Hillview Teacher and Staff Year-End Gifts
We have a tradition of gifting to the staff as a community. Parents are encouraged to contribute to a centralized Teacher/Staff Gift Fund (organized by PTO volunteers) and all proceeds are used to buy gift cards for the entire Hillview team. The benefits of this approach are that
teachers and staff choose something they like with gift cards and we
recognize all 80 plus Hillview employees. The
Gift Fund is used to recognize all academy teachers, elective teachers, specialists, custodians, and staff.
Gift cards are delivered the last week of school on behalf of the entire Hillview community.
There are several ways to participate:

- Leave a check (made out to Molly Gibbons) in the Hillview office

Hillview Bike Rodeo | Thank you and Bike Safety Tips!
Thanks to everyone who helped out with the Hillview Bike Rodeo! Here is local press coverage of the event: "Hillview Bike Rodeo Offers Safety Training to Middle Schoolers" here and "Hillview Middle School Hosts Second Annual Bike Rodeo" here. Here
are some tips you can use to support safe biking:
- Do make sure your student has a snugly fitting helmet and knows how to adjust it. It is easy for those helmets to become loose over time.
- Do watch this 7-minute video with your student to review good practices: "Bike Safe, Bike Smart."
- Do mind student bicyclists when driving and don't drop off/pick up students in areas where it is expressly prohibited (Olive Street at intersection Santa Cruz Avenue).
- Do fill out the Oak Grove Bike Route survey here to the encourage the city to provide dedicated bike lanes.
Write about any concerns you have here about student and bicycle pedestrian safety (this is how we know what to work on!)

Hillview Book Fair Coming May 21 - 24!
Monday, May 21 - Thursday, May 24. Open each day before school 8:00 - 8:30, during brunch and lunch, and for 30 minutes after school. We will also be open during Hillview Open House on May 24, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Explore new books and stock up for summer reading for the whole family. The Book Fair will offer the Hillview Summer Reading books plus the assigned book for incoming M-A freshman. We will have a hand-picked selection of books for younger elementary siblings. Book Fair proceeds support Hillview PTO.

Hillview Students - State Science Fair Winners
Posted on the The Almanac online here are the Hillview winners of the State Science Fair. It also showcases recent science events at Oak Knoll, Encinal, Laurel schools. The district PTO and the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation provide volunteers, supplies, and funding.

4th Annual Menlo Park Relay for Life - Hillview Edition
On Friday night, over 300 Hillview students participated in the Relay for Life event, raising an incredible $91,000 for the American Cancer Society! All funds will go towards cancer research and services.
The event was the culmination of six weeks of preparation and fundraising by the 44 teams taking part, with students attending weekly meetings and engaging in various fundraising activities. Congratulations to all the students for their amazing efforts and for making an impact on the lives of others.
A big thank you to the 50 plus parent volunteers who helped organize the event and supported the students on the night!

Chorus/Jazz/Lab Bands Spring Concert

Did You Know?
Hillview Music department has put together over 35 concerts and community events this year! We brought music to the Menlo Park Halloween Parade and we participated in the Disney Tour, performed at SF City Hall and Filoli, had Joint Concerts with the M-A Music department, the Spring Musical, "Beauty and the Beast," and hosted the California Music Educator Association (CMEA) Regional West Choral Festival.

There were over 700 high school and middle school students representing 18 schools, including the Hillview Chorus. We had groups from as far as Merced, Dublin, and Gilroy, come to sing. They performed for a distinguished panel of judges, participated in clinics, and a sight reading session. Hillview received a Composite rating of Excellent and rating of Superior in Sight Reading. Congratulations to the Hillview Chorus!

Menlo-Atherton Bear Freshman Football Player This is a "Freshman Only" team and there is no experience required. Visit our website to sign-up and get our summer schedule. Feel free to contact our Athletic Directors, Paul Snow here or Steven Kryger here with any questions.
Alpine Strikers Tryouts for Fall Soccer - End of May. Does your child want to try out for club soccer and receive coaching from our professional soccer coaches? Consider Alpine Strikers here!
Sign Up for AYSO Boys and girls born between January 1, 2000 and January 31, 2014 are invited to play soccer this fall. Parents can go here to complete the first step of registration and sign up to volunteer. Registration fees are $150 ($100 kinderleague.) After May 31, players will be put on wait list and pay fees of $200/$150 kinderleague if placed on a team. Scholarships are available.
United States Youth Volleyball League Registration for the Fall 2018 Palo Alto program (boys and girls ages 7-15) is open! Practice will take place Tuesdays and Saturdays at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto. For more information regarding schedule and fees, visit us here.
Summer Camps
Stanford Men's Basketball Camp For 1st - 7th grade students here, is designed to provide a safe, fun, and instructional environment for campers from the Bay Area and beyond. We emphasize the importance of Education, Lifetime Skills, Fundamental and Basketball Skill Development, and Individual and Team Competition.
Volunteer Opportunities
Project Read, support literacy in your community with Project Read - Menlo Park here, which provides 1:1 tutor lessons, English Conversation Club, English courses, and lessons in digital literacy to adults in the Menlo Park community. You can support the program by volunteering your time or by making a tax-deductible donation online during the "Give for Literacy" campaign.
All Students Matter Classroom Volunteers Needed Next Year Schools in eastern Menlo Park and East Palo Alto are looking for volunteers to work with students in grades K-5. You'll go to the same classroom once a week, for about an hour, to help with reading or math. All Students Matter here provides training and coordinates everything.
