Joshua McLellan is a leader at Sanborn Regional High School. What makes Josh a good leader is that he leads by example and doesn't mind rolling up his sleeves to get things done!

As member and two times president of Key Club Josh leads the way in raising money for various causes including the Eliminate Project and Thirst Project. The Eliminate Project aims to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus globally and the Thirst Project has a goal of providing clean water to the impoverished country of Swaziland. In addition to international philanthropy, Josh has provided countless volunteer hours in his community. Some of the events he has helped with are PTA and Recreation Center events. Annually Josh helps organize a Thanksgiving baskets drive for the food pantries of Kingston, Newton, and Fremont. Giving of his time is something that comes natural to Josh.

The same qualities that are evident in Josh's innate drive toward service made him a pleasure to have in class. Josh is always polite, focused, and aware of others. He is the student who ensures that his peers have a partner to work with. Josh is also willing to help others understand the task at hand. Josh is insightful with classroom materials and is not afraid to add to the conversation making him a good student and as well as a good citizen.

Above all else Josh is humble, down-to-earth, and dedicated to making this world a better place.
Senior Spotlight : Audrey Wood
An Article by Amanda Fuller
If you haven't yet had the privilege to meet Audrey Wood, it wouldn't take long for you to attribute words like bubbly, witty, and hysterical to her name. Audrey has a way of lightening the mood in any situation and greets everyone with a smile; one of my favorite parts of the day. Assistant Principal Mr. K shared this sentiment, saying  "Audrey is a fixture in the hallway who always has a smile on her face!" Mr. K expressed that he has enjoyed getting to know Audrey his first year here and will miss their sarcastic banter next year.
English teacher Ms. Graham had this to say about Audrey "In the time that I have had Audrey in the classroom, she has grown into a more responsible and self possessed individual. I always look forward to when she will visit my class and share what's going on in her life. She even puts up with me quoting Anchorman at her, even though I don't think she's ever seen the movie ("AUDREY! Look at the bags under my eyes!"). I wish her the best of luck and so much success as she moves to the next chapter in her life."
As Audrey finishes up her senior year she has started to make plans for her life after Sanborn. Audrey will be attending SNHU in the fall to study English. While she is still exploring what she will do with this major (teaching, writing, journalism) this is a subject that she has enjoyed over her high school career and is excited to continue. I know that Audrey will find her niche in this area and am excited to see the path she chooses. SNHU and their community are lucky to have her!
Senior Spotlight : Karin Frederickson
An Article by Teacher Colin McQueen
Karin is a tremendous student with an unbelievably eclectic list of interests and accomplishments. I had the privilege of having her as a student in her sophomore year where she proved to be a diligent and conscientious worker. This year, I've had the distinct pleasure of having her as a member of Advisory. In getting to know her, I've found that she has accomplished a vast array of things over the past four years. This year, she decided to compete in the Miss New Hampshire Teen USA Pageant. Astonishingly, she was the 4th place runner-up in her very first pageant ever. Her approach to that challenge was utterly fearless. She has also maintained three jobs while carrying a demanding course load that includes spending part of her day at the Seacoast School of Technology.

Some of her many hobbies include snowmobiling, fishing, and playing video games (she is a self-proclaimed Fortnite expert). However, I don't believe any of those passions surpass her love for pizza. Karin is also currently working as an intern at a Dental Office, and wishes to be a future dental hygienist.

