Dear Parents,
As we are wrapping up our seventh year, I was reflecting on how many things have changed during my tenure. We've grown and accomplished so much as a school and as a community, but one stand out moment for me was four years ago when our very first class of eighth graders graduated. Those students are now graduating from high school. I reached out to those families last week to offer congratulations on their graduation, and asked them to let me know what they're doing after high school so I could share their successes with our community. I was excited to hear back from several students from the BFA class of 2013-14. Below are their responses:
Rebekah Coleman:
My family and I are still living in Beijing, China. I plan to take a gap year and stay here in China for another year, God willing. During the gap year I'll be doing some online college courses. In the fall of 2019 I'll enter college to study psychology.
Chrystal Delius
I will graduate from Highlands Ranch High School and will be attending the Colorado School of Mines in the fall with the President's Undergrad scholarship.
In high school, I was able to become involved with some amazing clubs, such as Sustainability Club, Science Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, NHS, SHH, and FCCLA. These organizations allowed me to meet new people and become a better leader. Sustainability club and FCCLA especially allowed me to see that I also loved helping others and conserving the planet. This is why I decided that I wanted to become an engineer-- to help innovate solutions to world problems and to help others. I really hope to travel abroad when I am in college. As of now, I have not decided what specific type of engineering I wish to do, but am leaning towards environmental.
Inge Delius
I am graduating from Highlands Ranch High School this year. In high school, I was able to meet many great people and joined many clubs such as Mu Alpha Theta, FCCLA, National Honor Society, Sustainability Club, and Spanish Honor Society. I was the vice president of community service for FCCLA my junior year and the Secretary this year (senior year). I attended the annual FCCLA state competition two years and got gold in interior design and silver as an Environmental Ambassador. Participating in all these different clubs and taking a variety of classes and electives allowed me to see that I enjoy being creative and finding solutions which is why I plan on majoring in engineering. I will be attending Colorado School of Mines this fall and received the Mines president's undergrad scholarship.
Marissa Kersey
Marissa Kersey is graduating from Highlands Ranch High School and will be going to a community or vocational college (which one is still up in the air) as she loves animals still and is thinking of a career in that area.
Jamison Pauley
Jamison is graduating from ThunderRidge High School. He will be going to Metropolitan University of Denver in the fall. He will be studying biology.
Chase Sieradski
Chase scored a 34 on the ACT and earned the Presidential Scholarship at The University of Alabama, which will give him a full tuition ride for his academic and testing performance. He is very excited to be starting their combined five-year Computer Science and MBA program this Fall. Roll Tide! After he graduates, Chase would like to work for a high tech, innovative company where he will develop new technologies and products. He is still an avid outdoor enthusiast and strong competitor who loves pushing his limits in Spartan Races and Ironman-style competitions. Still loves a good laugh and very excited about what the future holds!
Natalie Smith
Natalie will be attending the University of Southern California, pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering.
Abi Wolf
I loved BFA so much and had such amazing experiences/memories made from 2011-2014. I loved my teachers, the curriculum, the environment, etc... and I impress my teachers with the things I learned in middle school (especially my history teachers with my knowledge of history and Benjamin Franklin in particular). Thank you so much!
Here's a bit of what I'm up to:
I am a wrestler (I lettered in wrestling this year) at Hillcrest High School (Midvale, UT) and I throw shot-put and discus for the Track team. I am also an Impromptu Speaker on the Debate team. I have been in the school's big musicals the past 3 years I've attended HHS (our production of Les Miserables won best musical in the state this year) and the play, Dunsinane.
My future:
I will be graduating with Honors on June 5th. I haven't decided on exactly which college I want to attend, but I have a choice between a wrestling scholarship at Midland University (Fremont, NE), Johnson & Wales (Providence, RI campus), and the University of Utah. I plan on going into the ROTC program my Sophomore year because I want to work as a criminal prosecutor, specifically as a JAG Officer. I also am working toward becoming a film actress. Being part of the first "graduating" class at BFA was amazing.
I hope you enjoy celebrating these successes as much as I do! Even after our kids leave, they're always a part of our BFA family.
I would like to start a regular feature in the newsletter to highlight what our alumni are achieving both in high school and beyond. If you know of a BFA graduate that is doing outstanding things, please let me know so they can be featured in a future newsletter.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FROM THE HEALTH ROOM
As this school year comes to a close, we have a few important health room reminders for parents. According to state law,
students entering sixth grade next school year must have received the Tdap vaccination to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Students entering sixth grade, and
students new to BFA for grades 6-8 must show proof of immunization. Records can be dropped off in the school health office,
emailed to the health office, or faxed to 303-974-1738.
Please plan to
pick up your student's medication(s) by the end of this school year--on or before Friday, May 25. All medications that are not picked up by parents at the end of the school year will be disposed of (expired or not). If you cannot personally pick up your student's medication, please send a signed note to school stating who will be picking up the medication.
If your student will be attending the summer BASE program at school, you must transfer medications to this program by
contacting the summer camp coordinators.
Per DCSD,
new medication forms are required at the beginning of each school year, as forms from the prior school year will be EXPIRED. You can find the new forms on our
website, and they will be available through Express Check-In. If appropriate, please plan on taking the forms to your health care provider so he/she can complete them this summer and you can turn in the forms next school year.
Forms must be dated July 1, 2018, or later to be valid for next school year.
At registration, we'll begin accepting signed forms for the 2018-19 school year along with any medication (stored in a properly labeled container) your student needs at school. Also, please remember, the
Provider Medication Authorization Form needs to be completed and signed before we can dispense over the counter medicine (OTC), and any OTC medicine provided to the school must be in the original container.

