Join us Wednesday for the Golden Mayor's Community Celebration

Mayors Award Crowd
Join Golden Mayor Marjorie Sloan for the Mayor's Community Celebration this Wednesday!

This free event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30 at the Student Center on the Colorado School of Mines campus.

Join the Mayor in recognizing Goldenites who have contributed greatly to making a difference in the community. Following the presentation of the awards, we are pleased to introduce Dr. Martín Carcasson as the evening's keynote speaker.

Martín Carcasson, Ph.D., is a professor in the Communication Studies department of Colorado State University (CSU), and the founder and director of the CSU Center for Public Deliberation (CPD). Dr. Carcasson's research focuses on helping local communities address "wicked problems" more productively through improved public communication, community problem solving, and collaborative decision-making. The CPD is a practical, applied extension of his work, and functions as an impartial resource dedicated to enhancing local democracy in Northern Colorado. Dr. Carcasson and his staff train students to serve as impartial facilitators, who then work with local governments, school boards, and community organizations to design, facilitate, and report on innovative projects and events on key community issues.

Dr. Carcasson will talk about how conversations between neighbors, and strong community dedication to deliberate engagement, can result in respectful and collaborative community results.

There is no need to RSVP for this free event. Simply come and celebrate the contributions of members of the Golden community!
Trick-or-Treat Street on Washington

Trick or Treat Street
Got a little superhero with no candy to rescue this Halloween?

Bring your mini masked monsters to Washington Avenue in downtown Golden this Thursday starting at 3:30 p.m. for safe and fun trick-or-treating. This is a special event for our local Golden families! Washington will be blocked off to traffic while participating merchants dole out the sweets.

It's a safe and fun way to ensure your little ones have a blast in costume while collecting a bag full of goodies that you can feel good about as well.
Leave your carts out an extra day this week

snowy trash cans
With the winter storm continuing to blanket the Front Range, travel out there is dicey. Alpine has reported some weather-related delays today, including most of the alleys in Golden, the Goldco Circle area, and 4th, 5th, Cheyenne, and Illinois Streets. Alpine asks that this week (and anytime it snows), folks leave their carts out an extra day, even after the weather has cleared.

Crews will do their best to catch up, but one day full of delays will cause a ripple effect for the whole week. If your trash isn't collected on your scheduled day this week, chances are, it will be picked up the following day.

Thanks for your patience!
You get the sidewalks and we'll take care of the streets!

Snow Plows working hard
It's not even Halloween yet, and it's already looking like Christmas! With so many little trick-or-treaters getting their costumes and treat bags ready to go, it's especially important we have the sidewalks cleared following this storm's snowfall. You wouldn't want to be the one who gets between a kid and his or her candy! And besides, clearing the sidewalks is the law.

While the City of Golden's Public Works Streets Division is working hard to ensure that residents and commuters can safely navigate the city's 242 lane miles they're in charge of plowing, we also need your help; we need you to shovel your sidewalk.

City Municipal Code 11.08.140 requires any owner or occupant of residential properties to remove any accumulation of snow more than one inch no later than 24-hours after the snowfall stops. Snow and ice of an inch or more must be removed from sidewalks abutting commercial properties within 12 hours after snow stops. Citizens are asked not to shovel the snow into the streets, but instead into your yard or other landscaping. To report a sidewalk that has not been cleared a day or more after a snowstorm, call the Golden Police Department at 303-384-8045.

When snowplows come through, they leave what is called a "wind row" (hill or pile) of snow in the path along the curb, including in front of driveways. While snowplow operators do their best not to "plow you in," it's inevitable that it will happen sometimes. It is recommended that if possible, citizens wait to shovel their driveways and sidewalks until after the plow has come through. By waiting, you will not have to re-shovel to get out of your driveway.

Head over to Guiding Golden www.guidinggolden.com/prioritizing-sustainability-initiatives and take our survey Your input will be used to prioritize and inform recommendations of new programs by the Community Sustainability Advisory Board and will also be used to update the City of Golden Sustainability Strategic Plan. Designated Mountain Bike Only Trail at Dakota Ridge South

After conducting a one-year pilot program on the newly constructed Dakota Ridge South Trail at Matthews/Winters Park, Jeffco Open Space is officially designating the .8 mile section of Dakota Ridge South Trail as mountain bike only, as of November 1.

The 2018 Jeffco Resident Survey reflected that 75% of respondents were in favor of designating trails for a single type of use. In addition, the 2014-2019 JCOS Master Plan identifies the objective to evaluate different management types on existing trails. Considering these factors, along with additional considerations, JCOS decided to implement a pilot program to evaluate designated use trails.

The pilot program evaluated the challenges and benefits associated with designated use trails. During this time, Jeffco Open Space collected data, conducted surveys with all visitor types, and solicited feedback about visitors' overall experience on the trail.

Approximately 80% of all visitors surveyed were satisfied or in favor of the designation for the Dakota Ridge South Trail. Jeffco Open Space also collaborated with the regional mountain bike community, who provided valuable insight and feedback. Based on this data and positive comments collected from visitors, Jeffco Open Space made the decision to make the designation permanent.

Dakota Ridge South Trail will go from a pilot program to a mountain bike only designation on November 1 and will be signed to reflect this change.

To learn more about designated use trails in Jeffco Open Space parks, visit www.jeffco.us/3817/Designated-Use.
Current Projects
Crews work late to repair faulty water main pipe

Corroded holes in water main
Yesterday, a contractor doing work for the Colorado School of Mines at 13th Street and Maple Street inadvertently jiggled a water main line that appears to have been badly corroded and began to leak.

Golden Public Works crews jumped into action to repair the line, uncovering another fault in the line in the process. The work caused local water outages and traffic delays, but the water main was finally fixed about 12:30 a.m.

A big shout-out to the brave workers who endured the cold last night to restore water to the neighborhood, and a thanks to the neighbors in the area as well who tolerated the water outage with patience as crews took care of the problem.
2019 Concrete Replacement Program

This week, depending on the weather, Fasick Concrete will begin work on the intersection of 17th Street and Washington Avenue. Work will consist of modifying all four corners of the intersection to improve the pedestrian crossing.

Weather dependent, the work is anticipated to take two weeks. There will be no detour in place for the duration. Work will take place under single lane closures with flaggers.

Please contact John Hardy (303) 384-8195 if you have any questions.
2019 Utility Replacement

Sewer main construction at 9th and Maple Streets to 8th Street is completed, and concrete and asphalt repairs are scheduled, all weather permitting.

Seeding at the CSM survey field and some concrete repairs on Johnson Road still need to be completed on the water main replacements in those areas.

Please contact Les Major at 303-384-8170 with any questions.
