Historical Tidbit:
Early School Transportation
a School Barge or a Pung
The barge was a large wagon pulled by a team of horses or one large horse. The wagon would usually have a roof and sides with steps mounted on the back. The boys and girls would climb the steps and walk along a narrow aisle to find a seat along the sides. Perhaps the best time to ride the barge was during the fall when it was cool and the trees were bright with colors. They would often ask to stop to run out and pick some colored leaves to bring to the teacher.
The pung pronounced "pun" was a sled type wagon used in the winter, usually pulled by one horse.  Usually the floor was spread with sweet smelling hay and a few robes (heavy blankets) were available for the children to use. When it was really cold, some of the children would bring heated bricks or soapstone wrapped in newspaper to be placed at their feet once they got on the pung. When everyone was on and settled, they would all sit together with the blanket pulled up around their chins and the warm bricks or soapstone at their feet.  If it were too cold, some children would get off and run along side to warm up.
The barge was finally replaced by the combustion engine making transportation faster and more comfortable.

9/11 Memorial Construction
As you can see, the new 911 park has started next to the police and fire departments. While some of the project has been funded by the Town, we have always anticipated fundraising as part of completing this memorial.

We have obtained a large donation of $1,000 from Prophett-Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home. Both the West Bridgewater Police and Fire Associations have donated the flag poles for each respective flag. The owners of Dunkin' Donuts, on North Main Street, have also donated the flagpole for the American Flag. We are still in need of funds to complete this memorial.

If you are interested in donating towards the completion of this project, please drop off a check at the West Bridgewater Police Department made out to: West Bridgewater Beautification Fund
(memo line: 9/11 memorial) OR donations can be made directly to us via VENMO @WBPolice
Thank you for your continued support!!!!!

The Bridge Coffee House
A new nonprofit coffee house has opened up in West Bridgewater. Their goal is to bring people together through a cup of coffee. They have a variety of nonprofits that they are partnered with both locally and abroad. Each month they highlight a new organization. Last month was Keeping Pace With Multiple Miracles and this month is Teen Challenge, Brockton. Next month will be Mana World Wide. Each month they share about the amazing work they are doing both locally and/or around the globe! Their heart is to connect people to people and cultures to cultures through use of their space as well as financially supporting nonprofits around the world with all proceeds. Stop in for a cup!
From their Facebook Page: "This is David Homsy, our amazing leader here at The Bridge Coffee House! He loves spending time with his wife, Erin, and his two sons, Caleb and Luke. Hometown Inspiration
This past year I:
*was given 1st row tickets to that day's NPR’s quiz show "Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me!" by comedienne Helen Hong streetside in Chicago.
*sang “Wade in the Water” with Joe Jencks and a host of folk musicians as torrential downpours confined us to the merchandise tent at Fox Valley Folk Festival.
*swam with my granddaughters and dolphins in Pensacola and alligators in T allahassee.
*painted a fence and insulated an entry-way for a retired teacher on the Jersey Shore while working with 400 teenagers on a mission trip.
*danced the polka with my brother in Hershey Park
and hung with a snake charmer in Times Square.

And you know what?
None of these adventures inspired me as much as the stories we Buzz Around every day.
Stories of volunteers giving time and resources to help each other…
the EB Community Gardeners educating about healthy food growth and donating their abundance to food pantries.
WB’s Grace Church fundraising for local charities & creating community at their environmentally & socially responsible coffee shop.
Halifax’s Beautification Committee organizing clean-ups and educational events
Whitman Toy Drive providing for those that don’t have, no questions asked!
Raynham Pride Day, free family fun, to celebrate… just because!
And Bridgewater Citizens of Responsibility & Respect hosting events to help us understand each other better.
And that’s just a smattering. Our communities are active places of good. Buzzaround.Info shares those stories with you and empowers you to participate.
I am inspired and amazed daily. Thank you all for doing what you do and giving me such great stories to share! ~ Jacquie
