National Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide celebration that gives educators and others the opportunity to showcase their apprenticeship programs while providing valuable information to career seekers. The CSI Workforce Development and Training Apprenticeship Team (Davy Gadd and Stefanie Hauff) took advantage of this opportunity to share information about CSI Apprenticeship programs as they met with Idaho Power employees in Payette, Boise, and Nampa. The CSI team will also make two more stops before the holidays in Twin Falls and Pocatello. It is anticipated that the team will meet with at least 150 Idaho Power employees who could potentially be interested in the CSI apprenticeship programs.

Members of the Episcopal Church of Idaho recently held their annual Episcopal Diocesan Convention for 2019 in Burley, Idaho. Every year during this event, members of the Episcopal church bring donation items with them to donate to a local cause or charity. This year the Idaho Episcopal Dioceses chose the College of Southern Idaho Gilbert's Pantry. Attendees of the convention and members of the local Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Twin Falls drove the a large conference table worth of donations (plus additional cash donations) from Burley to the CSI campus. Gilbert's Pantry is an emergency relief food supply for all CSI students. It is a free and confidential option for students who need assistance with food. The pantry takes donations of non-perishable items as well as hygiene items. Donations can be dropped off at the Office of Student Affairs in the Taylor (Student Union) building, on the second floor. The Twin Falls School District has reported that 330 children have been identified as homeless in our community. To reduce a barrier for these children the school district has been able to assist with clothing and there is a current need for NEW warm pajamas. You will notice cardboard boxes around campus that have the flyer above attached. The College of Southern Idaho American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) chapter will be collecting pajamas in these boxes from anyone willing to donate. The school district is looking for pajamas that will work for boys and girls ages 3-18. The boxes will be in several locations around campus from
now until Tuesday, December 3. You are also welcome to interoffice mail your donations to the CSI Mail Room.

Interclub Council is the managerial and governing body for student clubs and organizations at CSI. Interclub consists of representatives from all student clubs and organizations on campus. Interclub exists to recognize clubs and organizations, distribute funding to clubs, work as a liaison between a club or organization and Senate, provide a forum to discuss issues, share accomplishments, advertise and solicit assistance with events, and improve communication among clubs and organizations.

S.O.A.R. is required for all students seeking a certificate or degree at the College of Southern Idaho. S.O.A.R. is designed to introduce students to the essential tools for success at the CSI. Each S.O.A.R. session begins at 8 a.m. and runs until approximately 3:30 p.m. Please let students know that future S.O.A.R. dates are scheduled for December 6 and January 4. They need to choose to attend on a date that allows them to attend the entire day. If students need to attend on a different day than they signed up for, please have them drop the session at least 24 hours prior to S.O.A.R. If they do not drop the course 24 hours before they will be charged for that day. If they have any dietary or accessibility needs have them contact the Office of Admissions to set up accommodations.

Join Julie Ellis PT, SCS, CSCS from the Center for Physical Rehab for an informal and informative session on all things ergonomic and the workplace. This is especially intended for frontline staff and those that spend much of their day in fixed positions, such as driving, sitting or standing.
Newer employees are especially invited for this preventive maintenance update! We will end with an invigorating stretching session that will send you back to the workplace feeling fine. - Back by popular demand, we will offer more Coping with Caregiving sessions with Shawna Wasko from the OOA starting in February. Participants are saying this information/support group has changed their lives for the better. Join us on Tuesdays at noon on 2/11, 3/10 and 4/13 in HR Conference Rm 210. - Our Wellbeing Program will take a more serious look at simplifying and minimizing our lives during Spring Semester. We're calling it a Carbon Weight Loss Program because everyone wants to get in shape after winter, right? Starting in February and ending with Earth Day in April, we will challenge you to find 101 Things to Reduce in Your Home. Trust me, you will really only touch the surface during that time, but the results will be mind-blowing and it will start you on a course for the better in the future. Participants will earn recyclable/washable grocery and produce shopping bags in fun colors and shapes! Never use plastic bags again! Join the challenge to lose the weight!
- Speaking of weight, our March focus for National Nutrition Month will beg the question "Are you eating enough to lose weight?" Our course is inspired by Full Plate Living in partnership with WELCOA. This four-week program with CSI dietitian/allied health instructor Sarah Renaldi will focus on FIBER as a key to weight loss and sustained health. Most Americans eat fewer than 5 fiber foods each day when we should be eating 11-15! Come learn how! Days/times, location and registration to be announced. With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season in full force, drinking water is one of the easiest ways to care for your body. Drinking more water can energize you and help your body and brain function optimally. So, water you waiting for? Dive right into a healthier and happier you!
HOW TO PARTICIPATE

- Try to consume eight, or more, eight-ounce cups of water each day for two weeks.
- Each eight-ounce cup of water you drink is worth one point. Only water counts! To complete the challenge you need to accumulate 96 points, or 12 fulls days.

