Music Notes:
Our music for Pentecost features three settings of the 9th-century Gregorian hymn Veni Creator Spiritus (Come, Creator Spirit), one in its original form for the Introit against a backdrop of improvised sounds and spoken responses, and two settings for organ. The invocation of the Spirit is continued in André Thomas' stirring setting of the spiritual My Good Lord's Done Been Here.
Children will remain in worship
. They are welcome in the children's area at the front of the sanctuary and we have activity bags available in the narthex.
Adult Forum: This Sunday,
member Julie Mailey leads us in a conversation on Faith and Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art. If you would like to walk to the museum, meet in the Reception Room at 11:30 am; otherwise, meet in the lobby of the museum at 11:45 am. The conversation will conclude by 12:30 pm.

Sandy Ammon was born the daughter of a Presbyterian minister and has been a Presbyterian all of her life. She became disillusioned with "the church" when her church closed two and a half years ago and wasn't looking for a new one, but somehow this one found her. Sandy came to visit Covenant with a friend, whose church had also closed, and slowly the fragmented pieces of her spiritual journey started to fall into place, like the pieces of a puzzle. Every time that she came back, it became more and more evident that this should be her church home. She is a second career Chemistry teacher at John Hay High School, right down the street (her first career was in clinical chemistry at St Vincent Charity Hospital). She is also a Reiki practitioner and enjoys practicing yoga. She and her husband Rick have two grown daughters, a Schnoodle, and a tank full of cichlids. In the summer, she likes to travel, and is a big Indians fan! She is looking forward to meeting more people and getting involved in the mission of this beautiful church.

Bat Wings and Bell Tower!
Specialized Help Needed for Covenant's 2018 Parade the Circle Entries!
In the spirit of "go big or go home," we've tackled a lot on the occasion of the McGaffin Carillon's 50
th
anniversary weekend,
including
committing to building a tower-shaped float surrounded by 47 wing-flapping bats! So if you're good with a hammer or saw...or would like to improve your skills...consider joining the crew who will be tackling this monumental tower float task! We will be meeting with artistic/designer staff from the Cleveland Museum of Art the weekend of May 26
th
and 27
th
for advice on how to cost-effectively replicate our church tower wrapped in bells. Our very own "Tool Guy" Ed Laylin has agreed to help transform this idea into reality. If this seems like something you might enjoy helping with, contact Barb Clint either via phone/text (216-385-5114) or via email

Construction not your thing? Then we have a completely different opportunity for you: helping to make bat wings for all of our Parade participants. We are aiming to have at least 25 kids and 25 adults marching in Parade the Circle on Saturday, June 9th. Parade marchers will wear black clothing (leggings, slacks, t-shirts) and custom-made wings. Rumor has it that we have a bat wing pattern from a prior year's entry, which we are tracking down. We will provide the fabric if you can provide your time and skills. McGaffin Carillon 50th Anniversary Celebration: June 9-11
Gospels Sculpted in Bronze
Did you know that up in the McGaffin Tower are hundreds of relief sculptures of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? Check Ezekiel 1:10 and Revelation 4:7 for the Bible verses that gave rise in early Christian theology to identifying the four writers with the symbols of man (or sometimes a book, since Matthew's is the first gospel in the New Testament), lion, ox, and eagle.
Carillon bells are really sculptures
cast of molten bronze
using a lost-wax technique, just like
Rodin's bronzes at the Art Museum. Bell foundries offer choices for decoration. Fifty years ago,
Covenant's carillon committee, chaired by the late George L. Hackett, selected a frieze of figures of the four evangelists and their medieval symbols, surrounding the shoulders of all 47 bells.
On the weekend of June 8-10, we will celebrate the ways in which this marvelous instrument has literally proclaimed the gospel for 50 years. Don't miss the concerts on Friday and Sunday and Covenant's "Bats in the Belfry" Parade the Circle float and Circle Village presence.
And, about 140 feet closer to terra firma than the bells, you can see the symbols in the ceramic tiles of the Williamson Chancel landing, too.