tax-deductible donation of $25 to the BFA PTO will cover the lawn of a BFA family with a dozen (12) Ben Franklin Lightning Bolts! Be sure to enter the address of the family you want to bolt. You can remain anonymous or let 'em know who bolted them. The DI teams will place the BFA "bolts" in the family's yard for which you paid and remove them the next day.
FOURTH GRADE remains in the lead with the greatest percentage of bolts ordered. If they can hold on to their lead, it looks like they will be winning

Next week, BFA's three DI teams will travel to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to compete among 1,500 teams (approximately 8,000 participants) from 20 different countries. The cost to attend Global Finals is about $1,500 per student. DI is a creative problem-solving program that integrates STEAM principles and teaches 21st century skills, including leadership, teamwork, positive thinking and project management.

BEN'S MIDDLE SCHOOL BBQ BONANZA
Hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers - get 'em while you can! You can do so at the last middle school social of the year from 6-9 p.m. TOMORROW, May 18, at BFA, hosted by Student Council and the Middle School Social Committee - and which will benefit all three Destination Imagination (DI) Global Finals-bound teams. (The BBQ is for middle school students only.)
While there is no cost to attend the BBQ, you can purchase dinner for your middle school student for $5 (hamburger, veggie burger or hot dog) at the BFA Store in advance. Dinner "tickets" are available for purchase until 11:59 p.m. TONIGHT, Thursday, May 17, and will NOT be available at the door. You will not receive an actual ticket - a list of names will be available at the door (no need to bring a receipt). Student Council/Middle School Social also will be providing chips, drinks and dessert, and there will be a number of activities - including basketball, volleyball and backyard games.
ALL proceeds from the BBQ will benefit the 14 BFA students competing at DI Global Finals next week in Knoxville, Tenn. If you would like to make a donation at the BBQ to benefit the DI teams, there will be a collection box to do so.

STEM COMMITTEE POSITIONS AVAILABLE
The STEM Committee is excited to share that there is an
opening on their committee for the Co-Chair position. This person will work closely with fellow Co-Chair Vince Molieri (who is great to work with!). The role involves overall coordination and communication for STEM Committee events and activities as well as helping to run the monthly meetings. If you're interested in this position, please
contact STEM and they'll give your more details.
They also are in need of a
STEAM Expo Coordinator. Planning for the event is well underway, and they already have a fantastic group of volunteers. They are looking for someone to be the main point of contact and keep it moving forward.