Despite the many things that she has accomplished, and the many more things she will accomplish, I think Karin's most valuable trait is her innate ability to hold pleasant conversations with people from all walks of life. This is why she will be so greatly missed by the Sanborn community upon her graduation, but that skill will also undoubtedly help her achieve much success in the future. Best of luck, Karin!
Senior Spotlight : Luc LeBlanc
An Article by Teacher Josh White

Luc Leblanc will soon be graduating this year at Sanborn Regional High School.  Through his character and integrity, Luc represents a model student at Sanborn. Luc has not only excelled in the classroom thought his high school career, he has also shown leadership on the athletic field. It is because of this, he has been named captain of all three sports that he participates in (Soccer, Hockey and Baseball.) Luc has had a unique experience playing fall sports, where he, not only lettered in soccer, but also was a member of the school's football team.
In the classroom, Luc is a critical thinker, he asks questions that stimulate discussion, and continues to communicate his ideas, both written and verbally. Luc has challenged himself through the courses he has taken, which include AP Government,  AP Biography, AP calculus, AP history and a "Running start" English class, where Luc will be receiving credit through Southern New Hampshire University. In addition to a challenging course load, Luc has also been a part of "Life of a student" and was given the "Science student of the Year" award his Junior year.
When Ms. Golino was asked to speak about Luc she stated that " Luc is a hardworking and friendly young man. At the beginning of the year, he decided to take AP Biology instead of Marine Biology because he wanted to challenge himself. This is an example of the motivation he has as a student. " This shows that Luc is not only a hard worker on the the athletic field, but also in the classroom.
Although all teachers love having Luc in their classrooms, when he leaves, I have no doubt that he will go on to do great things.  He is looking forward to studying engineering at the University of New Hampshire as well as being a part of different on campus clubs.
Senior Spotlight : Chris Hanna
An Article by Teacher John Welch

If you have had the opportunity to spectate a varsity football or baseball game the past four years you would have noticed this individual on the field.  Chris Hanna is a standout three-sport athlete at Sanborn Regional High School, who has achieved success both on and off the field. Chris is a very hard-working and dedicated member of the football, wrestling, and baseball teams. He has been a member of the football team for the past four years; was a two-way starter on the Varsity team for the past three years; and was elected captain of the team. Chris received the football team's MVP his junior and senior seasons, setting the school's single-season rushing record of 1,075 yards in only 8 games this past fall, and selected to the Division II Football All State Team. Chris has also been chosen to participate in the CHAD East vs. West Football All Star Game.  Chris was also selected as captain of the school's baseball team. He has demonstrated the skills necessary to be a good leader, including superior work ethic, and ability to motivate his peers, and accountability for his actions.
Driven and compassionate are just a few words to describe Chris Hanna.  I have had the privilege and honor of coaching Chris throughout his high school career.  He is a hard working and self-motivated individual, who was a pleasure to coach.
Coach Larcomb, Chris' baseball and wrestling coach, describes Chris as an individual who "works extremely hard at making himself better, but most importantly everyone around him". Coach Larcomb describes Chris as being very coachable and always looking for ways to improve by seeking out advice, listening, and setting goals to work on.
Mr. White, Chris' football coach and teacher, is most impressed by Chris' ability to challenge himself and achieve results through hard work and dedication. As a person, Mr. White can't say enough good things about Chris; he is the type of person that always leaves a positive impression on everyone he meets.
As an individual, Chris is a polite and respectful young man who is a role model for other student athletes at Sanborn. Chris has demonstrated the ability to balance school, work, and sports, and be highly successful at all three. In the fall, Chris will be attending Bridgewater State University where he will be a member of the football team.  Chris also plans on playing baseball at Bridgewater State University, and majoring in Business Administration.
Senior Spotlight : Kaitlin Broadhurst
An Article by Teacher Brian Gray

Kaitlin Broadhurst is a graduating senior this year from Sanborn regional High School. Kaitlin is one of the top students in her class and it is because of her ability to constantly push herself to be her best. Anyone who as had the pleasure of having Kaitlin Broadhurst in class sees this first hand in the classroom. She has taking a challenging course load here at Sanborn filled with honors level courses, college credit classes and has been involved in student organizations such as Life of a Student. Kaitlin helped Sanborn get state recognition by placing second in a video competition sponsored by New Hampshire's Life of a Athlete. Her video highlighted student athletes and members of our different clubs here at Sanborn. Kaitlin recently helped plan and implement a mentor trip to the district's Bakie Elementary school were her and her classmates positively engages with students. Kaitlin has also been an active member of our girls basketball program the last four years.

