I would like to open this week's update by welcoming those incoming 2018-2019 families that will be new to Lake Nona Middle School in August. Typically we contact our school community each week via The Kingdom's Chronicle to share news on important events, recognize student/staff successes, and recap our weekly results in the form of our leading success indicators that impact student achievement (table).

Common Final Exams
On Monday morning we begin with the administration of CFE's campus-wide - daily schedule. If you have a student at LNMS, please make sure they arrive to school on time coming off a good night's rest and have eaten a good breakfast that morning. Thank you.

Knight Sweep This Week
When teachers are investing all they have into student achievement and engagement, it's frustrating to have students walk in late to class. At the very least it's a disruption, but it can also cause somewhat of a restart to the class.

So occasionally we conduct a "hall sweep." It's pretty simple. We pick a certain period of the day and once the bell rings, teachers are asked to lock their doors and refer all tardy students to their grade level office. Once students report there, the administrators assign consequences to students caught in the hall sweep because observably these students were tardy to class.

We mention this because we will have hall sweeps this week! It's obvious to all that punctuality is a good lifelong skill to possess, and this is something all schools try to enforce.

Attention 7th Grade Parents
Pleases be advised ALL students entering the 7th grade are REQUIRED to have the Tetanus Diphtheria (TDAP) shot before entering school per Orange County Health Department. Please bring proof of immunization ASAP. No shot = No schedule!

Wishing you a successful week ahead.

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Knight Music
Recap of powerful performances by our Knights near the end of 2017-2018 . . .

LNMS & LNHS Combined Performance (May 10th)

The Orchestra is committed to increasing access to the symphonic art form by providing full orchestra experiences to enjoy beautiful music with family and friends. On May 10th, the LNMS Orchestra played with the LNHS Orchestra  joining our two schools together.

Orchestra (May 15th)

On May 15th, the LNMS Orchestra presented Heroes & Monsters as their theme for music. The Beginning Orchestra entertained us with Abandoned Funhouse and Ninja. The Intermediate Orchestra followed with Antagonist, El Toro and Dragon Hunter. The Advanced/Symphonic Orchestra began with the famous TV program Game of Thrones. Godzilla was a winner with music and movie production. All orchestras united with Orpheus in the Underworld. We say a heartfelt goodbye to the 8th grade students!

What a beautiful show of talent and hard work by the LNMS Bands that was presented to an eager and adoring audience!

Ms. Hannah Jennings and crew started the show with the catchy tune, Smoke on the Water, followed up by Halo 3, Battle Quest and World of Warcraft. Heavy metal master Metallica's Enter Sandman and Ozzy Osbourne's best know hit Crazy Train were performed by the Jazz Band. Gamers should have recognized the vivid and dramatic music Batman: Arkham City that is the soundtrack from the acclaimed video performed by the Concert Band. Based on the World of Warcraft: Taverns of Azeroth original game soundtrack of Lion's Pride was incredible and performed by the  Beginning Band. The evening closed with American rock band Journey's Don't Stop Believin' performed by the Jazz Band.

2017-2018: All good things must come to an end.
We well up with pride and amazement at how brilliantly our music students performed. They chose to go above and beyond to pursue passions and share their talents with each other and the community.

Jazz band, Symphonic band and Orchestra, Concert band, Wind Ensemble, Beginning band and Orchestra, Intermediate Orchestra and Advanced Orchestra; these are all some activities in addition to the required credits, filling lives of students, educators and the local community with color and creativity and class. Kudos to all those involved this year!

¡Buenos días!

The Spanish National Junior Honor Society, Latimos Unidos Chapter volunteered their time last week to prepare a home cooked meal for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House - Nemours in Lake Nona. Summer 2018 Laptop Distribution

As we wind down this school year, we are already planning for the 2018-2019 school year and our implementation of digital curriculum. Administration and teachers have been meeting, training, and already building lesson plans which incorporate digital elements and the use of the district learning management system, Canvas.  We are excited about this educational shift and hope you are as well.

Students will receive their district issued laptops prior to the beginning of the school year. Please adhere to the following schedule for device distribution, including the daily last name breakdown. This schedule has been developed to minimize the amount of wait time as we process over 1,400 devices for our eager Knights. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in making this a successful first year distribution.
  • Wednesday, August 1st - 8th graders
  • Thursday, August 2nd - 7th graders
  • Friday, August 3rd - 6th graders
~ 8:30-12:00 last names beginning with A-L
~ 1:00-5:00 last names beginning with M-Z

On Saturday, August 4th we invite our Exceptional Education (ESE) and English Language Learners (ELL) students to a more individualized experience.  From 9:00-1:00pm, additional resources will be present to help students through the process of receiving and setting up their laptops.

Additionally, makeups days for those who were not able to attend on their assigned dates are as follows:
  • Saturday, August 4th- 1:00-3:00
  • Wednesday, August 8th- 2:00-5:00
** All dates are tentative so please continue to check the LNMS website for any possible changes.

General Information regarding distribution:
  • All students should report to the cafeteria upon arrival.
  • Parents are welcome to attend with their students, but it is not required.
  • Photos for IDs will be taken if the student did not turn in their ID from the 2017-2018 school year and previously collected IDs will be returned. New students will receive IDs, this includes incoming 6th graders and any other new students.
  • Laptop covers will be sold for $20.00 cash in the cafeteria.  They are also available for purchase through Schoolpay.beginning August 1st.
  • Vendors, including PTSA and the PE department, will be available in the cafeteria so it's a great time to sign forms, sign up to volunteer, and buy PE uniforms!
  • Snack items will be available for sale.
  • Please bring your patience and smiles with you!

Monday's Motivational Moment

FIND YOUR VISION

One of the great dreamers of the twentieth century was Walt Disney. Any person who could create the first sound cartoon, first all-color cartoon, and first animated feature-length motion picture is definitely someone with vision. But Disney's greatest masterpieces of vision were Disneyland and Walt Disney World. And the spark for that vision came from an unexpected place.

Back when Walt's two daughters were young, he used to take them to the amusement park in the Los Angeles area on Saturday mornings. His girls loved it, and he did too. Amusement parks are a kids' paradise, with a wonderful atmosphere: the smell of popcorn and cotton candy, the gaudy colors of signs advertising rides, and the sounds of kids screaming as the roller coaster plummets over a hill.

Walt was especially captivated by the carousel. As he approached it, he saw a blur of bright images racing around to the tune of energetic calliope music. But when he got closer and the carousel stopped, he could see that his eye had been fooled. He observed shabby horses with cracked and chipped paint. And he noticed that only the horses on the outside row moved up and down. The others stood their lifeless, bolted to the floor.

The cartoonist's disappointment inspired him with a grand vision. In his mind's eye he could see an amusement park where the illusion didn't evaporate, where children and adults could enjoy a carnival
atmosphere without the seedy side that accompanies some circuses or traveling carnivals. His dream became Disneyland.

For Disney, vision was never a problem. Because of his creativity and desire for excellence, he always saw what could be.

The lesson for our Knights? If you think you lack vision, just look inside yourself. Draw on your natural gifts and desires. Look to your calling if you have one. And if you still don't sense a vision of your own, then consider teaming up with someone whose vision resonates with you.

-------------

Good luck with your final exams this week Knights. Your teachers have you prepared and you've done the work. Just do your best.