The College of Southern Idaho Symphonic Band will present its fall concert, Holidays and Getaways, on Tuesday, December 3 at 7:30 PM in the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium. CSI faculty member George K. Halsell will direct.
The concert will feature a variety of both Christmas and other music. Featured works include Dialogues on 'In Dulci Jubilo', by Minnesota-based composer John Zdechlik, Dramatic Overture, by Nicolas Myaskovsky, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Procession of the Nobles, and March With Trumpets, by American composer William Bergsma. Also on the program are works by Tim Mahr, Arthur Pryor, Vaclav Nelhybel, Randall Standridge, John Philip Sousa, and Hershy Kay.
The performance will also feature a memorial tribute to two members of the Symphonic Band who have passed on since its previous concert, bassoonist Hubert Johnson and flutist Sylvia Grooms. In their memory, members of the Snake River Horn Society will perform the second movement from Three Movements for Horn Quartet, by Dr. Halsell. The French hornists performing include Halsell, Catherine Doyle, Paul Johnson, and David Hamilton.

MAGIC VALLEY CHORALE PRESENTS HANDEL'S MESSIAH

The Magic Valley Chorale invites you to its performance of Part 1 of Handel's Messiah on Saturday under the direction of Carson Wong. The Chorale will be accompanied by the Magic Valley Chamber Orchestra. The program will also include familiar Christmas carols.  Eugene Ballet Company's Nutcracker stands out from all the other holiday shows as the one to see. Since the early 1900s, the Nutcracker has been the most performed and most popular ballet of all time. Danced to Tchaikovsky's memorable score, The Nutcracker is a favorite holiday tradition.
Now in its 36th year, The Eugene Ballet Company is, in the words of the National Endowment for the Arts, "one of the premier touring ballet companies in the United States". Over its 30 year existence, the company has performed the Nutcracker in 32 states and 7 countries. The Nutcracker performances on December 6 and 7 at the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium are a wonderful opportunity for the local community to see this outstanding professional ballet company.
Eugene Ballet Company's Nutcracker features a cast full of nationally and internationally acclaimed dancers. Artistic Director Toni Pimble overflows with enthusiasm when speaking of the talents of this season's performers.
"The Eugene Ballet Company brings dancers from all over the world to the CSI Fine Arts Center stage. Korean principal Yun-Kyung Kim bring technical aplomb and flair while Russian, Petr Orlov explodes onto the stage. Venezuelan Gilmer Duran brings character and magnatism, Leoannis Pupo Guillen acts the role of the Nutcracker with style. Juan Carlos Amy-Cordero's technical prowess is astonishing while long time principal dancer Jennifer Martin combines maturity with grace and technical acuity."

As has become the custom, local dance students will have the thrill of a lifetime as they perform onstage with the Eugene Ballet Company. Roles to be danced by the children include mice, angels, party children, flowers, and ladybugs. Students were selected by audition and have been actively rehearsing under the guidance off Rayni Capps. "Involvement of local dance students is something that we have always encouraged," according to Toni Pimble, the company's artistic director. "Their experiences with a professional ballet company will be something they will remember for years to come, giving them inspiration beyond their dance studies."
Performances will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on December 6 and 2 p.m. on December 7 at the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium. There are still excellent seating options available for each performance.

o help introduce interested students to Weekend College Plus. The Open House will be held from 6 - 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 9, 2019, in the Learning and Tutoring Commons in the Meyerhoeffer building.
Program representatives will be available to provide information and answer questions about the program.
CSI recognizes that balancing work, family, and other responsibilities can be a barrier for students who wish to continue their education.
Weekend College Plus is designed to allow students to earn an associate degree or certificate while taking classes during the evenings, online, and on weekends. Flexible face-to-face, online, and hybrid classes are geared to support working adults and students who may also have family responsibilities.