Kaitlin played three years of Varsity basketball with her only year on Junior Varsity resulting in Sanborn's first undefeated season. Kaitlin as a senior was selected a captain and helped lead her teammates to a 16 win season and a second straight playoff berth. Kaitlin Broadhurst is the type of player that every coach wants on their team. She is passionate about the sport and a great role model to her teammates. She always made her teammates better on the court with her passing ability and her understanding of the game. Kaitlin was fearless on the court and could always be counted on to hit a big three or swing momentum in Sanborn's favor with her play on the court  She could always be counted on to review scouting information and knew her opponents inside and out reviewing film before contests. She was also a mentor to younger players on the team and has left a lasting impact on the girls basketball program. Kaitlin is a true competitor who is determined to give her best effort and always wanted to be on the floor to help her team. She also was recently recognized as a NH Scholar Athlete and a member of the NHBCO All Academic Team this past basketball season. She also was among the top 3pt shooters in the area as mentioned in the Eagle Tribune averaging at least one a game.

Kaitlin plans on working in the medical field and will attend a school that will help her further that goal. Kaitlin's ability to focus on details, problem solve and push herself to be her best will make her an excellent medical practitioner in the future.  Kaitlin Broadhurst has definitely left an impact on the Sanborn Community and is a graduating senior that Sanborn can expect big things from in the future.

Senior Spotlight : Jacob Donahue
An Article by Teacher Katie Graham

Jacob Donahue is ready to see his Senior year come to an end and apply the skills he has learned here at Sanborn to his passions outside of school. Jake has an internship at a machine shop in Amesbury and hopes that this opportunity will expand into a full-time position after graduation. He's considering taking night classes on advanced manufacturing while he works full time.

English teacher, Lauren Petraitis, said this about Jake: " After getting to know Jake this year, I've found that he is more of an old soul than most students. He's always interested in stories from other generations- particularly his grandfather's war stories. We had some nice conversations earlier this year about how experiences change people's perspectives and shape their values. I really appreciate his curiosity around the experiences of others that are different from his own."

Jake says that his most fond memories of Sanborn were in Shop Class with Mr. Duffy, no doubt adding to his already existing passion for how things work.

Good luck, Jake, as you move into the next phase in your life! Your dedication to your work will take you far!
Senior Spotlight : Shaun Murphy
An Article by Teacher Marissa Vitolo

Shaun Murphy is a polite student with a calm demeanor. He loves to make his friends laugh and is almost always in great spirits.

He has done a lot of growing up during his years a Sanborn. He has found a deeper appreciation for his family, friends, and teachers.

Mr. Dawson had this to say about Shaun, " As a new person at SRHS, Shaun actively sought me out to introduce himself and welcomed me to the school.  He created an instant and lasting connection that very much impressed me." Mrs. Boisvert and Ms. Vitolo both agree that Shaun is very personable and is good at striking up conversations. Mrs. St. Jean stated, "Shaun is kind and respectful.  Early this year in Senior English, he worked really hard on his college essay and ended up with a final version that he should be very proud of."

While at SRHS, Shaun played on the varsity football team, tried his hand at basketball, and is playing baseball his senior year. His favorite subjects are Science, Art, and Social Studies.

As he moves on from high school student to working adult, Shaun hopes to get an apprenticeship. He wants to be able to learn the electrical trade with Piquette and Howard Electric. Let's all wish him the best.
Senior Spotlight : Olivia Conant
An Article by "The Science Squad"

Olivia Conant, known as Olive in our halls, has grown so much over her time in high school. She was once a student who found it hard to engage in classes. Over time, she has found a supportive community through her involvement in theater and her optimistic and energetic spirit has helped her persevere.

Olive always finds an outlet to do something in her own special way. She is an outgoing student who is successful because of her unique energy and communication skills. Olive is always able to advocate for herself and her own needs. She often recognizes that she will be successful in a different setting or by completing assessments in another way and communicates her needs.

