All Academy students have participated in the Intent to Return process in their Academy class during the week of 12/9-12/13. This process lets us know if a student would like to continue on to the next-level Academy course for the 2020-2021 school year, or if they would like to be released from the Academy after this school year. To complete the Intent to Return process, students simply checked “Yes” (they do want to continue on in the Academy program), or “No” (they would like to be released from the Academy program next school year to pursue other courses), and then signed their name. Academy instructors provided the Intent to Return paperwork during class. If an Academy student decided they do not want to continue on in the program for the 2020-2021 school year, and checked “No,” Mrs. Combs will send them an Academy drop form, which must be filled out, signed by the student and the parent, and returned to Mrs. Combs by dropping it off at the front desk. Those Academy drop forms will be distributed when we return from winter break. If a student initially checked “Yes,” indicating they would like to return to the program, but then changes his/her mind, the student can email Mrs. Combs for a copy of the Academy drop form.
If you have any questions about the Intent to Return process, you can email Mrs. Combs at
[email protected]

PSAT:
Seniors:
College Board is giving away scholarships for completing the steps for applying to college and financial aid. Click on the links below for more information.
Seniors can earn money from CollegeBoard for the following
:
- Complete the FAFSA: $1,000
- Now Open for Seniors Through February
- Students should complete the FAFSA® form to apply for financial aid. They must provide a screenshot of their FAFSA confirmation email if selected for the scholarship (undocumented and international students are exempt).
In order to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a student AND a parent must first create an FSA ID. Students and parents can do that online here:
https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/fsaid
.
This is something that can be completed in Counselor Corner. Parents who have older students may have already completed this process previously. Once students and parents have their FSA ID, they can complete the FAFSA on-line here:
https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa
.
- Apply to Colleges: $1,000
- Now Open for Seniors Through February
- Students should apply to at least two colleges they want to attend and submit the names of the colleges to earn an entry for the scholarship. Students may earn one additional entry for every additional college application after their first two, up to a maximum of six total applications.
In addition to the College Board Scholarships, seniors that have not applied to Bright Futures should make sure to complete their application before the holiday break. Students who meet the criteria and who have applied for the scholarship prior to the end of the first semester can lock in the scholarship in January.
In order to apply for State Scholarship & Grant Programs (Bright Futures), a student must first
Create a Student Account/Profile
at the following link:
http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/
. Click on State Grants, Scholarships & Applications. Click on
Create a Student Account.
Students will receive an email with their User ID and temporary password. After creating a
Profile
, students will have the option to continue directly to the FFAA.
The application typically takes 10 minutes or less to complete, so students are welcome to come to counselor corner and complete the application with their counselor or do it on their own from home. Students DO NOT need to have met the requirements prior to applying for the scholarship. While we encourage students to meet the requirements for the scholarship as soon as possible, students have until the June SAT/ACT test dates to continue to try and earn the required test scores. As a reminder, students need qualifying GPA, SAT or ACT, and Community Service Hours in order to earn the scholarship. Any student that meets those requirements and applies will earn the scholarship.
Please make sure you are checking the e-mail address that you provided to your Naviance account as we will start sending larger senior specific updates through Naviance. Returning students should have received their Naviance registration code last spring in order to set up their accounts. If you need that information again, you can get it from your counselor. Once you have registered, you can continue to access your account here:
https://student.naviance.com/allennease
The majority of students should have submitted their college applications at this time. As we enter notification season, please update your counselor and Naviance as you get news of your acceptances!
Juniors:
As we enter the holiday season, now is a great time to see if you can incorporate college visits into your travel plans. If you could schedule a housing tour along with a financial aid and admissions presentation with a meal on campus, it would go a long way in helping you get a sense of where you might want to be 2 years from now.
Counselors visited Junior English classes before Thanksgiving. We worked with students to confirm that they are aware of all the classes that they need to graduate. We also worked on developing their college lists of potential schools and careers. Students received their Naviance codes so that they can log into their Naviance accounts here:
https://student.naviance.com/allennease
and start saving potential colleges and careers to their “Colleges I’m Thinking About” and “Careers I’m Thinking About” sections. Students are encouraged to start working on their resumes in Naviance as these will be required for their college letters of recommendation next year. Please ask your student to review the packet that they received. It includes their remaining credits for graduation, SAT/ACT test dates, Bright Futures information, and their checklist for college/career planning.
It is also time for Juniors to start taking the SAT and ACT. Your goal is to have a solid test score by the end of the school year so that you can start submitting college applications in the summer and fall of next year. You can register for the SAT at
www.collegeboard.org
and the ACT at
www.actstudent.org
. Students on free and reduced lunch can see Ms. Harden in guidance for 2 fee waivers for each test.
Sophomores:
PSAT scores will be released on-line on Monday, December 9
th
. Please see the PSAT section of this newsletter to see how to view your scores.
Freshman:
All Freshman World History classes went to the computer lab on Tuesday 10/22 or Thursday 10/24. Students created their Naviance accounts (a huge college and career resource), learned about graduation requirements and tutoring opportunities, took a strengths survey, and more. Please have your student share with you the packet they received that includes their 9
th
grade “stay on track” checklist.
