November 2019
Dear  ,

Two of our favorite events of the year are coming up, and we would love to see you there! The Holiday Tea and Optional Cookie Exchange is this weekend, so check out the details below and let us know if you can make it!

Upcoming Club Events

Holiday Tea and Optional Cookie Exchange!
Please join us at our Twelfth Annual Holiday Tea and Optional Cookie Exchange this weekend on Sunday, December 8th, from 2-4 pm! Enjoy tea with friends, meet other Smithies, share recipes, and sample delicious homemade creations and confections. If you don't bake, don't worry; we'd love to have you join us anyway!

If the holidays inspire you to fire up the oven and mix a batch of your favorite holiday treats, please bring about 2-3 dozen cookies to share (some for tasting at the event and some for the exchange) and bring copies of the recipe for those who want to try it themselves. It is also a good idea to bring a container to transport your favorite cookies back home for sharing with your family and friends (... or keep hidden!).

We will gather at the home of Jean Davidson '73 in Atherton. Club members already have received an Evite and should respond there; other alumnae may RSVP to the Club's email,  [email protected]by Wednesday, December 4th. When we receive your RSVP, we will send you the street address for the event!

Annual Cider Party for Prospective Students
Coming up in January is our Annual Cider Party for Prospective Students and Alumnae. Please join us for one of our favorite new year traditions by welcoming incoming Smithies (the class of 2024!) to the Smith community at our Hot Cider Party. Meet, mingle, and give advice to the prospective, recently accepted, and current students while sipping cider and eating baked goods. This event will be held at the home of Laura Selznick '68 on Sunday, January 12th, from 2-4 pm in Palo Alto. If you're interested in joining us, please RSVP via Evite invite (club members only), or reach out to the club directly through email, at [email protected], for the address

Join the Club Board!
We're looking for a Webmaster to join the club board! If you're interested, please contact [email protected] . You can check out our website at https://www.peninsulasmithclubca.org/ and see what needs to be updated!

Diana McDonough '66 hosted the group on Wednesday the 20th to discuss Beate Sirota Gordon's "The Only Woman in the Room." Thank you, Diana, for your hospitality.

Gordon's memoir highlights her role in writing the post-World War II Japanese constitution, but also describes both her earlier and her later life, all of which was unusual and interesting. We were fortunate to hear about Gordon first-hand from Nancy Hawes, who worked with her in the Asia Society. We admired Gordon: her brilliance, especially in languages, her self-confidence, and her achievements. Not so much the book, which is adequately written but not really good, perhaps a reflection of its origin in tape-recorded sessions.

January 15th: "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" by Victor Hugo

February 19th: "The Marriage of Opposites" by Alice Hoffman

If you're interested in joining the book club, please contact  Sally Smith '64  for more information.

Stay tuned for more Smithie events and news next month. If anyone is interested in volunteering with the club, please feel free to reach out to [email protected] ! Thanks!