Degrees offered through the Weekend College Plus program include an Associate of Arts or Applied Science in Liberal Arts, General Business, Education, Accounting/Bookkeeping, and Welding. Students may be able to earn credit for prior learning that will go towards their degree with enough experience in the appropriate areas. Financial aid and scholarship opportunities are also available for those who qualify.
"This program offers an exciting opportunity for students of all backgrounds and skill levels to access a college education at a time that's convenient for them," said Kendal Nield, CSI Weekend College Plus Director.
Classes for this program will begin Monday, January 13, 2020, and now is the time to start preparing. The Weekend College Plus team is excited to help individuals who may have started college and never finished, students who are looking to increase their skills and education, or those who just simply need a flexible schedule to work around other responsibilities.

Whether you are a new manager or have been in a management role for years, the CSI Emerging Leader Program provides you with the expertise, tools and confidence needed to become a more impactful leader. Through a combination of lecture-based presentations, interactive activities and one-on-one coaching, you will develop your personal leadership style, learn methods to foster a high-performance culture and acquire tools that you can implement immediately in your workplace.
Your Leadership Legacy by Robert Galford and Regina Maruca will provide direction for the program, challenging you to think about and formulate your leadership legacy. In one-on-one sessions instructor, Michelle Shinn, will help you assess your current impact, elevate your work and achieve your leadership goals.
The Emerging Leader Program consists of six 4-hour sessions. All sessions will be held on Fridays from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m at CSI's Main Campus. Enrollment is capped at 12 participants.

Meeting Regional Workforce Needs through Higher Education

Pullman, Washington based Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) creates products used to protect power grids throughout the country and the world. Serving customers worldwide can be challenging and skilled employees make it possible. "Employers like SEL are looking for skilled tradespeople and that workforce need is growing," said Marisa Hemingway, an SEL Human Resources Director.
A few miles south at Lewis-Clark State College (LCSC) in Lewiston, a plan is in place to meet the demand for skilled workers at SEL and for other employers throughout the region. "We have placed career technical and academic studies side-by-side, interfacing the curriculum and we believe we are responding to industry in ways that are meaningful," LCSC President Dr. Cynthia Pemberton said.
LCSC's new president calls it the "knitting together of hard and soft skills" and says it results from input received from technical advisory committees convened by the college specifically to hear what regional employers need. "They are interested in students who have technical skills directly related to jobs they need to have done. They also need individuals with soft-skills who can reason and work as part of a team and have more complex abilities to solve problems," Pemberton said.
In some cases, students earning an associate degree may decide to continue working toward a more advanced degree. "We try to prepare them for the first job and then for what would come next as well," LCSC Provost Dr. Lori Stinson said. "Take for example our Associate of Science in Engineering. It is specifically designed for two years here at LCSC and we have an agreement in place with the University of Idaho for students to transfer there for any range of engineering degrees."
Faculty are also partnering with industry in and around the Lewiston-Clarkston valley - establishing internships and apprenticeships to, as Dr. Stinson put it "polish-off the student" to gain specific career skills.
SEL's Marisa Hemingway says it is a great way to help LCSC graduates develop a variety of career competencies. "Who better to teach career skills than the companies offering the careers," she said. "This partnership enables academic institutions to focus on teaching fundamentals - math, physics, etc."
Similar partnerships with industry are occurring at colleges and universities throughout our state and have the full backing of the State Board of Education and Governor Brad Little's Workforce Development Council.
"Connecting education to careers is critical to the economic competitiveness of the state. Employers have to shine a spotlight on the skills that our future workforce needs. If we don't provide that leadership, we can't expect education to meet our needs," Chairman Trent Clark of the Workforce Development Council said.
Dr. Pemberton says the recent pledge of cooperation between all eight college and university presidents is strengthening partnerships and filling voids that might otherwise be problematic. "If an individual school doesn't have all the pieces for a particular program, we find a way to work together to make those pieces come together." she said. "These are examples of how higher education in Idaho is working together to deliver real, tangible education pathways that blend experience to meet industry needs."

The CSI Social Sciences & Humanities Symposium will explore the history and implications of the 19th Amendment and the Women's Suffrage Movement on March 12 and 13, 2020. Day one will examine the full context of the amendment. Day two will consider the implications and impact in contemporary America.
For teachers and students alike the cost of $65 will cover registration and food. To register visit MyCSI and choose either HUMA 199 or SOCY 199A C01, for continuing professional development or for the student who needs an additional transcript credit. A community registraiton portal will be open soon. Scholarships are available to cover the cost of the credit.