2018-19 KINDERGARTEN BOOT CAMP
Incoming Kindergartners--join Mrs. Brook for a Kindergarten Boot Camp this summer! This fun camp provides an introduction to kindergarten literacy and math.
The Kindie Boot Camp is designed to provide an opportunity for new kindergarten students to become familiar with BFA and the kindergarten classroom. Campers will learn a new letter and number every day, gain new skills, make friends, and work on crafts.
There will be two boot camp sessions, and space is limited to 16 kids per session. The first camp will be held
June 4 - 8 and the second is June 25 - 29;
both are from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YEAR-END PARTIES
At the end of last school year, the PTO recommended only having three parties this school year and eliminating the end-of-year party in an attempt to make the last day simpler. This recommendation was approved by the administration last year. So, instead of a planned party with crafts, games and snacks, students will have popsicles (or the like) and enjoy time with friends signing yearbooks, watching a movie, socializing, or another activity at the teacher's discretion.

BFA'S FINANCE COMMITTEE LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS
The Finance Committee is
looking for volunteers with a background in finance or accounting. Volunteers will review school financials and budgets, recommend and manage the school's auditor, and make other financial policy recommendations to the board. Attending monthly meetings and working on special projects, members can expect to volunteer 1-3 hours a month. With two long-time members wishing to open the door for newer family involvement, this is a
great opportunity to fill a meaningful role on this important BFA committee.

PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The Douglas County Libraries will be doing their summer reading program again this year! The program runs June 2-31 and registration is open now. As an added bonus,
Douglas County Libraries Foundation will give $250 each to the elementary, middle and high school that signs up the most readers for the library's Summer Reading Program.

Ben Franklin Academy is offering an exciting Summer Camp program again this year.
The 2018 summer camp calendars are finished and ready for parents to view (see below for details).
Do you need full-time daycare for the summer? Or perhaps you want to schedule something fun for your kids once a week while you run errands. Maybe your kids would like to connect with other Ben Franklin Academy kids and enjoy fun, summer social time? Whatever your situation, our Summer Camp is sure to keep your kids safe and entertained. And, the best part is--the program is staffed by people you know and trust!

REMINDERS AND KEY DATES FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR
Below are a few important reminders and key dates as we approach the end of this school year and prepare for next year.
Carpool
Please keep your carpool tags, and bring them with you to registration. At that time, we'll give you the new 2018-19 validation sticker. You may order additional carpool tags through our payments system,
RevTrak. If you place your order before Aug. 1, the additional tags will be available during registration.
Uniforms
The current uniform policy can always be found on our website under the 'Parents' tab. The last significant uniform policy changes were made last year, and include a phase-out of the blue and khaki jumper, the plaid belt, the oxford button down, and the quarter zip pullover. Those items will not be permissible under the Uniform Policy next school year.
Keep in mind that Educational Outfitters, our only uniform vendor, is having a 20 percent off sale May 15 - 31, a 15 percent off sale June 1 - 15, and a 10 percent off sale June 16 - July 10. The used uniform sale is from 9 - 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, in the Lightning Gym. Please remember that they only accept cash or a check.
Summer Office Hours
Beginning May 30, the front office will only be open Wednesdays from 9 a.m. until noon, except the week of July 2.
Registration for 2018-19 School Year
On July 25, you'll receive a link for Express Check-In, which is the first step in the Registration Process. To complete Express Check-In, you must have an active Parent Portal and be able to access it. If you have forgotten your username or password, please click on this
Frequently Asked Questions link. If you still have issues,
email our registrar. Please note: Families new to Douglas County School District (DCSD), will need to set up their parent portal according to the instructions DCSD will send on July 1.
Express Check-In will open on Wednesday, July 25. To avoid delays in your student's registration, you must
complete Express Check-In AND pay your student fees by Tuesday, Aug. 7. Following are the annual student fees for the 2018-19 school year:
- Preschool: $125
- Half-Day Kindergarten: $120
- Full-Day Kindergarten through Fifth Grade: $170
- Middle School (Grades 6-8): $185
The
second step in the registration process takes place Wednesday, Aug. 8 - Friday, Aug 10. Parents should plan on coming to BFA to complete the registration process on their assigned date (see below). It is important to complete all necessary paperwork from Express Check-In and bring it, along with your carpool tag, to registration. Keep in mind, student photos will be taken during registration, so students should wear a uniform shirt to registration. Photos for volunteer badges will also be taken during this time.
If you have a new address or moved over summer, please bring proof of residency documents (warranty deed, tax notice, deed of trust, rental or lease agreement) to registration. In addition, if there are updated legal documents for your student, this is a good time to bring those to our Registrar.