In Chemistry class, Olive decided right away that the math involved in chemistry was daunting. But she always came to class with a positive attitude and tried her best in spite of the challenging material.  Anatomy and physiology had less math but more labs. Olive never gave up in class but rather chose to think outside the classroom. She would work outside the class in ways that fit her personality better. On more than one occasion, Olive surprised herself with her success, but it was no surprise to her teachers to see such grit and determination pay off!

Olive Conant found her passion when she was enrolled in Forensic science. At the end of the year, there is a serial killer project done to tie in all the evidence covered in the course and have students do some criminal profiling. Ted Bundy was Olive's serial killer to investigate, and while studying his life, she realized that she might like to do this for a living. "Fascinating" was an often outburst from Olive as she heard about the killers the other students were investigating. This lead to her taking an online course her senior year to learn more about Forensic Psychology.

It is no surprise that she has decided to attend SNHU in the fall to study criminal justice and forensic psychology. She would like to play a role in her community by being involved in law enforcement, solving crimes, or understanding forensic psychology. Whatever specific path Olive chooses to follow when she graduates from SRHS, one thing is for certain: We will miss her and her genuine nature!
Senior Spotlight : Matt White
An Article by Caitlin Golino

Matt White is a hard nut to crack. When I first met Matt his sophomore year, he was quiet and a bit stubborn. However, once I learned a bit more about Matt and his interests, he opened up. He has become a confident young man who knows who he is and what he wants to accomplish.

Matt loves woodworking, youtube, and music. Of those three, woodworking is his passion. However, he can't resist a good youtube video or playlist on his iphone. Matt's dad owns a construction company and he is constantly on the job helping build houses with his father. Matt has also completed many construction projects for the high school and for SST. Matt attended the Construction Technologies Program at SST and built sheds as well as tiny houses. Matt enjoyed building the tiny houses best, but he has also helped build the beehive stand as well as other projects.

Mr. Kelly, the Shop Teacher  says "I have worked with Matt White for 4 years.  I met him as a freshman in Shop Club. He later became VP of Shop Club.  Matt has grown into a confident young man, quite a change from the hesitant freshman I met 4 years ago.  Matt found a home in the building trades and I have no doubt he will continue to excel there. I will miss Matt's enthusiasm and quiet sense of humor."

Matt plans on attending Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor, Maine. He will be nearer his brother who attends Maine Maritime Academy and will be studying Building construction: residential, commercial, and industrial. He will graduate with skills to obtain a leadership position within the construction industry. Maybe someday he will build your home! Congratulations Matt. We wish you the best of luck.

Senior Spotlight : Rachel Curtain
An Article by Jack Kelly

Rachel Curtin is Sanborn's hidden treasure.  She came to us in Junior year from Salem MA. I met her shortly afterwards.  Right away she impressed with her quiet competence. She was a different kind of kid, in the best ways possible. For example, she transferred in from Essex Tech.  Prom queen pretty, she enrolled in SST Auto and Welding at Sanborn. Rachel quickly became part of our lunch group and I have been fortunate to work with her in 2 classes, as well as tease her gently everyday at lunch for the past two years.

English teacher Lauren Petraitis says:  "Rachel is a humble, yet incredibly intelligent young woman. Despite being a new student her junior year, she excelled in Honors Literature and stood out as one of the most eloquent, well-mannered, and kind students in the class. She brought her knowledge about the Salem Witch Trials to class during our unit on social injustices- a topic that students were highly interested in. What astounds me most about Rachel is how well-rounded she is: one minute, she is debating with male peers about driverless vehicles, and the next she is discussing women's rights issues in third world countries. She is a pretty amazing student, and I look forward to see what she does after Sanborn!"

