History from Art: From Saint to Santa Claus
History from Art: From Saint to Santa Claus
Tuesday, December 3 @ 7 PM
Woodbridge Main Library - Ground Floor Meeting Room
Michael Norris, Ph.D.will be our guide in an exploration through centuries of art, much of it now housed in East Coast museums, to learn how a kind Turkish bishop evolved into one of Christianity’s most beloved saints. Then through an analysis of American artwork we'll see Saint Nicholas changed again—into our beloved Santa Claus.

Presenter, Michael Norris, received his BA in Classics from the University of California at San Diego, his MA in Classics and his Ph.D. in Art History from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He spent twenty years at the Cloisters Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. For over twenty years Professor Norris has also given presentations in classical and medieval art throughout New Jersey. In addition, he has lectured on trips all over the world.

This program is free and open to all. No registration is needed.

News from Friends
Important Notice about Our Museum Passes:

Gary Garrido Schneider, Executive Director of Grounds for Sculpture, notified the Friends of the Library that museum passes for Grounds for Sculpture will no longer be offering the Library Pass Program effectively immediately.

The Friends purchased two passes for the Library. One expired on October 31, 2019, so the Library will only have one pass available for circulation until May when the second pass expires.
Visit the Main Library for your next culture pass, courtesy of the Friends of the Library--there are many more to visit. Most Museum Passes circulate like a book for five days. Check our online catalog for availability of passes.

Volunteer Hours for
Young Adult Book Reviews

You asked, we listened. For those in need of more community service hours, you now have another option! Here’s how it works:

  • You read a book at least 100 pages in length.
  • You fill out the form we provide in the library, which includes information about the book, and a 1.5-page review (I.e., Half of the front and the entire back of the page) of the book.
  • Turn the form in--with a week for us to process your entry--we can we give you one hour of community service for every 100 pages read. So if you read a 374-page book, you get three hours.

That’s it. It’s easy!
Programs offered by the Children's Department are intended for children in grades K - 7 with an accompanying adult for children under 9 years.
Many of our programs do not require registration, but kindly click on calendar links or the flyers posted to the eNews below for registration information.
