Our Saviour's celebrates its 150th anniversary
|
As a synod, we are whole when we celebrate together. So as we approach the end of the year, we celebrate with churches that had milestone anniversaries in 2019!
Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Minneapolis has always been conscious of its community. A church founded by Norwegian immigrants on the outskirts of the state's largest city, Our Saviour’s has made deliberate decisions to be welcoming as the city has grown around it. Its members have collaborated with organizations such as Bread for the World, ISAIAH, and The Coming Home Collaborative. Pastor Laurie Eaton says, “Meeting the needs of our neighbors has led us to examine systems of injustice and inequity that cause so many to be in need.”
Over the past year, Our Saviour’s has celebrated a different aspect of its history every month. The church has created visual displays that show how it has changed over the years -- from the church’s architecture and worship style, to its engagement of immigrant communities. However, Our Saviour’s celebration is not just about celebrating the past; Pastor Laurie notes, “Throughout this anniversary year we have emphasized that we celebrate our past for the purpose of building on that legacy for the sake of future ministry and mission.” The church is currently making final preparations for its formal anniversary celebration on December 8, consisting of a Sunday morning worship service followed by an open house and special program.
Stay tuned in upcoming weeks for celebration with the following churches: Bethlehem and Central Lutheran. Last week we recognized Tapestry for its fifth anniversary; the week before, Westwood Lutheran for its 75th anniversary.

Lutheran World Federation offers daily Advent hymn from Lutheran traditions around the world
|
In December 2019, for the second year in a row, Lutheran World Federation member churches are sharing hymns to show how the communion of churches prepares for Christ’s coming into this world. This season can be used to reflect on and celebrate the diversity, uniqueness, and oneness of God’s gifts to us. From the first Sunday of Advent on December 1 until Christmas Eve, a different Lutheran communion will share an Advent hymn popular in its context.

ELCA Good Gifts

Through Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM), young adults learn what it means to serve in a spirit of accompaniment as they walk alongside global church companions.
Participants will become immersed in a new community and form deep relationships. And they will confront issues of wealth and poverty, racial privilege, gender privilege, economic disparity, and globalization, all through the lens of faith.
Applications for the ELCA’s 2020-2021 YAGM program are now open. If you know young adults age 21 to 29, encourage them to apply by the priority deadline of