Rachel is thoughtful and mature.  She takes a different path. When I was encouraging her to fill out her National Honor Society Application, she thought about it carefully and replied: "I don't think it's for me".    Rachel is not shy, (no one with her infectious laugh could ever be called shy), yet recently when she was deciding whether to attend the Senior Honor Dinner, she respectfully said "I don't need that type of attention".  Rachel is going to take a gap year but I am confident college is in her future.

English Teacher Katie Graham adds:  Rachel is an amazing person! She always contributes to class discussion and gives unique perspectives to the topics in class. She's friendly and a joy to have in class. She will be a student I will greatly miss when they move on after graduation.

Rache consistently outperforms most of the guys in Welding (to their consternation).  We call her the Iron Curtin. Welding Teacher Rand Duffy says: "Wow that girl can weld. She was one the the best welders in class last year. She loves learning new things and retains them very well. She still asks me for assistance when needed. She spends as much time in shop as she can. I hope see continues with welding or auto repair. I know she will do well"

I tell Rachel that she is the student I look forward to hearing from in 5 years, because she will be doing something different and incredible.  I am grateful for all Rachel has brought to Sanborn.

Senior Spotlight : Hannah Shepherd
An Article by Caitlin Golino

Hannah is one of those students that you might not notice right away in class. She is a quiet, hard working young woman who excels in school. I have had the pleasure of knowing Hannah since her sophomore year in high school. In Biology, she was a student that always went above and beyond what was required of her. Hannah is a metacognitive student in the classroom: she thinks about her learning and dedicates herself to exemplary work.

Hannah has enjoyed both English and Biology here at Sanborn. One of her favorite teachers Ms. Petraitis, who teaches English, says "Hannah's work ethic surpasses that of her peers. Last year, she always made sure that she finished her assignments with the most possible effort and dedication. Not only that, but she would encourage her friends to complete their work and help them as well. I loved having Hannah as a student and I miss her this year!"

Hannah plans on attending Great Bay Community College next year and hopes to study marine rehabilitation or zoology. She would love to work with animals. During her time here at Sanborn, she was also a part of the animal and plant science program at SST and loved the program. Her love for animals is also fostered by volunteering at the NHSPCA and the Deerfield Fair.

Although she may be quiet and unassuming, I have really grown to appreciate Hannah and her quiet yet sarcastic personality. Hannah will be missed when she leaves Sanborn. I look forward to watching as she takes steps towards a bright future! Congratulations Hannah and the Class of 2018!
Sanborn Welcomes New Batch of Bees
The Bee Project Is An Initiative Funded by the Sanborn Seminary Trustees

Today was an exciting day at Sanborn as our new batch of bees arrived! Pictured here are students from the AP Biology class who have been training on how to keep bees. Dressed in appropriate attire, they transferred the bees from their shipping container into their new home on our property.
The Sanborn bee program was an initiative funded a few years ago by the Sanborn Seminary Trustees as a classroom grant project. With the grant, Sanborn Science teachers bought all of the equipment needed to sustain an active beehive program at he school and hired a local master beekeeper to train staff (and students) on how to sustain the bee program at Sanborn. Learning about how beehives work and their relationship with our environment is exactly the kind of real-world, authentic learning hat we like to promote at Sanborn.
If you are ever in the area and want to check out our hive, it is located at the back of our building.

National Honor Society Happenings
An Update by NHS Advisor Liz Richardson
On May 6 th , 14 National Honor Society students: Abby Brennan, Ali Gannon, Bridget Abney, Chris DeYoung, Colin Holt, Eliza Johnson, Emma Donigian, Jenna Gluck, Kashief Bogannam, Lauren Lanseigne, Maggie Rasmussen, Michelle Collette, Nicole Tebo, and Zach Thomas volunteered in the rain as finish line cheerers, route marshals and parking attendants for the annual Cycle the Seacoast event held by the American Lung Association that ends in Portsmouth, NH. Cycle the Seacoast is a one-day, multi-route cycling event, with 25, 50, or 100 mile options to choose from if you wish to participate. The 100 mile route loops through Fremont, Newton, and neighboring towns and ends with water views along the historic Seacoast in New Hampshire. This is the second year the Sanborn NHS has volunteered for the event.

