texts and those students are also allowed to select books.

Thank you to all who donated!
