Brothers in Art : An Exhibition in Diversity, Unity, Love.
November 8th to December 7th 2019

This exhibition's title,
Brothers In Art, draws an association to the historic warfare term,
Brothers In Arms, where men from diverse backgrounds bond together in combat. Here, however, "Art" becomes the "armament" used by these two "brothers" whose works, while wholly different in form and content are unified in time, space and spirit. The art emerges from the love they share on their peaceful mission to inspire a more creative, loving world.
Tecari Shuman and Robert Black each in his own way came to discover a unique path to self expression: Shuman , through the medium of painting and Robert through photography and collage. Each had known at an early age that something lay hidden within. Only later in their lives, through the love and encouragement of another person, did they courageously transcend learned fears and judgments and begin sharing outwardly the inner spirit that animated their lives.
 In Shuman's story, while he had been the director of a health center in California, a man named Rutherford, an Arapahoe Road Chief, an itinerant spiritual teacher, appeared in Tecari's life. Rutherford fanned the latent embers of Tecari's creativity.
"If not for Rutherford, I don't know if the paintings would have happened. In my art I've always kept quiet, kept my art hidden. But because of him, I'm willing to come out to take more chances. My connection with him - that I don't think I even quite understand nor perhaps ever will - has made me more able to acknowledge who I am".
Robert Black found inspiration as a young fourth grader through the loving atmosphere of Miss Drumm's grade school art class. He began to paste together a colored paper assemblage of an automobile, simple and
organized, as his later-to-become architect's mind had envisioned. But it was Miss Drumm's thoughtful, stimulating encouragement that freed Black's imagination. She suggested adding star shapes to the car'swheels, jagged line cutouts and modernist geometric shapes to the piece's border. Suddenly, the whole composition came alive for Robert in a new and vibrant way that continues to inspire his work to this day.
Shuman and Black first encountered each other in a chance meeting about four years ago that has led to a firm and continuing friendship. At this time Shuman was combating post-polio syndrome and the beginnings of Parkinson's. Recognizing a kindred soul Black felt impelled to suggest to Shuman that art was the way to rekindle his creative passions. As Shuman ventured tentatively into painting Black became motivated to renew his own artistic exploration of collage. From this sharing each became a student and tutor for the other and the rest is history.

Celebrate with Art: The Brandon Artists Guild Announces Holiday Gift Show, Welcomes Three New Artists
Celebrate with Art, runs from November 8 through January 28
The Brandon Artists Guild (The BAG) kicks off the holiday season with affordable, gift-able art and craft pieces. The public is invited to the free opening reception on Friday, November 8 from 5pm to 7pm.
"Art makes a great gift but buying art for someone else can be a little intimidating," says Wenda Curtis, a BAG jewelry designer and board member. "So we're focusing on more affordable, approachable - and fun - pieces. The kind of work that makes people smile."
"In this all-member, all-media show we've invited the artists to work outside the media that they're used to," Curtis explains. "A potter might try painting. Or a jeweler might try sculpture. It'll be exciting to see what everyone comes up with."
In addition to the Celebrate with Art show, the BAG also welcomes three new member-artists. Catherine Palmer works in colored pencils; Michael DiMeola is a photographer; and Winslow Colwell combines photography with kite forms. The BAG debut of these artists' work coincides with the opening of the holiday show.
The Brandon Artists Guild is an artist-run gallery with approximately 40 exhibiting artists and additional supporting members. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit cultural organization, the BAG supports the visual arts through exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations and educational programs.

The Brandon Congregational Church is holding a traditional Turkey Dinner with all the trimmings at Fellowship Hall. Roast Turkey with cranberry sauce, stuffing and assorted vegetables, with homemade pie for dessert. A free will offering will be taken. Enjoy this traditional fall event with your family and friends.

The Brandon Congregational Church is looking for craftspeople and vendors! We are renting tables for a craft sale to be held in Fellowship Hall during Brandon's Moonlight Madness on Wednesday December 4th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Moonlight Madness is a well-attended town wide sales event and stores will be open late for holiday shoppers. Fellowship Hall is a large, heated building next to the church with a bathroom.
Tables are provided, size is 6 by 2 ½ feet and cost $25.00.

Zak Hampton, founding member, brings together an eclectic group of talented musicians from across the region. Fronting the band on tenor sax and the occasional vocal tune, Zak Hampton's Moose Crossing has brought high energy jazz, fused with popular funk, rock and blues music to the New England music scene for 10 years. Moose Crossing offers a unique vitality in their performances which foster a sense of community in shared expression through art. Hampton is joined by Jore Plotts on bass and Adam Schini on organ and keyboard. They perform youthful takes on the classics from Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra to Miles Davis and John Coltrane together with original jazz and more contemporary takes on tunes from The Doors, Bruno Mars and The Beatles thus promising something for all music lovers.

Call for Exhibit Proposals at the Compass Music and Arts Center
Compass is seeking innovative work for solo and/or group exhibits from artists working in a variety of media.
Curators and both emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply. Site-specific work/installations will also be considered. This is a rolling open call for exhibits.
A variety of exhibit spaces are available, giving flexibility to artists for the scope of their vision and needs.

OPERA at-a-glance: the latest exhibit at the Compass Music and Arts Center
Did you know that opera singers are basically Olympic athletes?
An opera singer has to be able to sustain high notes over a long period of time while using their body to amplify a sound so that it can be heard over a full orchestra and do so without any microphones. Opera singers show us the loudest sounds and the highest pitches the human body can produce. It takes many years before someone can audition to be cast in a professional company. This is one of the facts you can discover by visiting the 'Opera at-a-glance' exhibit in the Compass Music and Arts Center.
The Center is also providing a listening room where visitors can relax and sample different operas and hear the astounding voices of such great opera singers as Luciano Pavarotti and Renée Fleming.
The history of recorded sound is a further strength of the Compass Center as it hosts the Phonograph Rooms. Part of the exhibit will be devoted to how recording helped to popularize opera for all to enjoy.
The Compass Center is celebrating the world of opera with this exhibit to launch the
collaboration between the Compass Music and Arts Foundation and BARN OPERA and its founder and artistic director Josh Collier who is an internationally acclaimed opera singer.
The Foundation, through the new BARN OPERA venture, is organizing performances of loved operas through 2018 and beyond.

Chamber "dollars"- a refresher course!
Every now and then I think it's important to
remind those of us who have been taking Brandon Green
for years, and new businesses that have joined the Chamber, about the process for handling the certificates.
The $5.00, $20.00 and $25.00 certificates are legal tender and handled just like a check. You take the Brandon Green and give your customer change back, just like cash or a check. Then you deposit the Brandon Green into your account, just like a check. Simple and supportive of all our members.