Teacher appreciation week was a great success! On May 7 th , the National Honor Society hosted a teacher appreciation car wash. We had a great turn out and washed 10 cars! This has been an ongoing tradition and is much appreciated by the teachers who need some help getting the pollen and dust off their cars. The week was busy with free breakfast and free lunch for the teachers (Thank you PTO!) and made-to-order smoothies! Friday wrapped up the week with a special token for each teacher.  Lots of grateful students and teachers!

End of Year Plans - Last Days of School For Grades 9-11
June 18-19 Will Be For Competency Recovery

Dear Parents/Guardians of Sanborn Regional High School Grade 9-11 Students,
In order to provide students with every possible opportunity to obtain full credit for all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on the last two days of school, June 18 and 19. On these days, we will run 90 minute extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) periods.

FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day for 40 minutes and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. During these end-of-year extended FLT periods, teachers will be available to work with students on projects for competency recovery.  Students who will not pass a course will have the opportunity to meet with their guidance counselor to complete a credit check, re-evaluate their course selections for the 2018-19 school year and to initiate the process for credit recovery.

Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students not passing a competency or who have not finished any required work in one or more of their courses. These sessions will provide students with the opportunity for teacher supported competency recovery that will not be available over the summer.  If students are not able to make up the competency/credit at the end of the year, they will likely have to repeat the class next school year.

Students who are passing all of their competencies and who have completed all required work for their classes   will not be required to attend these extended focused learning opportunities. Please be aware, however, that bus transportation will only be available at the end of the regular school day at 2:10 PM. Please also note that the last regular day of school for grades 9-11 will be Friday June 15, with dismissal at 12:00PM.
Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) by Friday, June 15 at the latest if they will be required to stay for any and all of the extended FLT sessions. For questions about your child's grades, please contact your child's teacher(s) at (603) 642-3341.

The schedule for the days at the end of the year will be as follows:

Technology Device Collection
All students will be permitted to take their school-issued technology devices (chromebooks/laptops) home for the summer. These devices have been checked out by students through our school library system. Before the end of the year, all students will need to renew the check-out of their device with the school library. If students do not complete this task before the last day of school then the school will assume that the device has been lost or damaged and will pursue payment of the replacement cost for the device.
Please contact the office at (603) 642-3341 if you have any questions about this plan.

Students will also get feedback on how they answer practice questions. The courses are taught by specialist SAT tutor Brian Evans-Jones, who has taught both math and English language arts for many years. Numbers are limited to just 10 per course to guarantee students individual attention.

Allison Neal, the founder and owner of New England Tutors, said, "We are delighted to be running these courses for the first time in partnership with Austin17 House . A good SAT score is a vital element in any college application, and we are very happy to help the students in Rockingham county boost their chances through our courses."

The SAT Math and Reading/Writing Prep are $200 per course, with a $25 discount for booking both together . Sessions are held on Saturday mornings April 28, May 5, and May 12, with a full practice SAT given on May 19. The deadline for registrations is SUNDAY, APRIL 22. Please visit http://www.netutors.com/events/registration/ or call 844-NETUTOR to register.

NH Teen Institute Summer Leadership Program
Event Not Sponsored by SRSD

Our Summer Leadership Program is a dynamic residential week of leadership development, self-discovery, and social connection. SLP brings diverse high school students from across NH and New England together through experiential workshops designed as catalysts for personal values exploration and increased school and civic engagement.

Whether an identified leader already or still figuring out their path, this is a great opportunity for the youth in your community!

We partner with schools, organization, and community coalitions to recruit participants and on identifying financial sponsors so the teens in your area to attend. We have scholarship opportunities available and will do our best to match those in need.

Do You Have Unwanted Clothing?
Please Use Our Planet Aid Donation Boxes, Located in the Staff Parking Lot

When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.

Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
