NLLD Makes BIG Presentation at Luncheon
Dwayne Bourgeois joins Terrebonne and South Lafourche
levee district directors for update on local levee projects.
NLLD Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois, along with Reggie Dupre of the Terrebonne Levee and Conservation District (TLCD) and Windell Curole from the South Lafourche Levee District (SLLD), updated members of the Bayou Industrial Group today on Morganza to the Gulf levee and floodgate construction and other local levee and drainage projects in north and south Lafourche.

As our Bayou Region prepares for the 2018 hurricane season, "We are moving a lot of dirt to build levees and drainage systems as quickly as we can to reduce the risk of flooding to our homes and businesses in North Lafourche," said Bourgeois.

While most of the 98-mile Morganza system is located in Terrebonne Parish, the system's easternmost features are in Lafourche. The NLLD, TLCD and SLLD are working on levee reaches K and L from Pointe-aux-Chenes to Cut Off, construction of mitigation terraces, a closure structure in Grand Bayou, as well as planning and design for the intersection of the system levees from Larose to Lockport and beyond, with an eventual closure in the GIWW to tie the system into the SLLD north seawall.
NLLD Officials Attend ALBL Workshop
NLLD President Cory Kief, other members of the NLLD Board of Commissioners and Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois attended the Association of Levee Boards of Louisiana (ALBL) workshop earlier this month in Baton Rouge.

Speakers included Colonel Michael Clancy of the New Orleans District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, LA Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority Chairman Johnny Bradberry, LA Department of Transportation and Development Secretary Shawn Wilson, and State Representative Jerome Zeringue with the Louisiana Flood Risk Coalition.

Kief serves as president of ALBL and Bourgeois is on the Executive Committee. The ALBL is composed of members of levee districts around the state and its mission is to control and prevent flooding. "Without Flood Control, Nothing Else Matters."

In Phase 2, this material will be reshaped to ensure a consistent elevation along the length of the levee.

To accomplish the objectives of Phase 1, the contractor has begun to excavate a new canal and is backfilling the old canal adjacent to the existing levee on the western end of this project in the area just east of the Valentine return levee and structure.

About the NLLD
The North Lafourche Conservation, Levee, and Drainage District (known as NLLD) was formed in 1992 to provide drainage and flood protection services for the northern portion of Lafourche Parish, including the entire parish north of the Intracoastal Canal.   The District includes over 250 miles of levees and drainage canals, and over 40 pump stations.
