Fundraising News

What will YOUR new habit be?

The Safeway eScrip program raises a lot of money for Acalanes, but their program no longer supports credit cards, so choose your NEW OPTION at Safeway:

1)     Use your debit card

2)     Want those airline miles?  Buy yourself a gift card with your credit card.

Credit cards can still be used for eScrip shopping at other local businesses and restaurants.

Visit www.escrip.com to sign up (designate Acalanes High School/Group ID 140807571) or update your Safeway, debit, and credit cards. Participating merchants contribute a % of your purchases to APC when you shop with registered cards.

eScrip is a valuable fundraising tool - at no extra cost to you!

Questions? Contact APC eScrip Coordinator, Wendy Gilberd, [email protected]

AHS Counseling Notes

Counselors will be meeting with  juniors and sophomores  individually throughout the spring.

Using Aeries Pass

https://pass.acalanes.k12.ca.us  is the link to Aeries, which is the official school record. School Loop has day-to-day things like homework.  Students and parents can use Aeries pass not only for course selection but at any time for things like printing out an unofficial transcript.  The user name is the student's 7 digit ID (200xxxx for most Acalanes students) and the student's network password, which they were issued on Dons Day.

Summer  School:

District summer school information is now posted online.  Registration will start February 17, 2015http://www.acalanes.k12.ca.us/summerschool

Students who earned a D or an F in a required class should sign up for summer school.

Seniors: Financial Aid:  March 2 is the priority deadline for completing the FAFSA for financial aid.

Seniors planning to attend DVC:

There are evening information meetings at DVC for prospective  students and parents http://www.dvc.edu/enrollment/a-and-r/school-relations/workshops.html

Students  planning to attend DVC need to take math and English placement tests.  Those tests will be given at Acalanes 7th period March 4.  If you can't make that time, then you can schedule time to take the tests at DVC at the Assessment Center http://www.dvc.edu/assessment

Students with disabilities should contact the DVC Disabilities Support Services office http://www.dvc.edu/dss/ for information and to schedule assessments.

Juniors:   Remember to sign up for the SAT or ACT.   Spring of junior year is a good time to take the SAT or ACT, but you must sign up with the testing company directly.  Acalanes is a test center for the SAT for the May and June dates.  Register early to increase your chances of getting the test center  of your choice.   Sign up on www.CollegeBoard.org for the SAT and at www.actstudent.org for the ACT.

CAHSEE make-up testing date.   March 17  and March 18 are the make-up dates for those who did not take the  California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).  The English portion is on March 17 and math is on March 18.  Sophomores who were absent on the testing days in February as well as juniors and seniors who still need to pass one or both sections will be tested.  Testing coordinator Hannah Welling will be contacting students who need to test in March.   If you have questions about test dates and times, contact Hannah Welling at [email protected]

Parent Ed

Parent Ed is Excited to Have Rosalind Wiseman Coming to Town!

We, as a parent community, are very fortunate to have Rosalind Wiseman coming to speak to us about creating cultures of dignity. In her numerous books, Wiseman has explored the tween and teen cultures of boys and girls, addressed bullying, and tried to empower teens and their parents to successfully navigate it all. You may be familiar with her 2003 book Queen Bees & Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends & Other Realities of Adolescence, (2003), but Wiseman has published numerous books in the ensuing twelve years. Below is a complete list of additional titles:

  • Queen Bee Moms & King Pin Dads: Dealing with the Parents, Teachers, Coaches, and Counselors Who Can Make-or Break-Your Child's Future, (2006),
  •
  • Owning Up Curriculum: Empowering Adolescents to Confront Social Cruelty, Bullying, and Injustice, (2009),
  •
  • Queen Bees & Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and the New Realities of Girl World, (2009),
  •
  • Boys, Girls & Other Hazardous Materials, (2010),
  •
  • Masterminds and Wingmen: Helping Our Boys Cope with Schoolyard Power, Locker-Room Tests, Girlfriends, and the New Rules of Boy World, (2013),
  •
  • The Guide: Managing Douchebags, Recruiting Wingmen, and Attracting Who You Want", (2013),

Wiseman also maintains a very active Blog where, amongst other things, parents can find articles she has written on such diverse subject matter as "The Downside of Dress Codes" and "Talking to Your Kids About Michael Brown." http://rosalindwiseman.com/discussion/rosalinds-articles/page/2/

Hope to see you on February 25 to hear Rosalind Wiseman! 7:00-8:30pm at Stanley Middle School Library.

Why Teens Aren't Getting Enough Sleep and What We can do to help:

There are a couple of major factors that contribute to so many teens (more than 80 percent) not getting the amount of sleep their bodies require to avoid a host of negative health, cognitive, emotional  and safety impacts. First, during puberty, the teen's circadian rhythm changes so that the hormone that triggers a feeling of sleepiness is released two hours later. So, teens go from feeling ready to go to sleep at around 9:00 to feeling ready to go to sleep around 11:00. However, the time at which teens must get up to begin their day does not correspondingly move later. The other major factor contributing to teen sleeplessness is the tremendous demand on their time. Many students have difficulty fitting their extracurricular activities, homework, family, social and screen time into the hours between school and a bedtime that would enable them to get the recommended amount of sleep.

A recent article in UCLA Health recommends that parents help teens make choices about their time to balance the various demands of school, work, clubs, sports, family, and friends. It states that parents should help their teen choose what may need to be eliminated and help their teen to see sleep as a priority that will bring them tremendous benefits. Here are some tips they offer for getting your teen a better night sleep:

1  Create a calm atmosphere in the home at bedtime.

2  Teens should have a regular, relaxing routine just before bedtime

3  Avoid computer games, action movies, intense reading or heavy studying late in the evening.

4  They should not have anything with caffeine after 4:00 pm.

5  A regular exercise routine and a healthy diet

6  Keep the lights dim in the evening. Open the curtains or blinds to let in bright light in the morning. This helps keep their body clocks set at the right time.

7  If they must take a nap, they should keep it to under an hour.

8  If your teen sleeps later on the weekends, they should not sleep more than two hours later than on weekdays.

FROM THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE:

As a courtesy, our auto dialer calls home each day for tardies and absences for that day.  This is to remind you, that if you have not yet called the attendance recorder for an all-day absence or late arrival, to do so at that time. The recorder (280-3973) is available 24 hours. If your student feels they were marked absent by their teacher in error, they should come to the office the following day to pick up a correction slip to have their teacher sign off. Absences not cleared after 48 hours are changed to cuts.