Middle School Electives
The complete Middle School Elective Catalogue will be sent to middle school parents by late June. Parents will receive an email in July with instructions on how to select and pay for electives:
- Eighth graders will be invited to choose their electives beginning Friday, July 13;
- Seventh graders can choose electives beginning Monday, July 16; and
- Sixth graders may select their electives beginning Wednesday, July 18.
All elective choices should be made by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25.
Teacher Assignments/Middle School Schedules
Elementary parents will be notified of their student's homeroom teacher via email on August 1. Middle school schedules will be available in the Parent Portal beginning Aug. 1. (We will not hand out printed schedules during registration.)

Kindergarten Welcome and Assessments- Look for a Sign-Up Genius from your teacher by Aug. 3.
Monday, Aug. 13 - Teacher Meet and Greets - First through eighth grade students can stop by their teacher's classroom from 9 a.m. until noon, or from 1 - 3 p.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 15 - First day of school! Students should wear their Formal Uniform, which is a navy polo with the BFA logo and tan pants, shorts, skirt or a skort.
Wednesday, Aug. 29 - Back to School Night from 6 - 7:30 p.m. for kindergarten through fourth grade parents.
Thursday, Aug 30 - Back to School Night from 6 - 8 p.m. for fifth through eighth grade parents.

Student Council and the Middle School Social Committee are throwing our last
middle school social of the year from 6-9 p.m. on
Friday, May 18, at BFA. This is a FREE event for middle school students, but students who want to
eat a hot dog, hamburger or veggie burger need to buy a ticket for $5 t
hrough the
BFA Store TODAY.

Books, posters and miscellaneous items are all buy one, get one free. Make plans to stop by during the hours and dates below, but please keep in mind that we'll be closed for carpool from 3 - 4 p.m. each day.

Our preschool kiddos are celebrating next week! The three-year-old class is having end-of-year parties at 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23 (for the M/W/F class) and Thursday, May 24 (for the T/TH class).
Our four-year-old preschool students will celebrate their graduation next week. They have a sweet ceremony planned for their parents so we hope you can attend!
- The M/W/F morning class is graduating at 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23.
- The M/W/F afternoon class is graduating at 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23.
- The T/TH morning class is graduating at 11:20 a.m. on Thursday, May 24.
- The T/TH afternoon class is graduating at 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 24.

Half-day kindergartners will perform from 10 - 10:45 a.m. and full day kindergartners will perform from 2 - 2:45 p.m.
on Wednesday, May 23,
in the Thunder Gym.

he middle school field day will be held on
Wednesday, May 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Redstone Park.
The students will leave Ben Franklin around 8:30 a.m. and walk to the park with their advisory teacher; they will walk home after field day ends at 1 p.m. Please be sure to send you student to school with a water bottle and sunscreen already applied.

If you student (grades 1-5) has met his/her Accelerated Reader goal for this trimester, he/she can wear Dress of Choice on Thursday, May 24.

Eighth Grade Graduation will be held on at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, in the Thunder Gym.

The School Accountability Committee is meeting from 4:10 - 5:10 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, in the BFA Conference Room.

Ben's Brigade is meeting from 8-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, at the Starbucks inside Super Target (

The last Dress of Choice day of the school year is Friday, May 25. Students can wear dress of choice if they have not had two uniform violations since the last dress of choice day.

Friday, May 25, is the last day of school. We hope you all enjoy your summer break and we wish our graduating eighth graders the very best in high school!
