Social Equity Engagement geo-Data Scholars (SEEDS)
, presented their summer internship projects at Esri on November 25, 2019. During the summer months, each SEED scholar worked with a non-profit organization to improve upon an aspect of the agency’s program and service deliveries utilizing the City of Los Angeles’ open data portal, GeoHub. The packed audience included Esri president, Jack Dangermond, chief scientist, Dawn Wright, and various Esri employees - some of whom were authors of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications used by the students.
The scholars shared their takeaways from their internship experience such as a deepened understanding of the challenges faced in the non-profit sector, the complex nature of societal problems, and an appreciation of their expanded knowledge of GIS.
Dean Scott-Johnson, Associate Dean Ye, some faculty and staff accompanied the students on the excursion. The Cal State LA team were treated to a tour of the Esri campus and presentations on the tips and tricks when using Esri’s applications (GIS, ArcGIS, Story Maps).

Change-makers! Past and Present in Western History

The opening night reception for the curated photography exhibit, “Change-makers! Past and Present in Western History” was held on November 21, 2019 at the University Library. The exhibit, curated by
Dawn Dennis
(history) and her HIST 2020 class, highlights individuals who have been intentional in their impact on the community as defined by connections through culture, language, history, religion, common interests, and values.

Latin American Studies in Los Angeles Gathering
|
|
The first meeting of faculty who teach Latin American Studies and Latin American related courses at local community colleges and California State University (CSU) campuses was held on Friday, November 15, 2019 at Cal State LA. Topics discussed at the gathering included pedagogical approaches to Latin American Studies, mentorship, community engagement, funding, and cross-campus collaboration.

Cal State LA Model United Nations
|
|
The Cal State LA Model United Nations delegation participated in the National Model United Nations conference held in Washington D.C. representing two countries: Mexico and Venezuela. The delegation was awarded Outstanding Delegation for its representation of Mexico and Distinguished Delegation for its representation of Venezuela. Three students,

Ana Alfaro
and
Alexander Morales,
were awarded Outstanding Position Paper while Garcia was awarded Outstanding Delegate in Committee by his conference peers.
Out of the 62 universities in attendance, Cal State LA was one of 10 awarded Outstanding Delegation and one of 20 awarded Distinguished Delegation.

Vera Campbell Promise Scholarship Recipient Presentations
|
|
Three scholarship recipients of the Vera Campbell Promise Scholarship presented their summer research projects to an audience of community and business leaders, faculty and other local-area notables in the field of anthropology. Through the scholarship, the students received funding to join the
Institute for Field Research
schools in Mexico and Portugal for hands-on experience in the field, and to foster potential transnational partnerships. The students described their experiences as transformative – both personally and professionally.

MMUF Western Regional Conference
|
|
The Mellon Mays fellows attended the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Regional Conference at the University of Washington and Heritage University on the Yakima Reservation. Each year, students from various MMUF programs throughout the western region of the United States gather to present their research, attend workshops on applying for Ph.D. programs, and network with other fellows. The MMUF Western Region includes the California State University Consortium, Stanford University, the Claremont colleges, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Riverside, University of New Mexico, Whittier College, Heritage University, and Cal Tech. The conference was held from October 24-27, 2019.

Social Impact Career Connector

The Civic and Social Innovation Group (CaSIG) held its
Social Impact Career Connector
for students interested in a career with social impact. More than 20 community organizations attended to recruit students for volunteer, internship, or full time positions.

Congratulations to the Chemistry and Biochemistry club for their outstanding work and effort during National Chemistry Week. The club organized activities for local elementary and middle school students which included tours of Professor Cohen’s lab and the greenhouse.

The College of Natural and Social Sciences invites graduate students to apply for the “Train to Teach” Learning Community in Spring 2020. The focus of this Learning Community, the
inaugural
professional development for NSS graduate students, will
- center on best practices in teaching;
- bring together an interdisciplinary group of graduate students to discuss teaching/learning experiences and practices in a supportive setting;
- explore teaching career interests and learn about teaching innovations and best practices, and deepen the understanding of pedagogy.

(anthropology) worked with a group of judges, lawyers, and professors from around the world at Trinity College at Oxford University on a Collaborative Learning Workshop on cultural expertise.
The Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley invited
ChorSwang Ngin
(anthropology) to give a lecture on “Cultural Expertise on Southeast Asia and Asylum Expert Witnessing.”
Henry D. Schlinger
(psychology) was awarded the Exceptional Levels of Service to Students grant.
Ji Yun Son
(psychology) was interviewed for an NPR article on new teaching approaches that emphasize real-world applications in college-level statistics courses.

Elaine Draper
(sociology) published a review on the promise and failure of U.S. workplace protections for immigrant workers in a special issue of ILR Review on the impact of immigrant legalization initiatives and international perspectives on immigration and the world of work. She chaired and presented in New York the Distinguished Article Award in the Sociology of Law for the American Sociological Association. ASA also appointed her to the Public Understanding of Sociology Award, Donald Light Award for the Public Practice of Medical Sociology, and Marvin Olsen Student Paper Award in Environment and Technology committees that selected the recipients of these awards. She was appointed to the State Bar of California Advisory Council for the Pathway to Law School Program and received the University-wide Exceptional Service to Students Award from Cal State L.A.
